The great South west PCR mystery

They say they investigating when we going to find out outcome?

inews.co.uk/news/covid-lateral-flow-tests-negative-pcr-1236141

Is it option

  1. faulty batch pcr tests only at South west drive through test centres? 2/ corruption or negligence at the local lab? Does the South west have 1 giant lab that processes bath/ Swindon and Bristol pcr tests
  2. some new varient that evades pcr tests like the one in France.

Are we even doing much genome sequencing these days?

We did have surge testing in Bristol last winter with varient e48k similar South Africa but that was pre delta.

We had massive cases in locally June and July.
Local r rate seems low currently despite so many off school and 2 Universitys return.

3 kids my child's year have postive lft but negative pcr.
We don't have any set date for covid jabs.
The school is not declaring any cases at all publicly..

Weirdly people saying home tests giving postive results.

That lft more likely to bring us false negative than postive..

Just makes me worried so much covid all over the region undetected with postives not isolating.

So many if these postive lft negative pcr seem to be school children.
ONS forecast 1 in 14 teens had covid last week yet all teens at our school with covid symptoms have negative pcr?

Well I read in the news they are now saying LFT's are more accurate than they thought. FFS, do they really think we are that stupid? Utter shite.

Mellowfruitfulnessy · 14/10/2021 17:13

@neveradullmoment99 exactly. Wtaf. There’s been a SUDDEN CHANGE. We’ve all noticed it.

mrshoho · 14/10/2021 17:18

Could there possibly be shortages of the of the chemicals required to perform PCR tests???

worriedatthemoment · 14/10/2021 17:25

@mrshoho they would just delay the results then surely or say positive
One thing i noticed when booking a test was couldn't see option for testing because of positive lft , yet im sure that used to be on there unless I'm imagining it,
Ive registered his positive lvt , usually don't bother with the negatives as they take so long to register but wanted to register this time so at least in system , if he has negative pcr

worriedatthemoment · 14/10/2021 17:26

@Mellowfruitfulnessy thats just one scientific thing no , not the goverment etc
And these things change a lot plus we will also learn more as more tests , research is done

Tigerblue · 14/10/2021 19:03

Apparently 581 cases have been recorded in Gloucestershire, up from 88. I'd normally expect to see around 130-170 cases daily. I can't think of any large events a few days ago, so this doesn't make sense.

Tigerblue · 14/10/2021 19:05

88 yesterday that is

worriedatthemoment · 14/10/2021 19:17

@Tigerblue some big rises in last week near me too in sw, and now knowing lots more positive cases in last 2 weeks than the whole pandemic, most of them are in 15-17 group I know , but then some spread to family in household too others whole household has stayed covid free

borntobequiet · 14/10/2021 19:22

Ah the joys of exponential growth really taking off.

What in one day?! Uh oh
ThemedName · 14/10/2021 19:44

@worriedatthemoment I am sure when I registered my positive lft at the weekend it took me straight through to order my PCR. If that didn’t happen for you it’s interesting….

Indeed! And yet still nothing in the press.
Frazzled2207 · 14/10/2021 20:08

According to Twitter the following message was sent to sw schools today. Something I suppose but talk about stable doors and bolting horses….

ThemedName · 14/10/2021 20:13

That’s something. I got harassed by school today for dd being off. We’re still waiting for the PCR results but they were very clear that if it’s negative she needs to be back at school. I know they’re following guidance but…

I can - the Cheltenham Literature Festival. I know people have travelled from overseas for this and it is all inside in cramped little buildings.

Once again Cheltenham will be infamous for another festival of virus transmission.

@pleasedtonevermeetyou I read it as then saying that you should treat the LFD as a positive if it shows positive (and you have symptoms or a close contact) - even if pcr negative.

That’s not saying you should isolate JUST on being a contact. It’s with the positive lfd.

worriedatthemoment · 14/10/2021 20:37

@ThemedName it did to be fair but i had already gone on the booking system so my fault as I did wrong way round , just wanted to get one booked asap

Another reason for the case number is mentioned on this thread, or the previous one, which said one of the private schools took the entire school to be PCR tested. Since they have boarders, any cases will spread like wild-life. That one school could have led to hundreds of cases being recorded.
It is not necessarily a generalised problem in all schools in the county.

Frazzled2207 · 14/10/2021 20:47

@pleasedtonevermeetyou
No you don’t have to stay off with a cold. It says quite clearly you stay off with covid symptoms AND a positive lft which most likely is covid and not a cold.

However the bit about close contacts is baffling as that could certainly be the whole class and is not in any way in keeping with government guidelines.

3asAbird · 14/10/2021 21:50

Apparently Banes sent this message to local schools.

Our schools still doing bit much we have cases evert year not sure how many but maybe half of year 11 off.
All we been told us separate year 11 other groups.
They may cancel 6th form open event next week.

Disappointed Bristol public health so quiet on this
Jabs won't be until mid November.
So after half term and close to mock
Form Tutor group today 25 off only 5 present..
Loads of teachers off in fact no teacher turned up at all to cover science

It really depends whether they have defined “symptoms” anywhere recently, doesn’t it?

People who’ve got et results from tests taken at Newbury Shiwground are being asked to retest because of some kind of lab(s) issue, hmmm:
