Dad is in hospital

TyotyaKlava · 31/07/2021 21:23

My dad has been admitted to hospital with COVID this morning. Oxygen sats 85%, high temperature. He’s unvaxed (into all sort of conspiracy theories) but don’t get me started on that! He’s had COVID for more than a week now, how likely is it going to get worse? He’s 72 but no serious chronic illnesses, not obese.
Him and my mum live in a different country and I’m so worried. If he’s to get worse, when is it likely to happen?

I'm sorry to hear that. Bumping.

It seems to take a turn for the worse day 7-10.

That said hospitals know so much more about treatment now.

Ivermectin seems promising.

Must be very hard for you being so far away.

Lelivre · 31/07/2021 21:40

He is in the right place. He needs treating. Perhaps he will have steroids antibiotics and oxygen. You need to stay calm and wait a few days. He may feel worse before he feels better. We went through something similar and now all is good. It is very stressful. Take care and try not to think too much about what might be happening/could happen. There is nothing you can do. Try to remember: There is a great deal more knowledge expertise and treatments now than when this all started. That’s good there are no underlying issues. You have to hold steady and wait for news and don’t let your mind run riot. Take care.

Really sorry to hear that OP, wishing him a speedy recovery Flowers He's in the right place and that's really good he got admitted before it became more serious

@stayathomegardener

there is no robust evidence ivermectin is useful in treating COVID, I think it's really important not to promote unfounded treatments on SM, especially to someone who's worried about a loved one

if, and that's a big if, ivermectin does show any evidence of efficacy, it will be in the very early stages of infection due to it's proposed mechanism of action, not as a hospital treatment. This is what Uni of Oxford and others are currently testing.

TyotyaKlava · 31/07/2021 21:55

Thanks for your kind messages everyone. He’s been on dexametazon since the start and we all thought he was getting better two days ago but COVID is quite unpredictable. I really hope he gets better

I’m sorry, do hope he recovers

riveted1 · 31/07/2021 22:01

That's good they've got him on dexa and hopefully with hospital care now too he'll get the extra support he needs.

Where do your parents live @TyotyaKlava? x

stayathomegardener · 31/07/2021 22:17

@riveted1 as a Covid survivor of March 2020 I would take any information available at that time or indeed now.

I said ivermectin "seems" promising, there are trials beyond Oxford and indeed it's clinically playing a part in long Covid too months down the line so potentially that's on offer.

Hope your Dad pulls through @TyotyaKlava

Porcupineintherough · 31/07/2021 22:21

In the very short term OP he'll either respond to the treatment he is being given, or he'll worsen and need something like CPAP, intubation or kidney dialysis (depending on how the disease progresses for him). You should know which way he's going within a few days. In the slightly less short term he may develop additional complications due to blood clotting issues, myocarditis etc but hospitals know to look out for this now, so should hopefully intervene early.

The misinformation surrounding ivermectin has caused so much unnecessary anguish to relatives of COVID patients which is why I replied. At a time which is already so stressful, people are being convinced that a lifesaving treatment is being withheld from their loved one.

This is a thread from someone worried about their dad who has been hospitalised, and I would hate for them or anyone else to be caused unnecessary stress that their parent is not getting the best care or being denied something that could help them.

TyotyaKlava · 31/07/2021 22:37

@riveted1
My parents live in Kazakhstan, healthcare isn’t great there, not like in the UK. Medical staff is corrupt. My sisters would be able to help mum in terms of caring for dad but it’s just awful that I’m here unable to help.

Oh gosh I'm sorry they're so far away. That's really good your sisters are there too so can help out your mum with caring for him, and must be a huge relief but I completely understand how it must feel to not be able to be there yourself Flowers

Keeping you and your family in my thoughts x

Toddlerteaplease · 31/07/2021 22:45

@riveted1 I agree, this is the second thread I've read this week where posters are suggesting that the OP asks for their relative to have it.

Katya213 · 31/07/2021 22:50

Hope he gets better soon op.x

TheVanguardSix · 31/07/2021 22:51

Dexa was the turning point for my DH, who nearly died, OP. He was in a terrible way. By day 7 he was on death's door, so the fact that your dad isn't deteriorating is encouraging. A nasal canula will help, but 85% sats isn't too bad a reading, tbh. As long as it remains stable. DH's sates were 58%, which was devastating. I promise, I'm not playing covid Top Trumps, but I feel hopeful for your dad. The fact that he's not obese is great! To be honest, we tend to downplay obesity (because many non-obese people have been hospitalised with covid), but obesity plays a significant role when it comes to 'worst case scenario' covid simply because obesity plays havoc with lung function. I don't know if 'proning' is still protocol but when DH was in hospital last January, proning was believed to help increase oxygen. They could not prone my husband. He is very obese and they simply couldn't do it. So with your dad, they'll be able to prone him, which is also encouraging.
Sending you positive vibes and healthy wishes. I really hope he improves now that he is in hospital.

Queenie6655 · 31/07/2021 22:55

Sending you and your family lots of good wishes

So so scary

This was my family 8 months ago

TyotyaKlava · 31/07/2021 23:03

Thanks everyone for your wishes. Sorry to hear you had hard times with your DH being so poorly with COVID @TheVanguardSix, I’m glad that the treatments helped. And thanks for all the encouraging replies everyone, I’m keeping my fingers crossed x

VaccineAnxiety · 02/08/2021 14:04

Hope your dad is ok? Thinking of you

TyotyaKlava · 02/08/2021 14:36

Hi all, my dad is still in hospital. He is still in the same condition but it is not worse so it is a plus.
His lung infection is 60% and he’s struggling to breathe so it doesn’t look too positive but at least he’s not on ventilation.
He is also refusing a treatment with remdesivir which made while family quite frustrated but there is only so much we can try persuading him.

Oneearringlost · 02/08/2021 14:42

Oh, OP, I'm thinking of you. Gosh, it's frightening, I just hope the intensivists are good , as they are here, but I heard what you said about health care in Kazakhstan.

X

TyotyaKlava · 02/08/2021 14:50

Thanks for your concerns everyone.
To make things worse, my mum is saying that she isn’t answering his phone for the last few hours after texting her that he is struggling to breathe. She can’t contact doctors as they are too busy to answer phone calls so she is on the knife edge. So am I 😭
