I think NZ has done an amazing job at protecting its people. Saying that, the idea of not having the option to go visit my family would have been more than I could take and I would have taken my chances with the virus and left. Different if you all live there and don't care too much about travel abroad though. People saying it's just one case... The decisiveness of that lockdown is exactly why it's just one case! Boris still hadn't got his head around the fact that the earlier you lock down on the curve, the faster you're back out of lockdown!!

Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 08:01

10 cases now in the last 24 hours. All delta variant. I live in one of the biggest cities in NZ (not Auckland) and everyone I know fully supports this lockdown.

Yes the vaccine rollout is slow but yesterday before this news came to light we had vaccinated almost 50,000 people in one day. So it is starting to progress pretty quickly!

@GammyLeg

Is anyone getting a sense that these posters with their “you’re all fucked cos we know stuff your health officials don’t” desperately WANT to see NZ fail? Were you the same posters who went off the MN rails last March?
I think some people do yes.

Just like I see some NZs heavily criticise the UK on here and not all of it is justified. The UK is not NZ and vice versa.

I can totally see why NZ has went into lockdown. Its hard not to be a little jealous of the life people have been living the last 16 months or so in NZ compared to here. Although I think in the UK the realisation was always there that Covid is here to stay. I'm not sure that is the case in NZ?

What I do struggle to understand why there is not more anger about vaccinations- or is the anger there but you don't like the UK posters to be able to criticise something?

It's been clear for the last few months that Delta was going to get in. I hope you are only locked down for 3 / 7 days depending where you are and you quash this outbreak, but it will be back. I don't get why the vaccination centres weren't set up properly to operate in an environment where Covid was a risk. I don't get the laissez-faire attitude to Vaccination that the government seem to have been taken, at least until now. I think the messaging around Vaccinations has been questionable. I also don't understand why so many youngsters are getting vaccinated when so many of the vulnerable can't be yet (looking at the percentages of people vaccinated).

The choices JA has made so far have been pretty easy due to location of NZ. It's only now you see how good she is. I hope she does well, as looking I'm from thousands of miles away, she does seem very good, but I think she has underperformed on vaccines. She's on the back foot and I hope she can get back on top of things. People won't remember how she managed the beginning of the pandemic if it ends badly.

Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 08:07

@SuperFairy wow if you aren’t a kiwi and you aren’t living in NZ then what reason do you have to be so enraged by how we handle covid cases/vaccines?

This. Does. Not. Affect. You. as much as it does those living in NZ. Who are mostly happy to go hard and go early. Jacinda has handled covid 1000000x better than The US, UK or even Australia.

🤦🏼‍♀️ Covid-19 isn’t a bloody competition on what countries perform “the best” at keeping it at bay or keeping their death toll down.

PicsInRed · 18/08/2021 08:07
@PicsInRed Vaccination only stopped for one day, back tomorrow. We’re doing all we can with where we are, no point running around screaming “we’re doomed”. She’ll be right.
She’ll be right.

Oh fuck me 🤣

MarshaBradyo · 18/08/2021 08:10
@MarshaBradyo oh I get you. No, anyone can leave. But if you leave you’d probably expect to stay away a while - even if you can afford to quarantine coming back, it’s hard to get the MIQ spots.
Ok thanks that is different

The I’m not surprised NZ on here feel as they do. I appreciate there is still a positive look at online learning - to me something I’ll gladly avoid altogether, hopefully! But we’ve done so much.

Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 08:10

@GammyLeg you can really tell who the fellow kiwis are on this thread 🤣🤣🤣

PicsInRed · 18/08/2021 08:13

@Mandalay246

PicsInRed Given that last year you had NZers becoming hopeless alcoholics, and were warning us how dire things would be because of our risk of lack of vitamin D over winter - neither of which happened - I would butt out if I were you.
So creepy. 😂

I stand by what I actually said, and high rates of vaccination at extreme speed and across all vulnerable populations is the only way out now.

stclair · 18/08/2021 08:16

Guineapigbridge

‘Yup, most Kiwis are cool with lockdown. Deep down we love it. An earlier poster said we like the "low energy" full life and I kind of agree. ‘

Ha,I didn’t realise how high energy my family are then. They are definitely not cool with lockdowns!

