If you're still wearing a mask are you feeling a bit daft?

If I'm honest, I've never been completely convinced about the value of masks, especially the way most people use them, but I have always worn one in indoor public places since we were first asked to do, as I know it makes some of the people around me more comfortable.

I've continued since restrictions were relaxed, although admittedly I'm less concerned now if I find myself without one by mistake. However, I've noticed that I am most definitely in the minority now and I feel like people are judging me for being one of those paranoid over anxious types and I'm not, I'm just trying to do the right thing. I think people are huffing when I'm the only one in a queue wearing one and there's a delay because I can't be heard properly, for example.

So if you're still wearing one, do you feel comfortable doing so?

If you're not wearing one do you have an opinion on those who do?

The mistake so many people continue to make is that they think wearing a mask protects them. It does of course but the main reason we were all wearing them was to protect others (and by virtue of that ourselves too of course)

I’m still wearing mine indoors - as are the vast majority of people I see around me in most of the places I go.

I have met with friends and family in our houses without masks, and that feels fine - but small numbers and lots of ventilation.

If it gets to the point where I’m the only one wearing one, I don’t think I would feel silly so much as, if no-one else here cares about protecting others (which is the main function of them if not properly fitted FFP3), then why should I mildly inconvenience myself to protect them?

ExpulsoCorona · 07/09/2021 17:17

OP I'm still wearing one at work when I see patients, am I daft? Should I stop bothering? Some of them have Covid. When I wear my mask in supermarkets and on public transport, it's to stop me spreading anything without knowing. I could stop I suppose but haven't yet felt daft doing this.

Bennetgirl · 07/09/2021 17:20

Still wearing them and couldn’t care less what anyone thinks! I’m 31 weeks pregnant though so trying to avoid catching anything!

Most people her are still wearing them x

Abraxan · 07/09/2021 17:37

I wear them in places where other people do so. Locally people are still wearing masks in supermarkets and bigger shops, so I will pop one in. I worse on in the hospital and pharmacy. I wear one in the playground when doing the drop off/pick up with parents as requested by our LEA.

If no one else is wearing a mask in a venue, then I will not bother. If they are, then I've always got one handy.

Do I feel daft wearing a mask? No, of course not.

Mojoj · 07/09/2021 17:39

I don't care.

LIZS · 07/09/2021 17:42

Still wearing indoors, no issue. Was in minority on a recent long train journey though.

moynomore · 07/09/2021 17:47

Judging people who don’t wear masks has always been fine on here.

And I still do. As a previous poster has said, the masks provide more protection to others than to the wearer. I honestly think those not wearing them in places like the tube in London are utterly selfish.

SMBH · 07/09/2021 17:59

It’s easy for me - I know, when I am wearing a mask, that I’m paranoid and not over-anxious about covid, so I don’t assume anyone else wearing one is either. And I also know that when I’m not wearing a mask, I’m not a selfish wanker who doesn’t care about CEV people, so I don’t assume that other people not wearing masks are like that. So it’s easy for me to go about not really concerned about what other people are doing or thinking with respect to covid

SMBH · 07/09/2021 17:59

not paranoid obviously

Whammyyammy · 07/09/2021 18:04

I dont bother with them, but don't look down my nose at those that still get comfort from doing so- its a personal choice.

knittingaddict · 07/09/2021 18:18

@FfrothiCoffi

I really don't understand why non mask wearers care so much

I don’t think they do, do they? So far I haven’t seen any non mask wearers say they’re judging people for wearing them.

Well op seems to think that they might have an opinion and I've certainly seen an opinion or two on here. Face rag, muzzle mean anything to you?

@SMBH

“I really don't understand why non mask wearers care so much.”

I don’t think they do, going by this thread. Most of the judgement is the other way, so you can stop worrying. There was a lot of concern on here about people being abused for wearing masks after 19th July and I certainly haven’t encountered any when I have worn one. Judging people who don’t wear masks has always been fine on here.

Well there's a reason for that isn't there? A very logical one.

If you believe masks work then of course you care whether people wear them or not.

If you think they don't work then there's no good reason to care whether others do or not.

FfrothiCoffi · 07/09/2021 18:24

Well yeah, I’ve seen people on here say that they refuse to wear a ‘face mask’ or a ‘muzzle’. Doubt they give much of a shit what other people do though. And why would anyone care what they think anyway?

BlueBlancmange · 07/09/2021 18:28

I wear an FFP2 mask in all indoor public areas. I don't feel daft doing so. I will continue to do so for the time being, certainly while cases are still high.

Here we go again. It's not a comfort blanket fgs and that is typical language from the anti mask brigade.

I wear one because I think it helps to prevent spread and also reduce viral load. I know it protects others more than myself if I wear a mask, but that's ok with me. If more people wore a mask I would be safer, but I can't control that.

DumplingsAndStew · 07/09/2021 18:29

@BroccoliFloret

Very much looking forward to my holiday in England in a few weeks where I can go wherever I like without a mask or the lanyard of shame

The lanyard of shame? I guess that all depends if you're the sort of person who thinks a disability is something to be ashamed of, since that's what the lanyards are actually for Hmm

SMBH · 07/09/2021 18:36

It’s not so simple as believing whether masks work or not. I have more complicated things to weigh up, and I expect many other people do, which is one of many reasons why I don’t make assumptions about the choices people make around mask wearing.

bizboz · 07/09/2021 18:42

Mask-wearing has dropped dramatically round here. I still wear one, mainly out of consideration for the shop staff who are exposed to lots of people and who mostly
seem to be expected to wear them themselves.

UsedUpUsername · 07/09/2021 18:54

I think it’s weird to wear one when you aren’t mandated to do so.

But then again, I sometimes wonder if mask wearers I see are immunocompromised. If that’s the case, they should be wearing an N95 respirator to actually make a difference.

I saw a young lady wearing two masks (one an N95!) plus a face shield. I assumed she’s got an underlying condition and wished her well.

bigbeatmanifesto · 07/09/2021 18:56

Plenty of people still wearing them in my local shops and supermarkets including me, so I don't feel daft I'm going to keep wearing one for the foreseeable i think, I haven't had a sore throat or cold since I started wearing them.

ZoBo123 · 07/09/2021 18:57

All the posters responding that they will continue wearing them because they have had less colds this year, could it possibly not be the masks but the other measures? Sanitising, ventilation, social distancing, paying people to stay at home, isolating while waiting test results, cleaning surfaces?

alreadytaken · 07/09/2021 18:59

I'm not physically comfortable wearing a mask - but I do. Those not wearing masks are idiots who have ignored the large number of people currently in hospital with covid and I couldnt care less about their opinion.

MMM2 · 07/09/2021 18:59

not in the slightest, I dont care what other people think, im protecting myself .

FlyingScott · 07/09/2021 19:00

I think it’s weird to wear one when you aren’t mandated to do so

Really? Think of all the other non-mandatory things you do every day out of courtesy, decency and respect.
