Normal life is back

I don't know about you but life where I am is pretty much back to normal, masks in shops falling rapidly. People having a good time. Covid barely gets mentioned now. (and yes I know people are still catching it and a tiny proportion will die)

It feels great. So what happened to the 200,000 cases a day doom scenario peddlers on here? They seem rather quiet.......

ineedaholidaynow · 11/08/2021 10:46

Many of the scientists were predicting high rates of cases this summer, it wasn’t just the doom mongers on here. Luckily, that doesn’t seem to be the case in most areas. Although as previously stated my local area is quite hard hit, but hasn’t been previously

herecomesthsun · 11/08/2021 10:48

also Sajid Javid if I remember correctly. Seems a bit strange to criticise people for listening to the Secretary for State on this.

NannyAndJohn · 11/08/2021 10:56

The worrying thing is that we seem to have found a floor of around 20000 (reported) cases a day.

In the long term this will probably turn out worse than if we'd have got to 100000 then gone back down to the ~2000 level that were were at previously.

Doodlebug71 · 11/08/2021 11:00

@herecomesthsun

How lovely people aren't dying, yes.

Otherwise, life is much the same (which is fine by the way)

If CEV people started going to nightclubs etc there would be a whole lot more people dying.

People are dying.

Life is much the same as what, precisely?

CEV people are wary of going anywhere. Out and about for walks is very different to going to a supermarket, with people not wearing masks or distancing.

Chickenwingz · 11/08/2021 11:11

Spent some time in England recently and it was 100% like normal life.
Back to Scotland and it's back to masks, socially distancing at work, children back to primary school on Monday with restrictions and no mixing between parents or children from different classes, everything has to be prebooked and we can't see GP or dentist unless it's an emergency. Already can't wait to head back to England when I can.

nomore3lw · 11/08/2021 11:17

@NannyAndJohn oh ffs.

Except perma lockdown, nothing will satisfy you.

Cases are lower that predicted - bad.
We have a vaccine - bad.

And @Thewiseoneincognito remember how no one was vaccinated last winter....

Frauhubert · 11/08/2021 11:23

I like how everything is almost back to normal but there is a bit of me worrying that we will have a repeat from last year come October. Summer was pretty good last year when everything opened, not many cases until mid September. I really hope this doesn’t happen this year.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/08/2021 11:36

@Thewiseoneincognito

Is life back to normal? Perhaps on the surface it may seem that way but I assure you, that is not the case long term. Make the most of the summer holidays whilst we are in the ideal circumstances of no school mixing, lots of outdoor activities, well ventilated rooms with open windows.

Now we wait for the vaccine resistant variant to show up, because as they have warned us, it’s coming. Our biggest mistake will be assuming we can live with Covid and letting our guard down believing we are over the worst.

I see so many more older people now not wearing masks and it just makes me feel like Chief Brody in Jaws when the Mayor insists everyone go back in the water, it’s safe.

Jesus Christ, it must be awful living life in a state of permanent misery!

What do you suggest we do if we can't live with covid?

Covidforever · 11/08/2021 12:03

@MarshaBradyo

Oh no I forgot you tagged me. Short memory 😫

Ignore what I said I’ll go back to skipping the depressing ones 😬

Hope you’re enjoying some sort of summer isn’t it nice to be freer.

I m enjoying the return to normality BUT it doesn't mean i think CV has gone away, like some seem to think.

With billions worldwide not vaccinated, nor with any chance of being vaxxed, covid has the potential to cause us more problems.

Anecdotally, around half those vaxxed are still getting CV (when isolating with those infected) mainly mild but longer term effects, so i now have an allergy to cats, before i got CV, around 6 weeks ago, i didn't have, i've also got a persistent cough - which is good when queuing - people suddenly move out the way, especially when i tell my partner the flight back from China was boring.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 11/08/2021 12:08

This was quite interesting

In the States some schools have gone back. Numbers seem concerning in schools there.

herecomesthsun · 11/08/2021 12:12

@Doodlebug71

We are spending a lot of time in the garden, playing games with the kids, making pizza etc. We have been on some long walks. Not much change to our normal. It's fine, the kids are extremely happy.

HighHighHopes · 11/08/2021 12:27

@Covidforever can you link to where on PHE it says that please. I can't find it. Thanks

Ooh they’ve resurfaced.

Quite impressive claiming that 20,000 cases are worse than 100,000...
Which will be most likely to overwhelm the NHS do we think? Because that really is the only thing the government are looking at right now.

Tuscancat · 11/08/2021 13:24

Chris Whitty predicted a floor of cases, and a steady level like this is a good thing. The nhs does not get overwhelmed and people can get the treatment they need.
Covid is with us for good, this is what living with it looks like. We all have to take our chances at some point. Science has done all it can but it cannot make us invulnerable to this disease. Plus the impacts of locking down and social distancing become intolerable at this point. Just look at the DV increase and the effect on women and children.

That's one of the best ones yet!

Very happy to swap Johnson for Nicola Sturgeon.

Not what I said at all.

It's all about the AUC (area under the curve).

I also was interested in this, as the Dying with CV etc is a common claim by conspiracists, i found nothing linked directly to PHE but i did find this on a BMJ article....
“In 90% of certificates where covid-19 is recorded, it does so in part 1 as the cause contributing directly to death.”

ExmoorValley · 11/08/2021 14:15

@NannyAndJohn. Can't take you seriously 🤣

Just look at the DV increase and the effect on women and children

A valid point. How do you marry that with the thousands of CEV people out there who are living in genuine fear? And the thousands more who are CV? There are a lot of people who struggle regardless of which angle you look at things.

Aposterhasnoname · 11/08/2021 15:33

Oooo, hello Nanny, I was waiting for you. On July 8th you said there would be 3000 hospitalisations a day in a month. What’s your thoughts on that today?

MarshaBradyo · 11/08/2021 15:33

I agree esp re the steady part. Isolation rules change on Aug 16 which is another switch.

Get through most infection by summer and of course vaccinations, then winter for flu and other.

Feels possible atm

stepupandbecounted · 11/08/2021 15:38

I agree the steady trickle of cases is precisely what they were hoping to achieve with the bulk of cases being over the summer - we can continue like this now until we get to herd immunity or reach a point where the virus runs out of hosts. We are in a much stronger position than last year, I am hopeful that the winter will be okay - steady stream of cases, hospitalisations steady. Big intervention with flu vaccine to prevent more illness and we could be okay.

This is nothing like the 200,000 cases predicted. It is around 21,000 cases a day - which is fine. I don't expect the 16th of August to change very much in terms of numbers. People that test positive will still isolate.