And to those posters who say we can just leave NZ when we want, have you ever tried booking an MIQ space?! You could be away for a very long time!

MapleMay11 · 18/08/2021 08:19

@hazeleyednerd neither are my family members living in NZ. They've felt increasingly angry over Jacinda Ardern's failings around vaccine procurement and rollout. They certainly don't love lockdowns or closed borders.

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/08/2021 08:25

Of course it doesn't affect us as much as NZ, but does NZ not think globally - any country with low vaccination rates (of which there are many not just NZ) affects us all.

whatswithtodaytoday · 18/08/2021 08:27

I find it so strange that people are so angry about the NZ response. Personally I would absolutely bloody love to be there, compared to the shitshow the UK has had to endure.

It seems very obvious that they're just getting everyone possible vaccinated - and if they only got the big shipment in July it makes sense that's not done yet - and then of course they will open up.

whatswithtodaytoday · 18/08/2021 08:29

And the vaccination centres were closed because there were no protective measures. Because until a few days ago, there was no Covid. They weren't the big halls, cathedrals, empty shops with wide open doors, carefully managed GPs etc that we've all been to, masked and whisked in and out. They were like 2019. Because they had no Covid.

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/08/2021 08:31

I agree it looks lovely there! I'm amazed they felt the need to actually close vaccination centres even for 2 days and that they have no domestic vaccine production. Also I don't believe in the zero Covid approach, but it will be interesting to see how it plays out over there.
Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 08:34

@Bryonyshcmyony of course we think globally. Our control of covid has meant that any kiwis travelling back overseas aren’t bringing in cases to other countries and infecting dozens or hundreds of people?

Yes our vaccines haven’t been great up until now. Not my fault, and certainly not other kiwis fault. That’s on our supply and our governments roll out plan for vaccinations, which hasn’t been great but is improving.

I love how people are commenting on these threads being like “how dare NZ not think about the rest of the world with their poor vaccine roll outs!” How about the UK and other countries that have just let covid run crazy and pass to other countries through travellers without imposing ACTUAL lockdowns where people aren’t allowed to leave the house? 🤣 how have you been helping the world get on top of the pandemic?

PicsInRed · 18/08/2021 08:35

how have you been helping the world get on top of the pandemic?

Vaccines.

Terhou · 18/08/2021 08:35

172 days Covid free. 7 days lockdown for Auckland and 3 for the rest if the country

Even for people on the other island? That seems illogical. In fact 3/7 days is illogical - what will it achieve in terms of infection control realistically?

Terhou · 18/08/2021 08:38

How about the UK and other countries that have just let covid run crazy and pass to other countries through travellers without imposing ACTUAL lockdowns where people aren’t allowed to leave the house?

How do you suggest that would work? Should we close all the hospitals, police stations, electricity and gas production facilities, sewage plants etc? And do we all starve because we're not allowed to go shopping for something to eat?

Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 08:39

@PicsInRed little too late for all of those who died from covid pre vaccines. Anyway, I don’t see why non kiwis are concerned or judgemental about this in the slightest. This is how NZ handles covid and for the last 15 months worked extremely well and allowed us to return to normal life. Is this just something to complain about and judge for the rest of you?

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/08/2021 08:39

how have you been helping the world get on top of the pandemic?
By inventing vaccines?

🤣🤣

LimeRedBanana · 18/08/2021 08:40

I booked my vaccination a couple of hours ago for tomorrow.

Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 08:40

@Terhou what on earth? Supermarkets are open. Hospitals are open. Police stations are open. No one is starving. Everyone is just staying home unless it’s an emergency or you need food/testing

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/08/2021 08:41

God, lockdowns.

Hopefully never again.

LimeRedBanana · 18/08/2021 08:42

@PicsInRed

how have you been helping the world get on top of the pandemic?

Vaccines.

But we’re not going anywhere, so how does our slow vaccine roll out affect you / the world?

Anyway, as I say, I booked this afternoon for tomorrow.

PicsInRed · 18/08/2021 08:43

little too late for all of those who died from covid pre vaccine

Massive apologies, we'll get right to work on a time machine, which we will of course also share with the world, but for now our vaccines will have to suffice. Grin
