Scotland - 16 yr old got turned away at 2nd vaccine drop in

I went to get my second vaccine yesterday at a drop in session and the guy behind me was 16yrs old and wanted to drop in for his second vaccine too.

He was told by the security guard and then by a nurse that unless he had a health condition they weren't doing the 2nd vaccinations for 16yr olds and that letters were in the process of being sent out.

Just thought I'd share this info.
This was in Scotland btw so not sure of the rest of the UK.
I wondered if it was to make sure there'd be no shortages for the older folk getting boosters or something 🤔

It’s always been the case (in England anyway) that 16 year olds would get one dose - that was the decision of the JCVI when vaccines were approved for 16 year olds so it shouldn’t be a surprise.

Yep, 12-17 are only having one at present, unless CEV or living with someone CEV.

They're phoning people though to let them know they were sent in error.

My ds1 doesn't really understand why he isn't able to have a second dose. The messaging in Wales has been a little better, from what I can tell.

Yes sorry was just meaning if folk weren't aware, don't send them along cause they won't get it!
I didn't actually know this but I also don't have a teenager Grin

Yes, the boy and his dad were quite confused. The dad did say the boy got his letter and the staff were just like "yeaahhh, nooo, more letters are being sent out to say they aren't getting them"

I felt sorry for them making the trip and the boy was obviously keen to get it.

Is it not that the risks of myocarditis are higher I that age group especially after the 2nd dose and especially in younger males?

Only the most vulnerable or those living with vulnerable people will get a 2nd dose in that age group.

Yes they said that it would only be people in that age group with health conditions that would get it.

The myocarditis risk does seem to have been a factor in Wales but I can't find any communication about how the decision was made in Scotland.
It seemed like early on, with daily briefings etc our comms were decent but this feels really rushed and vague.

Not that I would prefer lots of teenage boys to have myocarditis.

I wonder if there's a supply issue again as my 18 yo was turned away from a drop in yesterday (Edinburgh) because they'd run out. They are also moving the vaccine centre to a very inaccessible out of town location from Friday.

So he's coming home at the w/e for a place closer to home.

I wondered if they wanted to keep stock back for the boosters to ensure all the older people are prioritised coming into the colder weather.

They tried to stop the drop in centres in North Lanarkshire and Glasgow on 1st October but then did a U turn the next day. As they are now doing boosters and flu jabs I imagine they have to conserve stocks for those who have appointments

We are in Surrey, only drop in is on Sunday, 15 miles away from us. I saw an ad for volunteers as a lot have gone back to work and I presume most of the vaccinators are doing the 12-15 school age children.

It’s not a supply issue !!!
It’s because there was a higher incidence of pericarditis and myocarditis after the second dose in males and females, but the males slightly higher still.

And in my area it’s the GP surgeries doing the schools, not the vaccination teams. The vaccination teams are busy with an even bigger flu cohort this year, reception through to year 11.

The OP is talking about Scotland. We have drop in centres for all age groups and the GP has nothing to do with covid vaccinations. They are not doing covid vaccines in schools either

Nothing is well organised in Scotland!
Just look at the shambles over vaccine passports, the British Army having to be called in to drive ambulances, the care home scandal, the ferries fiasco, the decline in education, etc. The SNP couldn’t run a bath, let alone a country.

I was an SNP voter until the last vote but I can't stand them anymore @Babdoc Unfortunately it seems like people are getting even stronger feelings of support for them...I'm shocked!

That is interesting. My 17 year old DS (nowhere near 18) had a flood of texts prompting him to get a second injection from 4 weeks after his first. We ignored the first few because we felt it was too soon, but have now booked him in for 8 weeks after his first. I am still slightly confused by the mixed messages.

We're in England.

Thanks, @dementedpixie. Her appointment is in about 10 days. Should I just phone and cancel it? How weird - is it just an administrative cock-up or have they changed their minds (I thought they knew about the heart inflammation when she had the first one)?
