Good news. As some of us predicted, the JCVI has changed its mind.
This is behind a paywall, but I read the whole article on Twitter ( which I can't seem to paste here).

Anyway, the headline is self-explanatory.

@Howshouldibehave

Good that they’ll all be immune before school starts back then

Who will all be immune before term starts?

Wouldyoucouldyou’s DD’s class mates - apparently the positive rates among them are rising ‘exponentially’.
bumbleymummy · 06/08/2021 23:55

@leafyygreens

Clearly we don’t need To vaccinate 16/17 year olds to reduce cases. We haven’t even finished double vaccinating the adult population yet and cases are falling, even though a single dose isn’t as protective against delta.

That's an incredibly strong, definitive statement to make without any evidence or appropriate training @bumbleymummy

The majority of epidemiologists are advising caution regarding transmission rates, it isn't possible to know currently whether vaccinate of younger age groups would be required to keep transmission at manageable levels

Have you not seen the case numbers dropping over the last few weeks? Is that not evidence of case numbers dropping without 16-17 yr olds being vaccinated. And we haven’t even finished double vaccinating adults yet - and we know that a single dose isn’t as protective against delta. I can post links to PHE and ONS for case numbers abc vaccination levels if you like - but I assumed most people know where to find that information now. It’s not exactly secret.

“ they will be harmed by the impacts of uncontrolled coronavirus and substantial levels of illness and isolation required in the adult population.”

So you think there’s still a risk of ‘uncontrolled’ coronavirus amongst adults after the majority have been vaccinated and over 93% have antibodies from either vaccination or previous infection (ONS)?

SophieGiroux · 07/08/2021 00:29

The worry is that the vaccine manufacturers still do not have any liability for vaccine damage to any patient. Imagine if your child is damaged, don't you think it's strange that they are still not accepting liability?! Yes the government say they will pay damages but it's only a max of £120k, that's hardly going to sustain a possibly disabled child for life.

How many cases have there been so far? In the countries already giving the vaccine to the under 18s?

Seems they disagree with JVT

This roll out to vulnerable teens is shambolic.

Non vaccinating jeaporadise the autumn term and will create another disrupted academic year.
The 3rd year of covid crap aftermath on our kids.

HSHorror · 07/08/2021 10:29

3As
Completely agree.
Imo if the mrha have said it's ok at minimum it shpuld be available privately for 12+.

  • if there truly is the supply.
Also imo the never vaxxing kids obviously affects teachers. But also anyone providing services mainly to kids- clubs, soft plays, scouts and guides etc. Will the volunteers not bother as some are older. It's one thing zoom or masks and isolations. Another to think the guide may have a covid positive person at home or in their class.
lonelyplanet · 07/08/2021 11:12

Will walk in vaccination centres in England vaccinate a 16 year old yet, or do we need to wait?

MareofBeasttown · 07/08/2021 11:16

@lonelyplanet I have heard of one in London that is doing them but haven't been able to confirm. I may go up there today with 17 yr old DS. The weather is terrible though!

OP posts:
Eaumyword · 07/08/2021 11:20

Ooh I've been looking too! We're East Mids and the advice is to wait. The vaccination centres appear just to be inviting over 18's.
I'd love it if anyone could tell me differently!
16yr old DS is raring to go and it would be fab to do it around his working shifts, just in case he feels dodgy afterwards.

lonelyplanet · 07/08/2021 12:46

Thank you MareofBeasttown, let us know if you have any luck.

AlexaShutUp · 07/08/2021 12:52

I'm very pleased about this change in approach. 16yo dd is very eager to have the vaccine and will go as soon as she gets the chance.

3asAbird · 07/08/2021 13:52

Look how the vaccinating teenagers compares to other countries.
The MHRA approved pfizer as safe for 12 to 15 year old 2months ago!

Seems Dingwall has been kicked off jcvi and was pursuing a herd immunity and great Barrington declaration all along .
Maybe us for them has also infiltrated.
Schools will be risker places this sept for students and staff because of this man and government policy.
A small may get very ill or long covid.
But it school infections are high then thats hundred of kids lives and health ruined!

Update for Londoners: DS, 17, just got his jab at the Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre in Chiswick. V long way for me but well worth it. No pre-booking, just walk in. I didnt have a GP invite. The lady said they will be offering jabs next week on Fridays and Saturdays to 16 and 17 yr olds . She also said they have tons of Pfizer which they may have to throw away. So they would love to put it in arms.

The JCVI are only recommending it because those who dissented have been booted off the panel in order to give the opinion their superiors asked for.

That's how 'science' works nowadays. (Don't criticise the experts, you are not a scientist)

llorelei · 07/08/2021 17:36

@loulouljh

It was originally not recommended due to concerns about severe heart issues as a result. What has changed?
The dissenting members of JCVI (four panellists) were replaced.
Piggywaspushed · 07/08/2021 17:41

At least one of those is a sociologist. They have valuable insights into health and medical ethics etc but no one woukd describe a sociologist as a 'scientist' in the way we ate imagining.

MarshaBradyo · 07/08/2021 17:41

It’s not just that, if it is that re members

Confidence level has changed due to timely review of data

Who were the members who were removed from the JCVI?
noblegiraffe · 07/08/2021 17:51

At least one of those is a sociologist

Who says he was not booted off the JCVI in order to get a different answer as to whether to vaccinate.

"This updated advice means we can be confident that young people will be afforded around 80% protection against hospitalisation, following receipt of their first dose. It is expected that protection will probably be even higher as younger people respond better to vaccines and some will have already had the COVID-19 infection, meaning they will have an even better response to a first dose.

The JCVI has looked at the very latest safety data from the UK and other countries as we know that some serious side effects have been reported in this younger age group. This includes myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the membrane around the heart). These are extremely rare and usually occur within a few days of the second dose, typically more in young men.

Data from the US suggests that, in males aged 12 to 17 years, 9.8 cases of myocarditis were reported per million first doses given. This rises to 67 per million after the second dose. Most people recovered quickly.

....

After carefully considering the latest data, we advise that healthy 16 to 17 year olds are offered a first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Advice on when to offer the second vaccine dose will come later.

While COVID-19 is typically mild or asymptomatic in most young people, it can be very unpleasant for some and for this particular age group, we expect one dose of the vaccine to provide good protection against severe illness and hospitalisation."

Where did your other post go?

noblegiraffe · 07/08/2021 20:46

Their thread? Taken down because it looked like spammy disinformation I think.

MareofBeasttown · 08/08/2021 12:30

Again for Londoners, over 16 jabs in Greenwich Park from 11 am to 6 pm.

Can't seem to get one for son yet - GP has sent text saying "please don't ring us we'll let you know" and NHS site Computer Says No.
No walk-ins nearby as far as I know (North Yorkshire).

I wonder if his exit will pave the way for allowing all children over 12 to have the vaccine.

Dingwall? Should be removed from any post he occupies for being a lying Covid denier. He makes Boris look like the bocca della verita' made human. Anti Vax Anti mask Long Covid denier Famously said (probably to the fist pumping salivating glee of the anti-this/that/the other MNers) that Covid simply brought forward by a few weeks the deaths of people who were going to die anyway. He is scum
