Do you know of anyone that's been seriously ill or hospitalised

After having BOTH vaccines?
Just that really. Wondered if anyone know of anyone that's been seriously ill having been confirmed tested positive for Covid after having both vaccines?

Yes I do. They were admitted to hospital with breathing difficulties but recovered well. They are morbidly obese.

Bubbublish · 28/08/2021 00:40

I'm double jabbed, no underlying health conditions, a bit overweight, spent 10 nights in hospital, it was touch and go at one point but I made it. I'm recovering slowly

Snaffletrousers · 28/08/2021 00:54

My 81 year old uncle had it a few weeks ago and ended up in hospital for 2 weeks. They told him it was 50/50 but ended up needing only oxygen and then was sent home. Still gets a bit tired but generally ok. They told him that if he hadn't been double vaccinated it would more than likely have been a different story.

Me, my DH and DD have just had Covid. Came out of isolation last week. And we have had extremely mild symptoms. DD only lack of taste and smell which is now back and me and DH have had a slight cough, very slight temp at various points and loss of taste and smell. DH worked from home the whole time. If it had been a pre Covid cold, I would have still gone to work, out for dinner etc.

Similarly I know lots of people who’ve had it. It’s hardly uncommon.

I know one person who’s died and two who are disabled with long Covid, all caught pre-vaccine, all between 30-40 years old. Nobody I know who’s caught it post-vaccine has been seriously ill.

Themeparklover · 28/08/2021 01:38

My whole family bar me tested positive with one sister and both parents having been vaccinated so far (ie younger siblings and parents) I am 23 and do not live with them. My dad got quite seriously ill a few weeks back and ended up on CPAP on a long covid ward, he lost a lot of weight and muscle, developed other health issues and has now been released but is on bed rest, a lot of medications and cannot work for at least 4-6 weeks, cannot walk further than the bathroom and back. I'm still a firm believer of the vaccine as I believe it saved his life, he is overweight, severe asthmatic with multiple other health conditions and although it seemed bad it could have truly been much worse.

CheeseTiger · 28/08/2021 05:08

Always wonder what people mean when they say someone is “very unwell” or “very poorly”. Hooked up to a machine? Unable to survive without being in hospital?

32inchtv · 28/08/2021 05:30

@Hallomother

This thread makes for sobering reading. Had been feeling a lot better and getting back to normal since having both jabs.
I feel the same after reading this
BritWifeInUSA · 28/08/2021 05:38

Nope. And I don’t know anyone who’s been very sick or hospitalized who wasn’t vaccinated either.

timetochangeagainforever · 28/08/2021 06:24

I do, sadly know someone who died, aged 45, no pre existing conditions - went into hospital, then transferred to a central London specialist hospital and put into a coma and tragically never came out of it. but he did NOT have the vaccine. It's terrible, he's left a 3yr old son and a wife. It's awful. We have his funeral on 3 Sept.

cptartapp · 28/08/2021 07:35

Interesting that people say 'no existing health conditions'. Many thousands of people have underlying conditions but just don't know it yet. As a nurse that does health checks I see this all the time. Hypertension, pre diabetes etc. Even gum disease is a chronic inflammatory condition.
A random check of non overweight running 'fit and healthy' DH's BP at home last year found it to be sky high. Further checks with the GP showed his cholesterol through the roof. No symptoms. No idea.

Flowerlane · 28/08/2021 07:36

A friend was admitted about 4 hours ago to hospital. He has had covid for the last two weeks and been very poorly at home he is double vaccinated.

Know a few others that are double vaxxed that have also been hit hard with the virus. Thankfully not been hospitalised.

Before vaccinations were available we lost a couple of elderly relatives who were in their 80’s as well as 2 friends in their 50’s.

Also have 2 close relatives that are both receiving hospital treatment after having the vaccine. One is serious.

I don’t know of anyone personally.

But on a population level, I found this FT graphic useful - shows how much protection being double jabbed gives but why there are still people in hospital (basically, a small percentage of a big number is still a significant amount of people).

Do you know of anyone that's been seriously ill or hospitalised
Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/08/2021 07:59

No. I know people who have had Covid after vaccinations. I had it after one vaccination. No one seriously ill. For me it was no worse than a cold.

HelloMissus · 28/08/2021 08:22

I know several people personally (ie not a friend of a friend) who have caught Covid after being double jabbed.
None were ill enough to need medical treatment.

SpringRainbow · 28/08/2021 08:27

To be honest I don’t know anyone personally who has been hospitalised/ died with Covid throughout the whole pandemic. I do know ‘of’ people.

However, I don’t know anyone who has had Covid since being vaccinated.

Everyone I know or know of who had Covid caught it in December/ January before they were vaccinated.

Hoppinggreen · 28/08/2021 08:29

@Hoppinggreen

I know a semi pro sportsman in his 40s with no underlying health conditions who was rushed to hospital a couple of weeks ago. He was double vacced
I would also say though that I know 2 people who have died from Covid who were NOT vaccinated so perhaps this person was saved by the vaccines?
MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/08/2021 08:30

my dd had covid after being vaccinated, i think 2 months post the second vaccination but very mild
isnt it 12 weeks after the second vaccination immunity is meant to be better.

LubaLuca · 28/08/2021 08:34

Yes, the daughter of a woman I work with. She's in her late 30s, otherwise healthy and not overweight. She thinks she caught it at a funeral where 8 other people also became ill with covid, but I think she's the only one that was hospitalised. She was in for a couple of days until she could breathe effectively without oxygen.

vegas888 · 28/08/2021 08:36

Seems very random as to who gets covid and how seriously they are affected. I’ve a 90 year old frail aunt who received her first jab in January and then a few weeks later caught covid and had no symptoms. She’s since had her second vaccine and is absolutely fine.

lifehappened · 28/08/2021 08:52

Yep! 3 people

Lelivre · 28/08/2021 09:26

@LifesTooShortYOLO presumably you or someone you are are positive and double vax and you are worrying?? Or you are trying to decide if the vaccine makes you worse as some anti-vax suggest?

Maybe your question should be who knows someone who is double vax, exposed or working with covid patients and has got off lightly?

There are vaccinated people in hospital but % this is small compared to infections. The charts of infections v hospitalisations and deaths are vastly different from last year when there was no protection. It would be better to seek this data for reassurance than some anecdotes.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 28/08/2021 09:37

Yes but they're both medics so presumably it is because they had a higher vital load than the norm.

One 30s ITU for a week

One 50s was in hospital but not ITU. Both recovered the seriousness of it but the younger of the 2 is still not right and now a long covid patient.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 28/08/2021 09:38

I should add that most of the ITU patients in my previous trust are definitely younger this time but unvaccinated.
Some have had none
Some just one.
