Well I read this last night at 2am and then could not sleep at all. Was not expecting anything like this and shocked this has been allowed to be viewed by the public. Seems like something is very wrong for this to be allowed to be seen and especially with what is happening in the US. I had read about mareks disease maybe sonething similar is happening now? Or maybe like I always thought this virus came as a result of gof rsearch from the lab in wuhan and maybe the virus is just mutating in this direction because of that (increased virulence) in comparison to a natural virus . Well not sure what to do now

I thought there was a prediction by WHO of a pandemic X that would be far more lethal to life than COVID-19? It hasn't yet happened - go figure.

To be honest, they have been warning of a pandemic for years. They however assumed it would be a flu virus, so all/ most pandemic plans were made to control a flu virus.

This is why there was such a huge emphasis at the beginning for washing your hands. However, although hand washing helps to some degree with Covid, ventilation is more important.

I hope the WHO are not in charge of any other pandemic response as for some reason they acted in ways that even a child would think made no sense and couldnt of done a worse job if they had tried. Same for SAGE too

So what should WHO and SAGE have done? I agree mistakes have been made, but covid is a novel and unpredictable virus.
Dreamstate · 01/08/2021 17:14

They should stop making stupid predictions that don't come true and know when to shut up.

The WHO were frankly pathetic at beginning and player politics to keep China happy, rather than doing their job.

Sage is full of liars and cheaters (whitty Vallance liars , fergussen cheaters.)

They need to shut up, and before.anyone has a go plenty of sage behaviourists keep making predictions

Decades ago I used to visit an office that was set up in an NHS leprosy unit.
I don't think the government is/was seriously expecting an outbreak of leprosy, but there are preparations for all sorts of contingencies, which we generally don't know about or think about.

The problem is that it would take enormous resources to have facilities ready to deal with thousands of cases affected by every possible harm: biological/chemical/explosion with a week or two's notice, far less under an hour's notice.

The problem is that it would take enormous resources to have facilities ready to deal with thousands of cases affected by every possible harm: biological/chemical/explosion with a week or two's notice, far less under an hour's notice. I was aware of the COVID-19 threat before Christmas (it was already being reported in the newspapers albeit low-level), so presumably so should the Govt. have been. So they had three months preparation time but seemed not to do anything usefully prevenative until a few days before we eventually went into lockdown.

I still blame them for allowing everyone to go off on their skiing trips over that February half-term even though by that point the stirrings of the clinical chaos to come were already starting to emerge in parts of Italy!

ClaudiaMay · 03/08/2021 08:25

Yes - they must have known more about what was happening and much earlier.
I distinctly remember talking to my friend - a children's A&E nurse just before February half term 2020 - she told me they'd had a crazy week and lots of cases of children with breathing problems...

95% of all statistics are pointless.

DottyHarmer · 03/08/2021 08:46

Interestingly I was watching an old Richard E Grant visits luxury hotels programme from a few years ago in Hong Kong, and it was just after the SARS (bird flu?) epidemic. They were talking in very sombre tones about its effects on the economy, and people were all in masks.

We have forgotten all about this! I remember vaguely a few “we’re all doomed” newspaper headlines, but then it all petered out. If only covid had done the same Sad . But then again if the govt/NHS etc had been prepared and nothing had happened there would be inquests about the waste of money on a non-event.
