Normal life is back

I don't know about you but life where I am is pretty much back to normal, masks in shops falling rapidly. People having a good time. Covid barely gets mentioned now. (and yes I know people are still catching it and a tiny proportion will die)

It feels great. So what happened to the 200,000 cases a day doom scenario peddlers on here? They seem rather quiet.......

@sleepwouldbenice

Hmmm. I wonder why people don't listen to you!

jumpbounce · 10/08/2021 22:26

Not back to normal by a long shot for those with CEV children. Infact it is now probably the worst the situation has been during the whole pandemic and to throw salt in the wounds we have now had medical appointments cancelled yet again due to pressure on the hospital with rising numbers of covid patients.

NannyAndJohn · 10/08/2021 23:38

I think this pretty much sums up where we are at the moment:

Sound normal to you?

toffeeandcream · 10/08/2021 23:44

I was thinking earlier how covid is barely getting mentioned- eg you go on a news website or the news comes on tv/radio and there are now dozens of other stories taking precedence over corona-related stuff.

Even on here, active talk used to be full of covid threads now there are often zero appearing.

Mainly because the right-wing media are in lock-step with the government and hence they don't want Joe Public to know that Covid is still here and cases are still sky high.
DanielTigersMummy21 · 10/08/2021 23:59

The situation with my daughter's nursery is still nowhere near normal. Masks at drop off, parents not allowed inside the building. It's really getting to me that I have to hand her over outside and cannot observe her inside to see if she is happy.

JoborPlay · 11/08/2021 00:42

Yes. Back to normal here to. I'm sad. My MH and stress levels were so much better in lockdown. I need to learn to say no more.

Obviously I think overall things being back to normal is a great thing. Just not for me personally.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/08/2021 00:53

I’m in Scotland where masks are apparently mandated until next spring. So not at all normal. Unless you are in a nightclub. Covid does not enjoy dancing.

milkyaqua · 11/08/2021 01:23

You are apparently either a scaremonger or someone who thinks they have high intelligence by using the phrase a variant apparently .nothing inbetween
Wonder how many of the latter you'll see in ICU...

Er, poster is an ICU doctor.

Also, I read and reread ICUDoc's post (having seen their useful posts before this, and being stunned at your response) and could not find the phrase 'a variant apparently' or indeed the word 'variant'. Not that the rest of your post makes any sense, anyway.

I was just about to say the same thing. I think sleepwouldbenice is an apt user name, they obviously are lacking in sleep and are imagining things!

I went down south last week, everyone in the ‘hotel wore masks including all the staff.
I’m living my life but still a little cautiously, wearing a mask in some situations. Just because Covid isn’t affecting you personally doesn’t mean it’s over.

Back up north I’d still say mask wearing is high where I go. The bus I caught the other day everyone had a mask on. I’d say in shops more with masks on that not.

Greater Manchester has been hit hard by Covid and it’s restrictions last year we were basically in lockdown from November thanks to tiers and restrictions even prior to that so maybe some people are being more cautious. We really don’t want that again!

I work in a hospital we still have Covid coming through the doors daily, still a good steady number on wards and in critical care. The hospitals in GM are all reporting record attendances in A&E ( other things not Covid) so it’s in our best interests to keep Covid admissions down. Cases are increasing again too. May be later and slower than predicted ( all good) but still happening.

More of our fully vaccinated staff have recently starting coming down with Covid, some fine after a week but some really feeling it for a good couple of weeks. So no it’s not just a mumsnet anecdote it’s happening. I’m fully vaccinated and all my friends and family are so I’m hoping that helps us.

So yes life is feeling more normal for some, vaccine is doing amazing but it’s Covid is not over just yet.

Lots of people still wearing masks where I live and I'd rather do that too as cases are rising here. I still don't want Covid thanks, nothing has changed there just because the government says people who are no longer bothered can come into my personal space.

MrsJackWhicher · 11/08/2021 04:49

Delighted the other day when I was introduced to someone and he shook my hand!
And an acquaintance saying hello kissed me on the cheek.

Normal human interaction at last.

zoemum2006 · 11/08/2021 04:59

146 people died of covid yesterday but the government have decided that it is all over so…..

kowari · 11/08/2021 06:11

No, it's deaths reported yesterday and with covid.
HighHighHopes · 11/08/2021 06:46

Yep...deaths WITH Covid not purely BECAUSE OF.

An important distinction.

Sparklingbrook · 11/08/2021 06:55

I have definitely noticed a decrease in doom mongering told you so types on here which has been nice. Grin
I also suspect much name changing too though.

Where I am, I am still mask wearing all day for work and for shopping. The pingdemic is causing lots of problems for local businesses still. It's not normal but it's a lot more normal than it has been, the teenager has a social life again.

MrsTophamHat · 11/08/2021 07:24

Lots of masks where I am in Cumbria as well as trolley sanitising etc but apart from that people seem to be behaving normally.

I'm excited to be planning more or less normal teaching for September too, as I was worried that things would take a turn for the worse and bubbles would have to stay.

rookiemere · 11/08/2021 07:40

@BogRollBOGOF I'm so delighted that Scottish parkruns are starting again on Saturday. We have a trip planned but are making a detour to fit parkrun in en route. That to me feels finally like a bit of normality, but I'm not taking anything for granted.

Just because we want the pandemic to be over, doesn't mean it finally is - and I say that as someone who has been on the less cautious side of the fence. I worry that lockdown will be the government's modus operandi every time hospitals get full, which let's face it they used to do most winters due to flu.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 11/08/2021 07:51

SAGE recently reported that daily contacts are a quarter of pre pandemic levels, and lower than last summer (during EOTHO). So people still being cautious - certainly where I am, most people still in masks in shops and supermarkets.

User135644 · 11/08/2021 07:52

Like last year July/August is a good time to make the most of the summer through all this.

Let's see where we are after the kids go back.

MarshaBradyo · 11/08/2021 07:53

We do still have many in masks but it’s mandated on transport

Not legally anymore and small drop in numbers but even though not totally normal if you take this into account it definitely feels better overall

Covidforever · 11/08/2021 07:55

@HighHighHopes

Yep...deaths WITH Covid not purely BECAUSE OF.

Thats used to play down these deaths, by deniers, but apparently over 90% of reported deaths are by CV... not with it (PHE)

Look at the 7 day avg of infections and deaths, its summer & we are out doors.

Sure vaccines are a god send and things have, to a large extent, returned to normal, which is lovely to see but CV ain't gone away, nor have the pressures on the NHS either.

User135644 · 11/08/2021 08:16

If you think this is normal, or more normal, then make the most of it because winter hits and we have more restrictions again.

liveforsummer · 11/08/2021 08:23

Just lost a lot of money - money I'd chosen to spend over doing some things in the house - as due to go on holiday at the weekend but most of the group have just tested positive. All activities and accommodation pre booked and paid for, because you have to pre book everything now. I'm in Scotland too so masks are still a thing. Not feeling too normal to me.
