Thought some of you might find it interesting.

Dispiritingly interesting.

I simply don’t understand why we all have to kind of sweep under the carpet where the virus actually originated. There was a poster the other day saying it was the UK’s fault . Interesting articles in The Spectator recently talking about how so many institutions cannot bite the hand that feeds and strenuously quell any criticism of China, let alone any virus finger pointing.

IcedPurple · 28/07/2021 20:31

Thank you for this. Am bookmarking it to read when I have a bit more time as it looks like a demanding read - in a good way.

MercyBooth · 28/07/2021 20:45

It is. Took me a couple of hours.

Thanks for the link. I find it frightening that China is so powerful that they are beyond reproach or investigation. I fear we will never know the truth.

I agree. This has echos of appeasement prior to WW2.

This is exactly my fear, and appeasement never lasts, it goes one way or the other and both directions stink.

The end of the pandemic is truly out of the frying pan and into the fire and I'm watching Taiwan, HK and even Australia & NZ with a fair bit of apprehension. China's made some fairly frightening statements about all 4.

I've thought for much of the pandemic that we were both fighting a pandemic and also mentally preparing people for the psychological and physical restrictions of wartime. I'll be fucking delighted if I'm wrong, peacetime standard of living and foreign hols galore.

mizu · 28/07/2021 21:51

This looks interesting so thank you for posting.

Saidtoomuch · 28/07/2021 22:29

China just get away with so much - Muslim concentration camps, forced labour and organ harvesting from said camps, Hong Kong, wet markets, funding illegal poaching. Its appalling and the world just watches.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 28/07/2021 22:35

I find it scary that the government is encouraging China to have so much economic control of our country.

HelloDulling · 28/07/2021 22:37

I read this last week. Completely fascinating.

Being on the DRASTIC team must be very interesting and also incredibly frustrating.

Just read it. Thank OP.

It's pretty compelling isn't it. Particularly the sequencing of the horseshoe bat strain from the mineshaft that killed those miners and the three lab researchers hospitalised in 2019.

I have always found it hard to reconcile the coincidence of the location of the lab - one of only three globally specifically researching and working specifically with bat related corona virus - and the location of the first outbreak. I mean, what are the odds really?

But the article throws up so much more.

The western kowtowing to China really is quite sinister.

Tealightsandd · 29/07/2021 00:04

Wuhan is also home to China’s foremost coronavirus research laboratory, housing one of the world’s largest collections of bat samples and bat-virus strains. The Wuhan Institute of Virology’s lead coronavirus researcher, Shi Zhengli, was among the first to identify horseshoe bats as the natural reservoirs for SARS-CoV

An incredible coincidence if it isn't a lab leak.

Tealightsandd · 29/07/2021 00:09

There was a poster the other day saying it was the UK’s fault .

Well whoever that poster is, they're right about it being the UK's fault it got so bad in the UK. We didn't have to keep our borders wide open. We didn't have to let Covid in and we didn't have to let it freely spread. And we didn't have to rinse and repeat with the Delta strain. It doesn't matter what China might've said - denials, whatever. The actions spoke volumes. It was very obviously a serious and highly contagious disease. China told us by their actions even if they didn't by their words. It was the UK government's choice to ignore that.

DottyHarmer · 29/07/2021 08:30
Hmm

The above attitude is strange - this desperate effort to not mention China . It’s as if Oh, no, don’t blame Hitler, it was all Britain’s poor handling which caused wartime hardship. I don’t like WWII analogies as a rule, but in this case it seems appropriate.

Madhairday · 29/07/2021 09:47

Very interesting report OP, thanks for posting. I've always been somewhat sceptical as to the origins and this throws up a whole lot of 'coincidences' that just don't make sense as merely coincidences. The extent of appeasement and shoving under the carpet is very worrying.

Another analogy would be to blame the police, Security and ambulance crews for the Manchester Arena bomb attack.

Yes there were failings by all three in the lead up to and after the attack BUT the fault lies 100% with the suicide bomber. But we can't blame him because he is dead so let's blame the police, security and ambulance crews.

Similarly there were failings by the UK Gov in its response to the virus but the fault lies 100% with CCP Government of China and the Wuhan Institute of Virology. But we can't blame the Chinese Gov and the WIV because they have denied everything, blocked access to an investigation and removed all evidence- so let's blame the UK Gov instead.

LazyViper · 29/07/2021 09:56

Thank you for the link OP. Bookmarking to read later. I agree the simplest explanation for the first outbreak is a leak of lab-manipulated SARS samples. Anything else requires too much of a leap of faith.

1dayatatime · 29/07/2021 10:03

My key take from the paper and the best argument against the wet market theory is the following:

"in February 2020, a research paper coauthored by two Chinese scientists, based at separate Wuhan universities, appeared online as a preprint. It tackled a fundamental question: How did a novel bat coronavirus get to a major metropolis of 11 million people in central China, in the dead of winter when most bats were hibernating, and turn a market where bats weren’t sold into the epicenter of an outbreak?"

CrunchyCarrot · 29/07/2021 10:06

A very interesting and sobering read. What really jumps out at me is the sad fact that humanity isn't just researching viruses to learn more about them, it's looking to make some of them more deadly, clearly for biological warfare purposes. Terrifying and depressing.

DottyHarmer · 29/07/2021 10:07
