Are people no longer bothered by Covid….?

Is anyone actually bothered about Covid?
From places I’ve been recently, everyone is just “normal”

I took my son to a toddler class this morning.

I walked in wearing my mask. Room full of 19 other adults and their toddlers.

Not one single adult had a mask on (expect me)
There was no distancing in the class.
It was as normal as normal can be.

I joined a new slimming class tonight.

Again I walked in wearing a mask. No one else had one on.
All chairs pushed up together, people sat close.

I don’t get it.

How can we go from distancing, mask wearing, avoiding people on walks (which is exactly what it was like) to nothing….

I am astounded what a selfish nation we are. It takes very little to wear a mask on a train. Mask wearing was always about protecting others. You may have Covid and give it to someone else. That someone may spread it to a vulnerable person

This. Masks are for protecting people who are vulnerable.

The selfishness is no surprise though - we have the most vicious Tory government for many years; people think Boris is a hoot, and they'll vote for a Tory government again, regardless of their fuck-the-poor-and-needy MO.

A complete lack of collective social responsibility and a void where plain old compassion should be, is where we are.

I have zero respect for people whining about 'but I don't waaaant to wear a mask anymore' and the similar refrains. Vulnerable people deserve better than that.

BoredZelda · 30/09/2021 20:52

I dread to think the damage masks have done to babies/toddlers development.

Utter nonsense. Given there are places where women successfully raise babies/toddlers with face covering, it is ridiculous to suggest there will be any problem.

TBH you could argue that it was selfish to not wear masks even before COVID- a whole host of diseases can kill the vulnerable, and most are contagious before symptoms develop. It's definitely selfish not to wear a mask when you've got a cold, regardless of whether it's COVID. However, it's not something that we do as a culture.
BoredZelda · 30/09/2021 20:54

In England when they introduced masks cases went up. Masks are theatre.

More nonsense. Masks have consistently shown to be effective in reducing the spread of all airborne viruses.

MajorCarolDanvers · 30/09/2021 20:55

I'm jealous. I'm in Scotland and we still have to wear the bloody things. Although compliance is lessening.

Parker231 · 30/09/2021 20:55

Am still wearing a mask on the Tube, in shops and crowded indoor places. Many of our local shops are still making masks mandatory.

Not to be Nasty the vunerable.have a duty to protect theirselves, nope I'm not wearing a mask protect yourself it isn't my responsibility.

People deserve better than people whining about people not wearing masks.

Oh fuck off.

If you want to know how effective masks are look at Scotland, who are still using them and have had the highest number of cases of the whole pandemic a couple of weeks ago.

And before you start, both my parents, and my daughter are CEV.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 30/09/2021 20:59

i was in the booster vaccine queue, none of the older folks practiced any social distancing!

ArcticLemming · 30/09/2021 21:01

I’m no personally worried, but wear a mask indoors with lots of people BECAUSE I want to get on with my life. I work at a uni where we are expecting thousands of young people from all over the world to sit in an unspaced lecture theatre. I’m not worried by this but am worried by cases getting so high we end up back online. I wear a mask to model the behaviour I want from my students that will hopefully play a small part in keeping us all on campus this semester.

XingMing · 30/09/2021 21:02

@user3456, interested in the origin of the statistic you are quoting. Is that all deaths of 0-8 yo's or those explicitly and directly caused by COVID this month?

fluffi · 30/09/2021 21:02

Still bothered. Still avoiding some things that are too high risk - e.g theatre. Wearing medical grade mask on public transport and shops. I've been wearing masks for some long now that its just become habit to put one on when entering shop or station. And if I get one less cold a year then its well worth it!

HappydaysArehere · 30/09/2021 21:02

Despite a poster requiring everyone to wear a mask on buses so many people ignore this and the driver says nothing. Haven’t been on trains recently but presume this is also the case. Forget Covid I am hoping that wearing a mask will protect us from Winter bugs. Often fed up with being surrounded by coughing people on buses when the cold weather arrives. A simple thing and I believe worth it.

That’s exactly the problem. We have a government that tells people to take responsibility for themselves. But the only way to make everyone safe is to think about others. It’s about public health not just your health.
RobertaFirmino · 30/09/2021 21:05

I'm happy to mask up in public places, out of consideration for others, but on the whole, I can't be bothered fretting. If I am going to die from Covid, I'd rather make sure the time I've got left is full of enjoyment.

cushioncovers · 30/09/2021 21:07

To answer your question op. No I'm not bothered anymore I'm double jabbed and will have the booster jab and the yearly flu jab. I have to wear a mask at work and hate it. I don't bother wearing one anywhere else.

I agree where masks are mandatory (e.g. public transport), they must be worn.

But you can’t expect to wear masks when they are not required.

hollyivysaurus · 30/09/2021 21:10

I went to a soft play this morning and it was similar, playgroup last week was the same. I've stopped wearing my mask at them as I've felt a bit like I was the only one - to be honest I do worry about covid but my oldest is in school and I work in a secondary school surrounded by 1500 students. I feel like I'm going to get it at some stage whatever I do!

Ihatefacemasks · 30/09/2021 21:12

They are not mandatory anywhere, regardless of what a poster on public transport might suggest.

Imknackeredzzz · 30/09/2021 21:13

Oh for gods sake- masks do nothing to stop it spreading anyway. So glad the bloody things are gone- I’m so over Covid now- life has to go sodding on!

Peoniesandpeaches · 30/09/2021 21:13

I’m still masking up and will be for the foreseeable. After waiting 2 years to start IVF we are almost there and I don’t want anything to jeopardize it (or stop us earning to fund it).

boredwithfoodprob · 30/09/2021 21:15

Yep I’m one of those people. I’ve forgotten what it’s like to wear a mask - heaven. I’ve had my 2 vaccines and now getting on with living life as normally as possible. There are risks with everything in life, we need to stop draining our energy into covid now.

pelosi · 30/09/2021 21:15

@Ihatefacemasks

They are on Transport for London. Reported yesterday on BBC:

The TfL enforcement teams have been out every day since the rule change on 19 July. Since then officers have refused 223 people entry and asked 53 to leave TfL services.

Yep...it's like living in an alternate universe being in this country. I just returned from working in Switzerland where masks are mandated in all indoor spaces, all public transport, supermarkets, etc. This is how it is in most of the rest of the world.

We're at over 36,000 cases today and 137 deaths...this is absolutely nowhere near over. Do people just NEVER learn? We could just wear masks and distance and take precautions and we'd all be able to get on with life but no, we're probably going to end up in yet another lockdown with Christmas ruined, because people just cannot accept that viruses don't go away just because you want them to.
