@Sunshinegirl82

Out of interest does NZ have any domestic vaccine production capability? If not, is there a plan to build/increase domestic production?

I think something to come out of this situation is an awareness that every country that is able to needs to be looking to be as self sufficient as possible going forward when it comes to vaccine production.

Well yes it does. Of course. But we have the population of south London. 6% of that of the uk. So it stands to reason we have 6% of the people who can produce these things and no funding from e.g EU that has built huge centres of excellence.

I agree attitude to lockdown will be different for many there.

Here we’ve done too much and many would choose to avoid it over nearly anything.

I’m actually not surprised some would do this path for a long time, if you don’t want to leave the country that is.

The thought would make me panic but I couldn’t be closed off like that.

MapleMay11 · 18/08/2021 07:26

We just need to hold out till Xmas. Then we can open up knowing that covid will spread but people will get less sick and fewer will die.

But how can you open up safely if vaccine uptake remains low among Maori and PI populations? There will still be high rates of transmission of a highly contagious variant, even among double vaccinated people, which will quickly spread to the high-risk unvaccinated members of the population.

LimeRedBanana · 18/08/2021 07:28

You’d be surprised as to what doesn’t make you panic, when it comes down to it. Not being able to leave the country isn’t actually one of those things. Wink

And I say that as someone with Irish in-laws that we’d usually see every year, either her or over there.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 18/08/2021 07:28

What a day. Everyone is trying to remeber how to do level 4 😂 Mask? Takeaways? Distance learning?

Good luck to everyone going out for vaccines. I found the process seamless, phoned up, call answered in about 6 seconds and got a next day booking. Minimal waiting at vaccination centre.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 18/08/2021 07:31

@MapleMay11

There's no point worrying ahead like that, it's not as if we have any control over the situation. But I feel confident given how we've been treated so far. And as pp pointed out, not everyone is busting gut to leave the country.

I know it’s not the same for everyone

But to me - if it were long term as pp wanted, ie past vaccination decade, yes it would.

I couldn’t live locked in one country. I do have family in Aus (im Aussie) and I’m in U.K. obviously it hasn’t been great being locked out but I’ve dealt with it. But long term past vaccination is a different ball game.

Insert1x20p · 18/08/2021 07:36

The thing is, NZ is quite big so at least NZers can go on holiday in NZ and see something they haven't seen. Try living in HK where we effectively cant leave (I mean, you can but only if you can manage to book a quarantine hotel for 3 weeks on the way back in), and you can drive from one end to the other in an hour Grin.

AuntieMarys · 18/08/2021 07:36

DSS in his 30s is in Auckland. Refusing the vaccination.

That's a shame.

Most of the cases identified today are in their 20s so unlikely to be vaccinated.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 18/08/2021 07:39

@MarshaBradyo

We are not locked in. It's that others are locked out. We can leave, we just have to quarantine on return.

MapleMay11 · 18/08/2021 07:41

50ShadesOfCatholic But this lack of foresight is why many people are so sceptical of Jacinda Ardern's strategy. There's a wealth of data from numerous countries demonstrating what will happen.

Quarantine is prohibitive for many though.

It is for me trying to get to Aus and family there who haven’t left.

Some might find that ok but the reality is it’s a huge barrier.

Is travel allowed though? As even if I wanted to go / or they leave - we’d need approval

Well you see that sounds nonsensical to me especially coming from someone in the UK which has been chaotic for the past 18 months.

Why do you say there is a lack of foresight? Where are you getting your information?

@IslandSnow

This thread in a nutshell:

Some people: you’re doomed NZ!
NZers: Yeah, nah, we’re fine thanks
Others: you’ll learn! Just wait! Doom is coming!
NZers: Yeah nah we’re actually fine with this lockdown, we’re okay
Others: But the dooooom! You not accepting our doom-laden scenarios is proof of your smugness! Hahaha bet your sorry now
NZers: yeah … we’re fine thanks …
Others: Doooooom!

Bergamo Feb 2020: You're doomed UK, prepare! UK: No we're fine with what we're doing thanks Bergamo: This one's different, you need to prepare! Bergamo: But the dooooom! You not accepting our doom laden scenarios is amazing to us! What is wrong with you? UK: Thinking about all the detailed plans and avoidance of covid thus far World beating, best plans, so ready, Happy Birthday To You 🎵 Bergamo: Sigh

The UK and the world should have listened to Northern Italy when they told us what was coming. NZ should listen now as the world tries to tell it that Delta isn't original covid, lockdowns don't work for Delta unless they are in perpetuity including supermarkets. Even then, you'll have a collapsed economy, starving people, and mass protests (more spread).

Mass vaccination at breakneck speed is the way out now and cancelling 2 days of vaccination appointments is insanity. I also noticed that essential workers no longer have access to school for their kids and presumably babysitting is illegal, so with a high level of female participation in the skilled economy there will start to be critical staffing shortages, especially in hospitals, also in logistics e.g. food.

IfYoureCrappyAndYouKnowIt · 18/08/2021 07:45

@MarshaBradyo we aren’t “locked in”. We can leave the country. We can holiday (without needing to quarantine) in some Pacific Islands and until recently we had a bubble with Australia.

Like most Kiwis I have close family abroad. But I’m in no hurry to go there and I certainly don’t feel trapped.

GammyLeg · 18/08/2021 07:47

@PicsInRed Vaccination only stopped for one day, back tomorrow. We’re doing all we can with where we are, no point running around screaming “we’re doomed”. She’ll be right.

You are different to Aus with rules?

So all you need is to be able to afford quarantine?

No other control on numbers

I do feel locked out of Aus where I have a passport so it’s the term I use.

GammyLeg · 18/08/2021 07:50

Is anyone getting a sense that these posters with their “you’re all fucked cos we know stuff your health officials don’t” desperately WANT to see NZ fail? Were you the same posters who went off the MN rails last March?

IfYoureCrappyAndYouKnowIt · 18/08/2021 07:51

Sorry @MarshaBradyo I don’t understand your post?

We had a travel bubble with Australia until recently - no need to quarantine. That went to custard when NSW cases spiralled.

FiveShelties · 18/08/2021 07:52

@50ShadesOfCatholic

Oh *@FiveShelties* I hope your birthday celebrations go ahead!!

I was at Italian cooking tonight and the tutor brought champagne to celebrate "the last supper"

Thank you - I love 'the last supper' idea!

I don't think we will be coming out of Level 4 on Saturday, the announcement is due on Friday but I have a feeling we will stay here for a few more days.

MarshaBradyo · 18/08/2021 07:53

I mean that even if my parents were fine with quarantine they couldn’t leave Aus

And I couldn’t go without meeting rules - not anyone can just go without approval

Is it the same in NZ? Do you need a reason / approval or do you just need to choose to quarantine?

IfYoureCrappyAndYouKnowIt · 18/08/2021 07:54

@MarshaBradyo oh I get you. No, anyone can leave. But if you leave you’d probably expect to stay away a while - even if you can afford to quarantine coming back, it’s hard to get the MIQ spots.

Mandalay246 · 18/08/2021 07:55

PicsInRed Given that last year you had NZers becoming hopeless alcoholics, and were warning us how dire things would be because of our risk of lack of vitamin D over winter - neither of which happened - I would butt out if I were you.

MapleMay11 · 18/08/2021 08:00

@50ShadesOfCatholic you told me yourself not to worry about how you will open up - how is that not a lack of foresight?
