This aspect is the worst part for me. I'm just producing crazy amounts of mucus no matter what I do and it's making me gag and vomit and feel panicky

Can you speak to a pharmacist and see if Exputex or similar would help? It’s designed to help liquefy phlegm and make it easier to expel - I’m not sure if that would be a help or if it is simply the amount that is the issue.

Hope you find something to ease your symptoms.

Graphista · 20/09/2021 17:28

Thank you I'd not heard of that. It's the amount and the consistency. The stuff coming out nose is fairly thin and easy to expel. The stuff in my throat is thick and gunky and keeps making me gag! I hate that feeling!

HSHorror · 20/09/2021 17:48

If will get thicker if you get dehydrated. So avoid drinks with sweetners etc

MaraScottie · 20/09/2021 17:57

Avoid milk and any other dairy.

middleager · 20/09/2021 18:39

Cough sweets were the only thing for me when this happened in March 2020. Not sure if it was Covid as you couldnt test readily then, but I had stacks of mucus and managed to suck on Lockets which helped a bit.

FreshFreesias · 20/09/2021 19:27

There is an excellent herbal expectorant that helped me called elecampane.

OddBoots · 20/09/2021 19:33

Dh has had a cold with lots of mucus but it has been helped by cold and flu tablets with Guaifenesin, his were Morrisons own but I am sure many other places sell them.

peachpearplum01 · 20/09/2021 19:48

I had this too in my throat, it was horrible and made me gag/choke. I found lying on my front with my head tilted downwards helped..

Graphista · 21/09/2021 00:31

Pharmacist said they were unable to help I'd need to speak to dr

I've got soothers, antiseptic lozenges, halls menthols etc but I think they may be making matters worse as they're sugary/syrupy

They work WHILE I'm sucking them but as soon as I stop I'm coughing and gagging and vomiting again

Guaifenisin might be something I can get hold of. I'm kinda stuck as housebound and don't have anyone can bring me stuff though I've been given number of the volunteer service which I feel a bit cheeky using but I might need to.

Couldn't call drs today as they were closed by time I got off phone to pharmacy so will try them tomorrow.

I get prescriptions delivered by boots and they're usually pretty good if it's urgent they've come through for me in the past.

I'm so totally fed up of feeling so crap!! No let up.

I really don't wanna go to hospital but I'm getting scared sometimes.

That may be the impact on my mh which is poor anyway

I had this every couple of days for nearly a year after having covid in early 2019, with constant breathlessness in between. The only thing that helped short term were Jakemans Menthols ( the black ones). Beware of the amount of sugar in them though. Other menthol cough sweets may work, but we did try a few.

Sitting on the toilet with elbows on knees and head down gives temporary relief from any breathlessness. Raising the bedhead with a triangle pillow and only laying on the left side helped too, with both the breathlessness and I think the amount of mucus I am now producing.

It has settled down to once or twice a week now, still have to cough it up each time. X Ray a few weeks ago shows I have scarring in one lung.

Dryadia · 21/09/2021 02:47

2020 not 2019*

Brindle88 · 21/09/2021 02:48

Have you tested positive for covid? Where is the mucous, chest or nose?

Brindle88 · 21/09/2021 02:52

I have a horrendous cold and am having hot steamy showers to help my sinuses.

Suzi888 · 21/09/2021 03:05

I get this for about three months of the year, every bloody winter including the vomit.

Massage is meant to help (if you’ve someone who can do it for you). There was a YouTube video of two NHS nurses performing it, taps on the back etc to loosen it all…. I suppose you could use a back peddle perhaps. I had a flu jab last year and only coughed for a few weeks not if the jab helped or lockdown.
I find a bath helps to loosen it too, but nothing seems to last for long and it all builds up again. It’s exhausting and does give you a panicky feeling. Hope you shift it soon, if you cough up green phlegm I’d give the doctor a ring in.

Nat6999 · 21/09/2021 03:23

The only things that worked for ds were decongestants, taking Night Nurse at bedtime, lots of steam, he had hot showers every day, Vicks vaporub on the soles of his feet, chest & back every night. Avoid fruit & fruit drinks like fresh orange juice or hot lemon as they make it worse, eat a hot curry or chilli con carne with tons of garlic to help move the mucus. Drink gallons of water or herbal tea, avoid artificial sweetners, sleep propped up in bed, get those plug in vapor things that fill your room with menthol vapor.

TheTeenageYears · 21/09/2021 03:26

Cut out all dairy. Eat and drink food and liquid that's as close to the bodies normal temp as possible and has as close to a bodies natural PH level as possible. Extreme temp and PH put strain on system and makes it produce more mucus. DH and I were sick with a mystery virus a few years ago with very similar symptoms to rona including a timescale of 6 weeks plus. I did a lot of research at the time, it was hell. Oh also a couple of spoons of good quality apple cider vinegar a few times a day helped too.

Graphista · 21/09/2021 04:44

Oh god I really hope I don't have this for a year!! It's been a week and I'm already at end of my tether!!

I've got halls menthols

Yes I've tested positive

Mucus is nose/sinuses and throat one nose blow soaks through a whole sheet of kitchen roll. Tissues are useless

No shower, don't feel safe having a bath (live alone don't have anyone that can watch over me)

It's clear/white at the moment but yes if it turns green or yellow I'll get onto dr

Really struggling to eat/drink much at all. Lost nearly 1/2 stone in a week

Can't get apple cider vinegar where I am out in the sticks somewhat

I know I'm getting dehydrated as my pee is really dark though plenty of it still.

I'm trying to sip as much water as possible I just feel horribly bloated and nauseous

Brindle88 · 21/09/2021 08:08

If you have no shower you could try boiling some pans of water and sitting in a steamy kitchen.

Brindle88 · 21/09/2021 08:11

I’m struggling with this at the moment. My lateral flow was negative and my OH says the mucous and congestion is not corona. Now thinking I should book a pcr.

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 21/09/2021 08:16

I'm pregnant and so cannot take medicine but I've had a lot of sinus infections recently and I bought a Nettie pot from Amazon to flush out my nose rather than use tissues cause my nose was raw from it. And honestly it was amazing!
The amount of gunk it flushed out and actually lasted a wee while so I could sleep ,it was so good.

Of course you could have covid and be asymptotic and have a cold.

I think id buy a benelyn chesty/phlegm-y cough medicine on Amazon

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 21/09/2021 08:17

And being dehydrated will not help. You need to keep hydrated and the mucus should be looser then.

Hopeisallineed · 21/09/2021 08:23

I order my apple cider vinegar over the internet and get it delivered. You can do this with any decongestant/medication etc as well that’s not prescribed.

QueenoftheKarens · 21/09/2021 08:25

Keep drinking.
I have the same issue, drank over ten pints of water yesterday and I feel a bit better today.
A hot shower too let the steam really get into your system it will help unclog.

QueenoftheKarens · 21/09/2021 08:27

Also put your mattress top at a high angle, stick some towels under it or something. It will help your chest drain over night. Hope your feeling better soon, this is an awful virus.

Graphista · 25/09/2021 19:52

Thanks all. Been drinking as much as I can it gradually got better but there still is an awful lot. I'm not having dairy or anything else that I know can make me produce more mucus it seems unavoidable.

Thin, white, bubbly mucus mostly. Just loads of it
