Latest SAGE document 'realistic possibility' Sars-cov2 will mutate to MERS fatality rate

Well I read this last night at 2am and then could not sleep at all. Was not expecting anything like this and shocked this has been allowed to be viewed by the public. Seems like something is very wrong for this to be allowed to be seen and especially with what is happening in the US. I had read about mareks disease maybe sonething similar is happening now? Or maybe like I always thought this virus came as a result of gof rsearch from the lab in wuhan and maybe the virus is just mutating in this direction because of that (increased virulence) in comparison to a natural virus . Well not sure what to do now

It's running through what would happen if that scenario did happen, not saying it's likely to.

Likewise, the UK Government has plans in place should a foreign power launch a nuclear missile at us. Doesn't mean you should worry about it happening.

Bordois · 31/07/2021 09:09

This is being discussed on the data thread and is not as bad as it might sound (said in the full knowledge that this will likely be ignored in favour of doomsday scenarios)

piscis · 31/07/2021 09:11

They are scenarios.
Scenario 4 is that the virus becomes less severe and would be like many other coronaviruses.

namechange30455 · 31/07/2021 09:12

They're saying there's a realistic possibility of a worse variant emerging. Which there is. If it does, it would most likely be only slightly worse than the existing ones.

They're not saying that there's a realistic possibility of that worse new variant having a fatality rate as high as MERS!

That doesn’t give me much assurance when the government had a plan on paper for dealing with a global pandemic and failed to actually put the details in place.

They were meant to have a plan for a pandemic too……

GiveMeNovocain · 31/07/2021 09:19

They did have a plan for a pandemic. It focussed on protecting the vulnerable. They chose to lockdown instead

Bluntness100 · 31/07/2021 09:19

Of course all these things are possible and it’s excellent they are looking at the possibilities and coming up with mitigating strategies.

They did, as did the WHO and every developed country.

The plan that had been in place for years was to flatten the curve.

The nuclear missile plans in place probably include lots of ‘important people’ scurrying off to underground nuclear bunkers leaving the common folk to evaporate Wink

OliveTree75 · 31/07/2021 09:29

That's not what it says.

I think people are referring to the 2016 non existent one, not the one scribbled on the back of Boris's condom packet on his way to the first presser.
Maskless · 31/07/2021 09:42

The WHO had a plan for a pandemic in place for years before covid. It was based on a worse disease than covid, actually.

Sweden followed it.

The UK govt tossed it out the window and overreacted massively to a virus less bad than the one WHO planned for and as a result ended up inflicting considerable and unnecesary damage upon the country and invividuals.

nordica · 31/07/2021 10:13

Realistic possibility in this context doesn't mean what it sounds like. They need to look into different scenarios but it's not a prediction of what is likely to happen.

vera99 · 31/07/2021 10:16

If that scenario came even half true then it would be a complete and utter breakdown of society and civilisation. Let's hope it doesn't. The fact that they have considered even such a scenario though gives me pause for thought.

TheGenealogist · 31/07/2021 10:17

Why are you reading worst case scenario "studies" at 2am when you're clearly anxious about Covid?

foxandbee · 31/07/2021 10:27

Interesting that the first post OP makes (or name changes to make) has such a scaremongering title.

Exactly!

They have Ebola plans, apparently. They're probably similar to the nuclear plans. Hmm

All governments will have a plan in place (or at least should have) for absolutely everything.

Just like all businesses and organisations should have a plan in place for everything.

Do you work? Have you ever read your workplaces risk assessment?

I once was given the task of proofreading my old workplaces updated risk assessment. It was quite alarming the things they had to think about.

Not sure what happened to the risk assessment after I checked it. Probably got shoved back wherever it was stored before.

sashagabadon · 31/07/2021 10:48

The Olympics is on! Watch that instead

SpringRainbow · 31/07/2021 10:50

For the record, nothing noteworthy ever happened during the time I worked there.

The risk assessment never had to be actioned.

Just like most government plans will never come into action in our lifetime.

It’s quite unfortunate that we are alive to see the pandemic. I know many people who never did.

ArianaG · 31/07/2021 14:08

This terrified me too, any reassurance welcome...
