Is covid ripping through your school?

Both schools my DC attend and the school
I work at now have numerous covid cases for the first time!!! Is it just inevitable
that under the current guidelines, all these kids are going to get covid? The staff feel like ticking times bombs despite being vaccinated.
Like many establishments, we have newly
of staff, vulnerable staff, staff with vulnerable family members, very anxious older staff.... It's nerve wracking waiting for it to hit!

Yes lots of cases in both kids schools, one school previously had very low levels (rural) and now its about 10 times level it once and increasing. Other one had loads before the summer and not giving data but DD knows more kids there with covid than without. Both secondary, y10 and y11. We have also been quite ill with it as has DD and we are both double jabbed though I'm late 40s / DH mid 50s, I have asthma which has not helped.

MrsMariaReynolds · 23/09/2021 19:45

None so far this term at the primary school I work at, but DS's secondary has a handful of cases in nearly every year group. School has stopped officially telling us numbers, though.

Silkiescatz · 23/09/2021 19:46

We have one secondary telling us, the other not.

Valenciaoranges · 23/09/2021 21:09

Yep - some classes have 50% absence. Double jabbed staff also have it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/09/2021 21:32

My DD’s science partner has it. Nothing from school at all.

BunsyGirl · 23/09/2021 21:39

5 confirmed cases out of approximately 1000 students.

Squidlydoo · 23/09/2021 22:16

We had 20% of students absent yesterday - most because of covid. 8 came to reception and were sent home vomiting this morning.

It’s everywhere.

SimonaLynn · 24/09/2021 00:30

On Monday I had 12 positive cases out in one class, six in another and eight in the last. 20 - 25 class size. Guidance is now that if the child is positive no work is provided as they are supposedly sick. And some kids are, but in many cases they could be working at home.

I tested positive today making me the fifth staff member out and my DC tested positive. Their teacher has been out since the middle of last week as well as four classmates.

It really is everywhere. Of course it is not making the headlines but so much disruption in schools. And kept so secret - I only found out about the cases in my DC class from parents. Not a word from the school.

Lots of kids out in our school (which is giving them work)

HelloDulling · 24/09/2021 06:54

In my school we have about 20 off, inc my DD. No staff have had it this term, though, which suggests vaccination programme is doing its job.

I wouldn’t say it’s ripping through the school, we have one year group where lots of them had it, presumably caught from each other, but the other cases seemed to keep it to themselves. We are really pushing the regular LFTs.

gingercatsparky · 24/09/2021 07:03

Yes, after getting away with very few cases last academic year it is now shooting through the school. Everyday there are more cases in my dcs classes and teachers coming down with it. We have had several lateral flow and PCR tests but so far avoided it.

Sunshinealligator · 24/09/2021 08:02

Our school stopped communicating the numbers with us, long long ago.

We have a high amount of cases in our area, and we have also had no news regards vaccinations.

TheGrumpyGoat · 24/09/2021 08:03

As Chris Whitty said all unvaccinated people are likely to get it, probably time for us to stop being surprised when kids catch it.

Lavendersquare · 24/09/2021 08:28

I'm in Wales and have taken a cautious approach to everything, no eating out, no indoor socialising etc, and outbid the blur 9 yr old DS has tested positive. The only place he could have possibly caught it was school.

walksen · 24/09/2021 09:03

"As Chris Whitty said all unvaccinated people are likely to get it, probably time for us to stop being surprised when kids catch it"

Seems more likely that everyone will get it as vaccines are not sterilising.

Well yeah, that too, although I believe you have less chance of catching it when vaccinated. I’m just a bit bemused at people expressing surprise that their kids have caught it at school, or that there are lots of kids with it at their school. It’s bound to happen 🤷🏻‍♀️
BlackeyedSusan · 24/09/2021 09:12

We are not being told.

Lots were off in March 2020.

Then school were hit quite badly in Autumn 2020. Ds was off for the equivalent of half a term (6 school weeks) they did quite well when they went back after lockdown 3 then a few cases but not as bad as last Autumn.

BlackeyedSusan · 24/09/2021 09:16

I suspect that most schools are going to get hit badly by it at some point, possibly more than once if immunity wears off. Just a case of when. It would be a fascinating study to do.

IncessantNameChanger · 24/09/2021 10:33

Does anyone know if they are just a parent in secondary or college? Now the symptoms have changed and without knowing if it's in the class, how many are going to miss it without the the three main symptoms?

BabyYouKnowMyHandsAreDirty · 24/09/2021 10:42

We aren’t being told officially by the school but my children say there’s lots off with it, kids and staff. One of my children has been for a PCR test this morning as she has a high temp. Also sore throat and headache. I’m expecting it up be positive as a couple of kids in the same form that she sits next to tested positive earlier in the week.
It was always going to spread like this.

pommedeterre · 24/09/2021 11:38

We got dd a pcr as the mum of a school friend she hangs out and works with with all the time texted to say her dd had it. Nothing from the school. DD is positive and part of a reasonable year group.

Other than things like texts from mum I can't understand how close contacts are being identified now. Test and Trace just asked for her school name and any contacts out of school (just us luckily).

Bennetgirl · 24/09/2021 15:59

@pommedeterre Did you just have a pcr or a positive lft as well?

My dd has been in close contact with several positive friends this week but I’m only using lateral flow tests. I wonder if I should get a pcr as well?

Silkiescatz · 24/09/2021 16:00

My DD was negative on all LFTs as were 2 of her 4 friends that got it and all positive on PCRs.

Silkiescatz · 24/09/2021 16:01

They all had gastric and cold symptoms. Not the 3 official symptoms but other symptoms.

TangledTrees · 24/09/2021 16:03

Yes, but the school isn’t saying anything to parents, so all info is via the community.
