Surely just bring the mask mandate back now?

They are an easy measure that are no real hardship and could help (even if just in a small way) suppress this virus surely we should just bring back our mask mandate now?

Unless you’re in NI maybe?

QueenofKattegat · 16/09/2021 12:17

I've just looked at the. Gov survey. Of all available mitigations if necessary mask mandate is the most popular - 58% support, closely followed by social distancing

Is this YouGov? The polling site that pay you for taking surveys?

"And BTW, you don't need to be "privileged" to accept the fact some restrictions need to stay in place - although some that like to sow class divisions would have you think that kind of thing constantly."

It was about restrictions. I already know that. That's why in my last paragraph I wrote ' even low level restrictions have consequences for people.

It wasn't about masks.

GoldenOmber · 16/09/2021 12:19

YouGov previously reported 10-20% of people thinking that curfews, nightclub closures and social distancing should be in place forever. tbh though, after a while on these boards they may not be far off with that.

ilovesooty · 16/09/2021 12:24

Actually all the people I associate with have continued to wear a mask in public spaces. I suppose it depends on your circle. As I said if I choose to wear one in a shop I'm not bothered really if others choose differently but I am more concerned about environments like public transport that people often have to use and can get busy.

Peteycat · 16/09/2021 12:25

"It wasn't about masks."

I bloody well know! That's why I highlighted in bold about restrictions! Arghhh.

Oh no. I just always show bullies up for what they are.

@Peteycat

"can't get too worked up about masks or not in large supermarkets but I would have preferred them to be expected on public transport where options regarding use and social distancing are more problematic."

So don't use public transport then. Its quite simple really, if you are scared, avoid the situation.

After all, if you're in an urban area in a minimum waged job you might not have that choice. Telling people to avoid public transport smacks of privilege.
GoldenOmber · 16/09/2021 12:29

I have to use public transport, but I also find masks quite difficult to wear for prolonged periods.

There’s maybe a case that even cloth masks can maybe help spread a bit for a short duration journey where you aren’t mixing with the same people maskless afterwards though? So I’m continuing to do it for now (as per the law here) but I’m a bit Hmm about people who seem to want this in place indefinitely, based on “well I feel public transport is a bit plaguey at the best of times and I feel that cloth masks are brilliant at reducing spread, so therefore everyone should be legally mandated to do this indefinitely”, when it’s presented as a generous thing for my sake.

Wanting mandates and restrictions back 'smacks of privelege.

I'm tired of the neurosis, that's why I said that.

ilovesooty · 16/09/2021 12:33

So @Peteycat you're not acknowdging that for many avoiding public transport isn't an option?

The manner in which you answered indicated you didn't understand the reason 'class division' was in the conversation - and you still don't.

Yes, the comment was specifically for you and you only.

I work in a minimum wage job and catch pubic transport, o don't care if someone wears a mask or not.

I don't follow - how would the (minuscule) payment on offer affect people's answers to individual questions?
Againstmachine · 16/09/2021 12:45

There is a certain group of people who like doing surveys ect, most people ignore them to suggest they are representative is absurd.

Peteycat · 16/09/2021 12:45

"don't follow - how would the (minuscule) payment on offer affect people's answers to individual questions?"

When there is a financial transaction in any situation, there is more than likely an agenda.

GoldenOmber · 16/09/2021 12:48

Mumsnet has always had a fair number of posters who are on the neurotic side about ‘germs’ and ‘dirt’ on public transport at the best of times. There was a thread not long ago where people seriously discussed changing clothes when they got in the house if they’d ‘had to’ take a bus or a train home.

So this idea that mandatory masks should be kept for public transport might be intended as a generous gesture for those of us who have to use public transport. But quite often it does sound more like it’s coming from a place of “urgh buses are plague pits and I don’t want the plagueiness to spill out onto the rest of us.”

As I said above, I am wearing a mask on public transport for now, but I would quite like to not have to do it forever - and especially not if the main reason is to assuage the neuroses of those people whizzing past in cars.

GoldenOmber · 16/09/2021 12:49

Sort of like the people promoting WFH-for-everyone and claiming it’s for the greater good, when they’re happy working from nice big home offices in nice big homes with nice big gardens. “But I just think it would be better for everyone if we agreed to do this thing that might reduce overall virus spread without inconveniencing me at all!” Do you, aye…

Peteycat · 16/09/2021 12:53

@GoldenOmber

I agree. Was talking to a mum last night about WFH, she said it was the hardest time in her parenting life. She did make me laugh though, she said her conservatory looked like a branch of toys r us that had been invaded by goats! 😂

Yes, the comment was specifically for you and you only.

Which is utterly ridiculous when my original opinion specifically referred to choice and options being problematic. You just don't like your sweeping post reeking of privilege being exposed for what it was.
Zig27 · 16/09/2021 12:56

I still wear a mask. About 50% of people where I live never wore them when it was law. Some of them thought it was a hoax or were bothered about their appearance. I had friends with asthma still wear a mask as they did not want questioning why they don't wear one.

You have no idea about my life, and if you read my other comments on other posts you will see that I'm not one for sharing a 'privileged' opinion. I think of others as much as possible, unlike you who describe choice and options 'problematic'.

Aw bless, are they 'problematic' for you because you suffer from neurosis? Well choices and options exist and they will continue to, because thankfully most people are rational, logical and sensible and don't have the same attitude as you m
