Is covid ripping through your school?

Both schools my DC attend and the school
I work at now have numerous covid cases for the first time!!! Is it just inevitable
that under the current guidelines, all these kids are going to get covid? The staff feel like ticking times bombs despite being vaccinated.
Like many establishments, we have newly
of staff, vulnerable staff, staff with vulnerable family members, very anxious older staff.... It's nerve wracking waiting for it to hit!

That’s a hugely skewed denominator. We don’t ask adults at the workplace to follow this, imagine the disruptions if we did.

Umm...maybe I have an unrepresentative peer group - disproportionately public sector - but everyone I know who isn't working from home is advised to follow the same 2 x weekly LFTs as adults and secondary pupils in schools, and ALSO do PCRs as close contacts.

Also, the case rates are rising fastest in 10-14 year olds - no 10 year olds test regularly (primary) and nor will any 11 year olds in Y6. They are also rising in the next age group down - 5-9s - and none of them are required to test at all.

Under the 'letter of the guidance', no school pupils who are close contacts in schools have to do PCRs, as schools don't do contact tracing and T&T don't 'count' close school contacts. So in fact that depresses, rather than increases, the number of tests taken in situations where infection is most likely, compared with the population as a whole.

Definitely NOT a case of 'disproportionate testing'. ONS is random, and shows the same picture - why would this happen if it was an artefact of testing??

No, Covid is not ripping through DC's school.

There is a cold ripping through the school though (everyone has negative tests). This cold does come with the normal associated cough. Still not Covid though.

Nidan2Sandan · 26/09/2021 14:12

Nope, 2 students in our secondary and 1 in primary so far. I expect that to rise.

MLMbotsno · 26/09/2021 18:44

Getting better in our large secondary. Cases rose and now falling a bit

User5827372728 · 27/09/2021 15:22

We had 44 off today with covid

User5827372728 · 28/09/2021 12:51

Ah panic over it’s ok! We are going to wipe down each desk in between lessons again!

HagridHair · 28/09/2021 14:12

@User5827372728 that's a lot!

Phew, good thinking. That should nip it in the bud!

Grandson off today a bit poorly school insisted on a PCR test his brother has to stay off too. Different rules for different schools??

Gherkingreen · 28/09/2021 17:36

Yup, it's been ripping through our NW secondary school for weeks. Yr11 DS is on final day of isolation tomorrow after being ill with covid last week. No one else in our house has caught it. Doesn't seem to be impacting 6th form where other DS goes, where the majority of students have had at least one vaccine.
Imagine if high school students had been offered the vaccine over summer...

CrispsnDips · 28/09/2021 17:47

Our local schools in the Midlands have high cases and mask wearing between lessons/in communal areas will be mandatory from tomorrow. PHE will monitor figures and then bubbles next Wednesday if figures rising.

pullingmyhairout2 · 28/09/2021 18:00

There is loads going round our secondary. My daughter is off with it, all her friends are off with it. My son says there's loads missing from his year. But not surprising when they won't inform the other children of close contact so they can get a test!

Kettletoaster · 29/09/2021 12:56

It was rife in DDs school (primary) last week. The head sent all afected year groups home for a PCR and they werent allowed back in until they had a negative result. Seems to have done the trick, for the time being anyway. Cases have fallen considerably this week.

sunflowerdaisies · 29/09/2021 12:58

There is currently one case in my children's school, the first child confirmed since it all began (one teacher had it too). Waiting to see if more catch it.

I do know of two families who had it over Christmas though but didn't need to tell school.

Which type of tests are the negative tests to which you refer in these cases? I've got COVID at the moment, positive PCR result yesterday. All my lateral flows have been negative. I went for a test because DH tested positive on HIS lateral flow. He had a runny nose and felt tired. I'd had the same last week, but tested negative on my first PCR last Thursday. Maybe I've had first a cold, and now COVID on top, I don't know.

But I do know that the lateral flows are clearly not picking up cases very well anymore.

Jowak1 · 29/09/2021 13:10

My daughter (10) has just tested positive this morning. There have been about 4 cases in her class of 30 so I think it will spread through her class.

Porcupineintherough · 29/09/2021 16:03

@CurlyhairedAssassin its called "the yuck" here (S. Yorkshire). Ripping through secondary schools - big snotty cold, w temp, sore throat and cough. But pcrs all coming back negative. Obviously we have covid too but what's going through us all like a short dose of salts is not that.

The Yuck is ripping through schools in n Wales too. Five children in our family all tested negative. I read somewhere that if you have a different virus the immune system in high drive is repelling covid

Itsnotallaboutyoubaby · 29/09/2021 17:28

No idea. They don’t say anymore

Hm2020 · 29/09/2021 17:44

My sons primary seems to be doing ok 1 form entry but in central last school year the whole school was closed numerous times because it had ripped through the school. Though I will say majority of parents and staff are still wearing masks.

Hm2020 · 29/09/2021 17:45

Central London*

ilovebagpuss · 29/09/2021 17:53

We have high rates in Shropshire. My DD’s school is now saying they have been advised to change the rules so that children with a positive parent do stay off until they return a neg PCR. So they are going with this from next week.
It’s sensible but it still annoys me that now there will be all different rules all over the shop. If things need changing it should come from government surely? Keep all the rules the same.

pourmeanotherglass · 29/09/2021 21:52

Loads of teachers off at DD school with a bug that isnt Covid. Sore throat, lost voice but test negative. Lots of kids also have colds. Some off with Covid but a lot more off with colds.

MrsSlocombesPussy · 29/09/2021 21:57

Lots of cases at my DS's high school. Next week the NHS are coming in and doing PCR tests on those children with parental consent

Bennetgirl · 30/09/2021 04:32

We've still got covid and the other virus. Dd2 was off with it this week.

Hot, cough, sneezing and a headache. Tested negative. She's been more ill then the kids with covid! Most of those have been asymptomatic.
