Anyone got any confirmed cases at their child's school yet?

Well it didn't take long 😂 DS started Reception this week and today we get an email saying they have 5 confirmed cases in the school over several year groups.
I suppose it was inevitable really!
Anyone else know if any confirmed cases in their child's school since they started back?

Up to 4 in the affected class now.
Not being horrible but surely this is not only what is expected but also not necessarily a bad thing?
As its a primary school none of the children will be getting vaccinated any time soon, so surely it's better that it's over and done with?
All the parents and teachers are either double jabbed or have had the chance to be. Personally I would rather that if my youngest was going to get it he did as soon as possible. Covid isn't going to go away and I'd like him to start building up resistance now, when the chances of it affecting him more than a cold are miniscule. (I know covid is not a cold, but from what I've seen when most young children get it they have either been asymptomatic or just had cold symptoms and for the record for some children a common cold can be life threatening, it was for my older son).

I'm still fairly certain that what we now consider a common cold was pretty deadly when it first appeared and no-one had ever been exposed before. Its just that now we've been exposed to it multiple times from babies we've built up a level of resistance that (for most of us) it's little more than a nuisance. Hopefully this will eventually happen with covid.

None that we are aware of in our DD's secondary.

But both DH's DSiblings have their families in isolation due to 1 of their DCs being a close contact of a positive case in their respective schools (over 2 hours away from us, and over 90 minutes apart from each other).

And 1 of my DSiblings also has 1 of their DC at home due to a close contact of a positive case in school - but their rules are different so only the DC needs to stay home and not the rest of the family.

BiddyPop · 16/09/2021 11:09

All 3 schools that have +ve cases above are primaries.

PileOfBooks · 16/09/2021 11:11

Maybe "they" are hoping it spreads and does the job now rather than in the midst of Winter?

It was blatently a plan to spread it - especially as schools like ours have told us it will be unauthorised if we DON'T send in a child where the family all have covid!?

Djifunrsn · 16/09/2021 11:12

Yes in our school. They tend to keep it secret now. I only know because I know the person involved.

OddestSock · 16/09/2021 12:06

7 confirmed in one class (my youngest being one of them) in primary school. Apparently no other classes are affected.

No idea how many in the secondary school, but my eldest is one of them.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 16/09/2021 12:09

@Whatever9999 I understand your point but there are still parents and teachers who are at risk. I'm double jabbed but immunosuppressant medication means it's pretty ineffective. My teenager was vaccinated as a household member but my primary age dc can't be. And I have to send them to school or I'll be fined.

HunkyPunk · 16/09/2021 12:21

Yes quite a few cases including my ds! Masks have been made mandatory again (unless exempt), but anecdotally not all teachers are enforcing compliance. Ds said many dc not wearing them. The Government needs to make them compulsory again in shops and schools imo.

Primrosejoy · 16/09/2021 12:26

@SillyBub

Loads at the primary school I work at. Loads at the 2 secondary schools the DC attend. One of the DC is a close contact after their best friend tested positive and is having a PCR today. It's just all around us, everywhere.
Where are you in the country?
Carameljack · 16/09/2021 13:46

We had one on the first day! Glad they got rid of bubbles!

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 16/09/2021 13:49

None so far

LauraLovesLemons · 16/09/2021 13:53

I work in a large secondary school of about 1400 pupils. Names of those testing positive are circulated every day so you can see if you've been in close contact with any of them and need a PCR. There are 2-4 pupils succumbing every day at the moment, this is in (what's at present) a fairly low case-rate locality.

AnnPerkins · 16/09/2021 13:56

Yes. DS has it. Several of his friends reporting same symptoms today but not yet had positive LFTs.

The neighbouring upper school has loads. I know of one class with 14 cases.

The schools don't let us know any more but parent groups are keeping each other informed on Facebook, Whatsapp etc.

They send around confirmed names on a mass email? Surely that’s against some gdpr / peoples private medical business!

@MrsArchchancellorRidcully

I think this is what's called 'learning to live with covid'. As long as these cases aren't translating into hospitalisations and deaths, then i wouldn't worry.
Sixth form college near me has several individual cases however it seems to be one here one there, not necessarily much evidence of spread happening in school itself (they caught off parents etc)
FindingMeno · 16/09/2021 14:07

Of course!

Kaley3043 · 16/09/2021 14:08

Not that I know of but I assume schools only start letting parents know when it's multiple cases rather than just one!

Babamamananarama · 16/09/2021 14:15

Those saying 'we've got to learn to live with it' 'best to get it over and done with' etc - please spare a thought for those of us that are clinically vulnerable. A lot of us have no protection from the vaccine and could become very ill if exposed. I'm recovering from a stem cell transplant for aggressive lymphoma and have had to keep my kids off school as my consultant's main concern for my health at the moment is covid and we can't risk them bringing it home.

It's not 'all over' - certainly not for a lot of people.

Frazzled2207 · 16/09/2021 14:21

@Babamamananarama
couldn't agree more. One of my Ds's classmates is CEV and just 8 years old so no vaccine yet. Her parents are keen for her to continue to have as normal a life as possible yet are terrified.

Meanwhile I'm fairly relaxed about getting covid myself but am terrified about potentially spreading to my dad who is vaccinated but has a compromised immune system and frankly the vaccine might be useless.

Just got a message from school saying that PHE has requested all students in years 7 to 11 do a one-off PCR this weekend if they haven't had a positive test in the last 90 days . 1500 students!!

Where abouts (roughly) are you BananaPB?
BananaPB · 17/09/2021 14:11

South East Home Counties.

AnnPerkins · 17/09/2021 14:15

Get yours booked asap before the rush!

I have several friends whose kids have had the same symptoms as DS this week but with negative LFTs they're still going to school. When DS goes back to school (positive LFT yesterday, PCR today) he's going to be the only kid in his class at this rate.

1happyhippie · 17/09/2021 14:21

We’ve just had an email from dds school.
Several cases throughout all years.
This was always going to happen, no mask wearing and no isolating households so it will spread more.
We’ve just been told to make sure we are using lateral flow tests twice a week.
Lots of dc aren’t testing now.

x2boys · 17/09/2021 14:46

My two only went back at the back end of last week, ds 1 is in year 10 at a mainstream comprehensive, they only told us last year if our kids had been in direct contact with a positive case , so im assuming it will be the same this year, hes had covid anyway at the start of the school holidays, caught from school
Ds2 has just started year seven at a special school, i assume they will only let me know if someone in his class or on his bus(school transport) test positive.
