@noblegiraffe

I doubt it was the likes of Piers Corbyn who had any impact on this decision.
No, but maybe the thousands upon thousands of ordinary people who gave up their Saturday afternoon and got off their arses to march on the streets might just have been food for thought.

But of course, it’s only loonies like Piers Corbyn that objected Hmm

I wonder how well it is working in France now it has had a few weeks to bed down. In the first week I had the "pleasure " of going to a French McDonald's. The door was locked and you had to ring the doorbell to gain admission. My pass sanitaire scanned perfectly, my husband's didn't. Despite being able to show the QR codes for both double vaxx and negative test, neither would scan from his phone. He was grudgingly admitted but only because I'd gone in a few minutes ahead of him and our food was already ordered.

The place was deserted. I can't see that system working long-term for businesses like McDonald's Confused
I imagine in France it has encouraged lots of people to get vaccinated because getting a lateral flow test was a time consuming faff. We needed ours to come home but all the other people in the pharmacy were young people needing it for an evening out.

People use their partner's debit/credit cards on the Tube, or unregistered Oysters, or even their Nan's Freedom Pass all the time. What's to say the phone/pass the person is using is theirs?

For those caught using someone else’s annual travel card or their grandmother’s pass etc, it is an on the spot fine.
Outside of the UK those caught using other people’s covid vaccine passports are fined.

I was the one that said conspiracy theorists (like Piers) who would be disappointed as it would be one less piece of crap they could peddle. It was Peteycat who suggested that it was conspiracy theorists who managed to force a u-turn.

RolloTomassi · 12/09/2021 15:20

Excellent news. The right decision for us all, vaccinated or not.

As someone who was not in the conspiracy camp but feeling increasingly sick about the direction of travel, I couldn't be more relieved to be wrong!

More likely it was the millions of people who got off their arses and got vaccinated making it a pointless exercise to introduce passports to avoid the remaining 11%?

There’s likely a decent crossover between both groups but I know which factor I think was more likely part of the decision.

Mynameismargot · 12/09/2021 15:41

@sirfredfredgeorge

The ‘green pass’ here in Europe is just a QR code so you can just scan it on machine at entrance, as quick as you would Oyster card for tube travel or similar

How does it validate that the person in possession of the phone is the person the "green pass" is actually for?

You show ID. It isn't complicated.
lockdownmadnessdotcom · 12/09/2021 17:46

Well it would be complicated here, because we have no requirement to carry ID. While I don't have the same objection to ID cards that a lot of Brits do, you can't impose rules without carrying the people with you. There are limits, and having to show that you are vaccinated to get into a cafe is ridiculous. And where do you stop. Will flu be next? Chicken pox?

I am glad that Denmark is ending the requirement - if and when Germany does, I will visit. I don't mind proving I am vaccinated to get into the country in the first place - but beyond that - nope. Utter nonsense.

That doesn't make sense because every year there will be millions of kids turning 16 who would be eligible for the vaccine,therefore the 11per cent if that's even true, would change.

TensmumT · 12/09/2021 19:34

I hope this government also sees the stupid, stupid mistake it made by making the vaccine compulsory for care home staff. In an already struggling sector, using compulsion isn't the answer, engage with the nay sayers instead. Now carers are leaving in their thousands. What's worse this government wants to extend that ruling to the NHS, when the vast majority has willingly done it. For the few who don't want it for whatever reason, again engage with them, again compulsion is not the answer. Let's see how the 6 week consultation plays out.
