news.sky.com/story/covid-19-vaccines-will-not-be-recommended-for-healthy-children-aged-12-to-15-government-advisers-say-12398444

Is anyone else glad this potential decision has been taken away? I was very much undecided about vaccinating my older dc and now feel a bit of a weight has been lifted now its not something I need to consider.

After seeing Callum Semple all over the media today with no regard for young people's education and mental health, means I will not be letting my DC apply to study at Southampton Uni - he is a disgrace to that Uni and they should be ashamed to have someone who obviously blocked the vaccination of 12-15 year olds.
Is he part of the JCVI? They’re the ones who have recommended against it.
IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 03/09/2021 19:49

Should be a choice. If we can’t fund it due to cost of covid spending make it available privately at cost just like the flu jab is to those not eligible.

UsedUpUsername · 03/09/2021 19:50

Exactly the same number, the logical conclusion of which is this: parents of 12-15 year olds, your child's vaccine is now on a plane to that very wealthy low-Covid case and death rate country of Australia

Lol the crime here is that it’s going to a wealthy developed country when they should be going to places like India and South America.

Children are not a global priority. It’s criminal that people are pushing to vaxx them when they are not at risk.

clearly some of them are

@user823445234

I think once your 12-15 year old is on their 3rd self-isolation this autumn/winter/spring and mentally fed up and physically less fit, you all might reconsider whether a vaccine that reduced their risk of catching by 3 times might have been a valid option.

This is a future scandal.

The scandal is that such an absurd policy was in place at the first. We don’t do this with other respiratory diseases. Covid is endemic , we need to start treating it like any other disease
noblegiraffe · 03/09/2021 19:55

We don’t do this with other respiratory diseases.

What, vaccinate? Like the flu?

UsedUpUsername · 03/09/2021 19:55

clearly some of them are

And hey! Children with certain conditions can get the vaccine. This is always as it should have been.

Even better would be to get kids over a certain BMI vaxxed as well, since anecdotally all the children I’ve seen in media put into ICU have been obviously morbidly obese. They should be considered too, if not already (does anyone know?)

FfrothiCoffi · 03/09/2021 19:55

We don’t usually vaccinate 12-15 year olds for the flu, no.

Namenic · 03/09/2021 19:56

Agreed - should be a choice. There is some evidence from other countries which have vaccinated children. People should be allowed to weigh up the pros and cons - different children have different exposures and different consequences from catching covid. Pregnant women have been able to choose and weigh things up (even when there wasn’t yet robust evidence - which has now grown and tipped in favour of vaccines). Families with secondary age children should be able to do this too.

But we are this year.
Lico · 03/09/2021 19:58

Other countries which vaccinate over 12s. Germany does vaccinate the over 12s.

We don’t demand that children isolate themselves for days on end for merely being in contact with others who’ve tested positive to the flu, no.
bumbleymummy · 03/09/2021 20:02

@Piggywaspushed

My DS has just had covid marsha btw (unvaccinated and passed it to me...) .He is still getting his vaccination as soon as he can. Vaccine + natural immunity is meant to be optimal state.
So the JCVI have found that the benefit of the vaccine is minimal for this age group irt benefit of immunity vs potential side effects but you’re going to vaccinate your already immune child anyway? Hmm
Piggywaspushed · 03/09/2021 20:03

He's 17 and yes he wants the vaccine.

noblegiraffe · 03/09/2021 20:03

We do vaccinate them though.

Roguehair · 03/09/2021 20:07

@bumbleymummy

The JCVI ruled on the individual risk/health of the child only.

Just as it should be. Children should not be taking a risk if it is not of benefit to their individual health.

Yep. They had several cardiologists who reviewed this data and they said this age group doesn’t need the vaccine(that was their remit). They don’t know the long term effects of the vaccine to start off with. They also said that Covid isn’t as harmful to them as previously thought and the risk of Myocarditis and Pericarditis is an issue. The only reason to vaccinate the under 18’s is a societal issue, no benefit to the children. We want to vaccinate children to protect adults
Watapalava · 03/09/2021 20:08

noble

my kids are 13, 14 and 15 and have never been offered flu vaccine

noblegiraffe · 03/09/2021 20:09

Interesting misrepresentation of the JCVI review there, Roguehair

OnTheBrink1 · 03/09/2021 20:09

@Howshouldibehave

12-15 aren’t vaccinated against flu
It increases every year so yes, 12-13 year olds WILL have the nasal spray this year!!
noblegiraffe · 03/09/2021 20:10

Wat give it a few weeks.

Surprised they didn’t have it at primary though.

MarshaBradyo · 03/09/2021 20:10

also saying children shouldn't have the vaccine could well confuse parents if they then change their minds which, oh, I don't know, could conceivably happen.

I’d prefer to know the criteria for the decisions as they’re made. That will help me decide if it is finally approved.

Roguehair · 03/09/2021 20:11

@noblegiraffe How am I misrepresenting them?

CarrieBlue · 03/09/2021 20:17

@Watapalava

noble

How odd. My DS is 14 and he was the last year group not to be offered it at his school. Each year group below his has been offered it and the offer has moved up as they’ve moved up year groups, so the year group below him have continued to be offered it. All secondary year groups are being offered this year, which just brings forward the universal offer a bit quicker.
HairyFloppins · 03/09/2021 20:18

All this talk of vaccines this popped up on FB, so looks like they will be offered a flu vaccine.

No vaccines for healthy 12-15 Yr olds
noblegiraffe · 03/09/2021 20:19

Because, Roguehair you said The only reason to vaccinate the under 18’s is a societal issue, no benefit to the children. which completely ignores that they said that the health benefits of vaccination were greater than the risks of the vaccine and that they only took health into account and not other benefits to children. There may well be other benefits to children on top of the (small) health benefits which were not considered, such as lack of disruption to their education.
