So my oldest son had covid at the start of the school holidays, confirmed by PCR, he was ill for a couple of days but quickly recovered all good, and neither myself or dh tested positive
Last week my son was comaining of a sore throat, cold like symptoms he testex negative on a LFT i cant get him to do a pCR as it hasent been 90 days since he had covid
My youngest was sent home from school on Thursday with similar symptoms, hes at a special school and some children are very medically vulnerable so they wanted a negatjve PCR which hes had
I now have the same symptons as both boys im testing negative on LFT, s surely we cant have two different virus, s in the house?

Well, you could. It's probably most likely the same, but no guarantee.

dementedpixie · 25/09/2021 20:49

Probably the common cold if not covid

shouldistop · 25/09/2021 20:56

Why do you think it's 2 different viruses? Could you not all just have the same cold?

NinDS · 25/09/2021 21:01

I’m so glad you have posted this because my daughter is really quite ill with what appears to be the common cold. She caught covid in March this year and wasn’t as ill as this. Done lateral flow tests and all negative. She has sore throat, full on head cold and a high temperature but she is eating and drinking fine albeit feeling rough and tired. We are certain as we can be that it’s not covid. I also work in a school and we’ve had several teachers off with similar symptoms (what they call the worst colds of their lives) and all negative PCR tests. Anyone else experiencing similar?

x2boys · 25/09/2021 21:01

Yes i think we all have the same cold, i just dont really want to have to get a PCR.

I know several people who have suffered from a really bad cold in the last few weeks who have all had negative covid tests.
If covid can circulate easily then so can other viruses, I think we've become pre occupied that covid is the only/main virus out there lately. I hope you are all feeling better soon .

I had one of the worse flus of my life ( negative pcr) over the summer, tools weeks to recover. It also hit a couple of my colleagues
BewareTheBeardedDragon · 25/09/2021 21:12

My theory is that our immune systems have got out of practice from the unusual protection measures of the last 18months, so normal viruses are hitting harder. Isn't the common cold also caused by corona viruses? The only reason they aren't usually serious is because our immune systems have developed defences through repeated contacts over years, right? (Rusty biology...)

worrybutterfly · 25/09/2021 21:13

There is a really bad cold going around at the moment.

It went around our whole house, we were convinced it was Covid, but multiple negative PCR and LFTs between us were negative.

Rest up and look after yourselves. For us (in our 30s and young DC), we were much sicker with this virus/cold than with Covid.

kickupafuss · 25/09/2021 21:16

We’re all ill with this horrible cold virus too. DD had 3 days off school last week and it’s looking likely that she won’t be well enough to go back on Monday. I’m glad I’d stocked up on every cold, flu, cough and sore throat remedy in case of COVID! Negative tests all round.

Yeah pretty much. I am not looking forward to this winter with my 18 month old who will get every cold going and hasn't had a chance to build up her immune system.
CoffeeWithCheese · 25/09/2021 21:22

There's a shitter of a cold going around, and then there's also the "man" variant of the same virus which is obviously a hundred times worse. Kids have all had it and been left with lingering coughs, and DH has had it and has been reduced to a vocabulary consisting of the phrase "cup of tea, milk two sugars please"... negative on tests and school have been fine having them in as the Head is very much accepting of the fact we've got a year and a half of school transmitted bugs to work through on backlog.

There's also a lovely D+V one doing the rounds as well - that one was responsible for half a week off second week of term.

NinDS · 25/09/2021 21:22

Thank you everyone. I really hope you’re all back on the mend but I’m also relieved to know that it’s not just us imagining this and something else is going around. Hugs and get well soon wishes to everyone experiencing this! 💐💐💐

HairyFloppins · 25/09/2021 21:24

Me and dd have the worst cold I have ever known, on day 7 now and only starting to feel human. We both had negatives PCRs.

We had Covid last December and this is worse.

Get well soon.

greenlynx · 25/09/2021 21:26

Sorry I’m a bit confused have you got PCR test or not for yourself and for DS2?

Turboface · 25/09/2021 21:26

Ds son got bad cough and school told him to have a pcr. He had covid in July . The pcr test came back negative. It seems he had some other virus giving him cough. Taking a test is so easy and results came in twenty hours. Next time they get send to home for cold symptoms I take them to test straight away and with luck the results come before school starts.

x2boys · 25/09/2021 21:29

Sorry yes ds2 had to have one he goes through o a special school and they have a lot of medically vulnerable children, so fair enough hes negative.

My children also have a terrible head cold and minor temperature and wiped out etc, off school. Could be immune system catching up or could it be a Covid mutation current pcr tests not picking up on?

FreeBritnee · 25/09/2021 21:39

No covid here but the kids brought home a really nasty virus that had DP using a nebuliser and me, who is usually the healthy one, feeling absolutely horrendous.

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 25/09/2021 21:41

Yeah we've had this. First DH now me. We got married last week and one of our guests has since tested positive but we are both negative. Cough, sore throat, aches and pains, feeling hot and extreme tiredness.

NinDS · 25/09/2021 21:53

Yes totally like this and it’s worrying! Like someone said, it could be a strain that the tests aren’t picking up on.

HungryHippo11 · 25/09/2021 22:39

Could be immune system catching up or could it be a Covid mutation current pcr tests not picking up on?
Its just yet another cold. The mutations of the covid virus are very well documented and constantly tested. They would know if it had mutated to such an extreme degree.
