Primary school age kids with Covid - what was it like?

unim · 31/08/2021 21:58

I'm preparing for the start of school and feeling quite anxious about Covid as I feel it's pretty inevitable the kids will get it this autumn.

Please tell me what it's really been like, if your primary age child has had Covid? Especially if it was the Delta variant. I just want to hear a more representative range of stories so I don't freak myself out so much!

Feeling ok personally as although I am clinically vulnerable I am double jabbed (yay!) and have felt much more relaxed about getting it myself. But we've had some friends whose children have had it pretty badly and have long term problems since. But I know that statistically that's not the norm! So just trying to reassure myself as I suspect most children just get it mildly.

Thanks so much.

My dd, who was 10 when she had covid, had a high temp and a continuous cough for 4 days..she tested positive on a Wednesday and had these symptoms until the Saturday, both things stopped as suddenly as they started. She felt generally rough, was lethargic and lost her appetite, didn't lose her taste but said that the little she was eating didn't taste right. I would say it took around 10 days from her positive test for her to be back to her normal self.

Notdoingthis · 31/08/2021 22:08

It was like a mild cold.

KMBM107 · 31/08/2021 22:14

My 8 year old teetered positive beginning of August. Started with a headache and feeling tired. She complained of loss of taste - was eating a roast, she normally smoothers in mint sauce. She said couldn’t taste it. At that point we obviously tested. Another day or 2 she complained of headache and had lack of energy. By day 3 she was running around garden and on the trampoline. She’s had worse colds/ent issues before. For us it really wasn’t that bad. Her 5 year old sister remained fine aswell

Tested’

idontlikealdi · 31/08/2021 22:23

Dts had a mild temp for about 12 hours and a snotty nose. Y5.

turboface · 31/08/2021 22:26

Dd9 had hoarse voice and was tired. No other symptoms. Ds11 had headache and was tired for one day. No other symptoms. Dh had it as well and was only very tired. I didn't catch it (double vaxed).

Terriah · 31/08/2021 22:26

Mine currently have it - Year 2 and Year 6. They had runny noses last week, then youngest said things tasted funny on Friday, after that she's been fine. Oldest said things tasted funny for a few days and she literally coughed 5 times on Sunday. She's fine now. No high temps, fatigue, anything like that.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 31/08/2021 22:29

Year 2 child with a history of horrible chest infections - spent two hours on sofa with a headache and then was completely fine.
Year 4 DD no symptoms at all.

Neighbours child - spends winter being hospitalised regularly for breathing difficulties (year 1). Got Covid was slightly under the weather for 12 hours.

Lakeshore6 · 31/08/2021 22:33

10 yr old had a headache and temp but otherwise ok

12 yr old hyper , absolutely nothing wrong

Bobholll · 31/08/2021 22:37

Mine had zero symptoms but was horribly, horribly grumpy. She was adamant she didn’t feel ill but she was a real joy for a couple days 😬😂 Arguably ate a bit less than normal. Then was fine. I only tested her because I had it & her baby sister (who had symptoms like a heavy cold for a few days).

EnigmaticIcelandShopper · 31/08/2021 22:41

DS 9, day 10 of quarantine today, sore throat and fatigue for a couple of days at the start. None of the three main symptoms. Everyone else in the house avoided catching it, without changing how we usually interact (we're very much huggers)!

Lindy2 · 31/08/2021 22:45

My 10 year old's symptoms presented as a vomiting bug. She felt sick and was vomiting for a couple of days. My 12 year old was the same but her symptoms were a bit more severe.

We wouldn't have thought it was Covid from their symptoms but as both DH and I had already tested positive we knew they were likely to also have it when they became ill during our isolation.

TheSunnySide · 31/08/2021 23:04

My DS (10) won't do a test but I am on day 8 after testing positive and am pretty sure he has caught it as he has lost his sense of smell and two days ago had a temp of 38.4

Before that he went off his food and was quite subdued a couple of days before the high temperature. Other than that he has been quite perky and annoying!

unim · 31/08/2021 23:17

Gosh, those actually sound really really mild.

I've got my fingers crossed that if my two get it, it will be the same.

DS age 7 when tested positive and asymptomatic. Had a slight snotty nose week before but otherwise no symptoms of being ill.

OneMoreForExtra · 31/08/2021 23:23

Mine both had runny noses and red eyes, slightly tired for a couple of days. I only even thought about covid because half their classes had tested positive with the same symptoms.

Christmasfairy2020 · 31/08/2021 23:47

11 ywar old went to summer school as she starts comp soon and it was a fun week in prep for starting. Anyways on the Sunday she had sore eyes and chest pain. Thought nothing of it. We went to butlins the next day. Thursday comes and she couldn't smell. Did lft and positive. No other symptoms just fatigue.

Dd2 aged 6. Fever of 39 for 3 days. Day 4 lost smell. Fine afterwards. She was still running around wrecking house

danadas · 31/08/2021 23:49

We all got it in Jan 21. My 8 year old came out in a viral rash and a mild headache for a day or two.

ThePersonFromPorlock · 01/09/2021 00:02

My 9yo nephew had it and his only symptom was a fever. Bracing myself for my DC coming home from school with it. It's rampant in NI.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 01/09/2021 07:22

8yo DS had it last week, caught it from me. His main symptoms were a temperature, runny nose, bit of a cough and a bit more tired than normal. Exactly like a mild cold.

mmmmmchocolate · 01/09/2021 07:26

11 year old, had dark circles under her eyes and then was extra tired for 2 days after. I wouldn’t have even tested her for these symptoms but 2 of us in the house had tested positive.

Thischarmlessgirl · 01/09/2021 08:58

My three DC all had the Delta variant, all had mild temperatures, one had a day of d&v, they all lost sense of taste and smell and were a bit lethargic but bounced back within a few days, the adults in the house were definitely hit worse!

coffeepleeease · 01/09/2021 09:01

My 5yo had it in July, after OH and I had it. She had a slight cough but that soon disappeared, followed by a high temp of up to 40 for 6 days, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue and a rash. She does suffer with all viruses though and this was the same as other viruses she's had apart from the high temp lasted longer

toots111 · 01/09/2021 09:08

My kids have it right now. No symptoms at all. Just picked up on a lateral flow we did because I’ve just had it.

OliveTree75 · 01/09/2021 09:41

My 8yo ds had it with just a sore throat. 5yo and 10 month old no symptoms. Both my friends primary aged kids just had it with no symptoms for either of them. I am a primary teacher and none of the kids who have had it in our school have had more than mild cold symptoms, if any symptoms at all
