Normal life is back

I don't know about you but life where I am is pretty much back to normal, masks in shops falling rapidly. People having a good time. Covid barely gets mentioned now. (and yes I know people are still catching it and a tiny proportion will die)

It feels great. So what happened to the 200,000 cases a day doom scenario peddlers on here? They seem rather quiet.......

People working from home are choosing to do so now as a lifestyle choice, it is not about covid.

Scottish government are still telling people to work from home. Given by the spaces in my local station car park, lots are taking that advice. I've always worked from home even pre-Covid, but DH is currently going in to the office once a week. No plans to increase that until 2022.

UserStillatLarge · 13/08/2021 08:48

That might be true of some people, but my company is still *choosing" to follow Covid guidelines, which means they can only get limited people back in the office, so you are not allowed in unless your job can't be done from home.
I want to go back to the office! WFH is very much not a lifestyle choice and I have hated every minute of it. I do wish people would not make stereotypical sweeping statements assuming that millions of people are all of the same mindset.

stepupandbecounted · 13/08/2021 08:53

I am not talking about Scotland though! Scotland are operating a very different operation, one hell bent on giving Nicola as much control as possible.

I am sorry you can't go back due to space user but we have all been back in the office since May. It is busy again in London, trains are packed again. Every area is different, but alot of WFH is now being done out of choice.

rookiemere · 13/08/2021 08:54

I'm in Scotland and have started going in 1 day a week - you're allowed to book a seat for various reasons, but the default is still very much wfh.
I don't think it's fair to label wanting to wfh atm a lifestyle choice. I am very much of the opinion that we need to get on with things, but putting our fingers in our ears and shouting "La La La" doesn't make covid go away.

Infection rates are still high, even double vaccinated people can still catch it and have unpleasant side effects and potentially long Covid. It makes sense that if you're happy and productive working from home, you'd stay there until numbers go down again.

I prefer being in the office, so I'll take my chances, but it's wrong to castigate people for making perfectly sensible risk based decisions.

lannistunut · 13/08/2021 09:06

Regarding trains being 'packed', the official figures show public transport use is far lower than pre-pandemic.

Of course many businesses will continue to prefer WFH. There is a risk for a business of having staff needing to isolate if they test positive for covid, there is a risk to businesses of passing covid to key clients, there is a risk to businesses of having staff off on full pay with longer term covid symptoms. These must be weighed against other benefits of working back in the office.

There are huge financial benefits to many businesses of not needing large central offices spaces.

WFH is not a lifestyle choice, it is a change of working culture. Some people and some businesses stay doing things the way they always did, but some are happy to look at changing the way they do things. It has always been this way.

I'm also wondering where all the posters who claimed we would never get our freedom back have disappeared to Hmm

stepupandbecounted · 13/08/2021 09:11

There are less carriages, and we use the London route, and it is standing room only. The stats I assume cover the whole country so it may be different elsewhere.

We now have conferences booked, work dinners are back on and meetings face to face. I find it strange that Scotland are so behind with the return to normal, given their infection rate and vaccination progress, it is purely political in my view.

stepupandbecounted · 13/08/2021 09:12

ethel fading for now thankfully. The mere slight uptick of cases in the autumn and I am sure they will back banging the drums of doom and telling us we are all going to hell in a handcart Grin

Scotland are 'behind' because Johnson is a reckless twat
MarshaBradyo · 13/08/2021 09:55

The strategy in England is to use summer for infections.

I don’t think it’s reckless - but I prefer to listen to Chris Whitty explain why it’s what we’re doing

HelloMissus · 13/08/2021 09:58

Yes trains and tubes are busy because there’s a reduced service.
The figures will still show fewer passengers of course.

WFH will be an interesting one, with companies and staff alike feeling their way.
If a business can ditch the expense of rent then that’s a massive bonus especially in London.
A lot still have their office space but have negotiated reduced rents (I know lawyers who spent months doing this work at the start of lockdown 1) but when that runs out, will they want everyone back? Be interesting to find out.

lannistunut · 13/08/2021 09:59

'strategy' Hmm

MarshaBradyo · 13/08/2021 10:00

@lannistunut

'strategy' Hmm
Why the Hmm face?

Have you listened to Chris Whitty at all or just going by bias

HelloMissus · 13/08/2021 10:02

Funny how people were creaming their knickers over Whitty until recently.
Ditto Ferguson.
Now they’re saying it’s the right way forward they know less than Tom Daley.

MarshaBradyo · 13/08/2021 10:04

Some people are really mired in stuck thinking.

Obviously it’s influenced by politics and nationalism in some cases.

But it’s becoming dull now.

Everyone went on and on about the unethical U.K. experience etc, posters leapt on it all. Some are still saying it even though their predicted carnage hasn’t happened.

If you disagree with Chris Whitty say why rather than just the usual.

Ha yes Hello

So many posters ready to get their superior application in.

They are probably hiding in their toilet roll forts.

Ah no critique. Just Hmm faces.

Pity.

I think they are still around, probably name changed and banging on about something else.

Although I did laugh at this
lannistunut · 13/08/2021 10:26

Regarding absence of 'critique', that is the pot calling the kettle black.

MarshaBradyo · 13/08/2021 10:29

Why?

I have already said I agree with Chris Whitty what more do you want to hear?
