Scotland - 16 yr old got turned away at 2nd vaccine drop in

I went to get my second vaccine yesterday at a drop in session and the guy behind me was 16yrs old and wanted to drop in for his second vaccine too.

He was told by the security guard and then by a nurse that unless he had a health condition they weren't doing the 2nd vaccinations for 16yr olds and that letters were in the process of being sent out.

Just thought I'd share this info.
This was in Scotland btw so not sure of the rest of the UK.
I wondered if it was to make sure there'd be no shortages for the older folk getting boosters or something 🤔

I did just try to call. Was holding for over 10 minutes then went through to an answerphone. Hmm

You'd think they'd put out a communication if they thought they'd messed up - it's a 22 mile round trip to the vaccination centre. The appt was just by email (luckily to me) and text to my daughter's phone so I'd have thought easy enough to put something else out.

Thanks very much for the warning!

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 07/10/2021 12:33

They said they were sending out letters but I agree, just put a notice on Twitter or as part of the news at 6 or something...don't know what's so hard to let people know!

It's an administrative cock up @LatinforTelly
They are cancelling the 2nd appointments.
Under 18s only getting one dose until there is more data available.
The very small risk of myocarditis is with 2nd dose

LatinforTelly · 07/10/2021 12:48

Thanks, all, that's really helpful. What a shower, honestly. Their incompetence knows no bounds!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 07/10/2021 12:49

My 17 year old had his 2nd dose yesterday at a walk in centre. We're in England.

Yepnothatfeeling · 07/10/2021 12:52

I don't understand this - I am in Scotland and have a DC in s6. DC has friends who are 17 who have had their second vaccination. Where is the clarity on this???

Yepnothatfeeling · 07/10/2021 12:58

To clarify, these are friends who are more than 3 months from their 18th birthday, not clinically vulnerable or carers - but have still had second vaccine.

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 07/10/2021 13:01

@Yepnothatfeeling yeh so I think they had been dishing out the second vaccine but not anymore

Or maybe it's cause they are 17+some months...I'm not sure

So it seems like they might still be planning on a second dose but at an undetermined time?

Musicaltheatremum · 07/10/2021 14:18

@LizzieMacQueen

I wonder if there's a supply issue again as my 18 yo was turned away from a drop in yesterday (Edinburgh) because they'd run out. They are also moving the vaccine centre to a very inaccessible out of town location from Friday.

So he's coming home at the w/e for a place closer to home.

I was at ingleston yesterday for my booster covid and flu Jag. Waited an hour. When my colleague went that evening they had an hour and a half wait! They had run out on Tuesday so had double the amount of people going through and vaccinating very slowly.

Hi, Just to update this, we got a letter this morning saying that the 2nd appt had been sent in error and we shouldn't attend unless my child falls into one of the groups listed in dementedpixie's link above. Thanks again everyone.
