I was in Spain recently and was told that if you have had Covid you only get 1 dose of the vaccine

Lico · 27/07/2021 19:09

Many countries also have this policy.
Here is the breakdown by number of vaccines (having received two vaccines).

You can change the list of countries that are shown in the our world in data site, which is very useful.

Canada is above the UK on both one dose and two dose proportions, despite having a later start. The UK has really slowed down, despite starting well - and is also having more of a third wave than many of the other countries, but I'm sure that wave would be even worse if we hadn't started early. I think a lot of people are still assuming that UK is leading the pack and the government wants to keep this belief up there!!

Geamhradh · 27/07/2021 19:54

Excellent news!

Watapalava · 27/07/2021 20:02

Are children inc in other countries rates?

If so then their overall protection is lower

We may have only vaccinated xx amount but we’ve offered double vaccine to all groups at risk

Kids have rarely been ill never mind died so if countries rates inc kids then their populations may be less protected than ours

Lico · 27/07/2021 20:11

^^We may have only vaccinated xx amount but we’ve offered double vaccine to all groups at risk

So have other countries

Watapalava · 27/07/2021 20:27

Some countries haven’t had the big uptake in older groups tho and their high rates include children so actually less at risk are vaccinated overall

bellamountain · 27/07/2021 20:55

Spain are pretty hot when it comes to getting things done. We could learn a lot from then healthcare wise.

Hoppinggreen · 27/07/2021 21:29

I agree.
Many years ago in Spain my sil badly cut her finger so we went to a Pharmacy for advice who pointed us in the direction of a clinic. It was Saturday evening so A&E was the last place we wanted to be knowing how it would be here in England BUT we were seen in a nice modern clinic within 30 minutes, she was stitched and given antibiotics and a letter for her GP and payment was never mentioned. Another time DS had a cough and we were worried about his breathing, we went to the same place and they slotted into a paediatric clinic that was happening. Inhaler and antibiotics in 25 minutes from a Paediatrician.
We regularly go to that area and I am never worried about getting ill because I know we will receive excellent free care. Unfortunately Brexit may change that but DH and the DC still have EU nationality so they should be ok

Wellbythebloodyhell · 27/07/2021 21:36

The UK has really slowed down, despite starting well
This is purely down to a lower uptake in younger ages there's plenty of vaccine availability for those who want it

LaMagdalena · 27/07/2021 21:46

My daughter was born in Spain and had to have quite a lot of doctors appointments and help at first as a baby. She generally received good care, but I had endless trouble trying to sort out her documents. Her father apparently got a threatening phone call about it and a large bill, so I don't know what we did wrong there!

LaMagdalena · 27/07/2021 21:52

(Sorry I really deviated from the actual topic there)

Furloughlaylow · 27/07/2021 22:23

Yes yes but we have slowed down, rather dramatically, 39k 1st doses today.

The hows and whys are down to the govt to sort out and get them back up again.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 27/07/2021 22:29

@Hoppinggreen

I was in Spain recently and was told that if you have had Covid you only get 1 dose of the vaccine
I live in Spain and as far as I know, that's not true.
Wellbythebloodyhell · 27/07/2021 22:37

The hows and whys are down to the govt to sort out and get them back up again.

Hence the vaccine passports for nightclubs, festivals and possibly universities propaganda.

I think there's less urgency In the younger ones too, they know (or perceive) they're going to be ill for a few days after the vaccines so many do put it off due to social or work commitments, its the same with 2nd vaccines, those who were ill after the 1st are reluctant to book a 2nd if it coincides with a social commitment, busy work schedule or child care arrangements

beckyboops · 27/07/2021 22:41

I live in Spain snd yes that's correct if you have had Covid you only have one vaccine

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 27/07/2021 22:46

@beckyboops

I live in Spain snd yes that's correct if you have had Covid you only have one vaccine
I've just checked. Under 65s who have had covid get one dose, over 65s get both even if they have had covid.
Blessex · 27/07/2021 22:46

@beckyboops same as Netherlands. One vaccine if had Covid.

Unfashionable · 27/07/2021 22:47

That’s excellent news. ¡Vamos Espana!

We need other countries which we have close ties to to catch up, too, so we can all get back to normality.

Blessex · 27/07/2021 22:49

What I cannot get my head around with that data is that they are taking a % of a population that includes people we are not even offering the vaccine to. Eg kids. Otherwise we are a lot higher % than that. Other countries are offering it to kids.

EasterIssland · 27/07/2021 22:55

@OrangeBlossomsinthesun below 65s only get one dose. And this is causing big problems for those that want to travel as not every country recognises it.

Spain is vaccinating 12+ , for example the area im from.

Spanish are really pro vaccine so I’d imagine one of the hugest uptakes in Europe (similar to the British one)

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 27/07/2021 22:56

@beckyboops

I have family living in Spain, 3 of them have had Covid, all under 65, and they have had two jab doses. Wonder if it depends on the region?
EasterIssland · 27/07/2021 22:56

@Blessex

Spain is offering 12+.

Uk 18+

Because of this the overall uptake of everyone is higher in Spain than in the uk.

beckyboops · 27/07/2021 22:58

@MythicalBiologicalFennel if they went and had private tests as opposed to going through the social system that could be why. The members of my family. Myself included have had Covid and had one dose.

SCMocha · 27/07/2021 22:58

Yes not vaccinating children here does affect the stats; all the same, the percent of the population that is fully vaccinated is still an interesting and useful measure, as that will help determine how much spread there is, and countries such as Canada and others that are higher than the UK now might end up doing better with lower rates. The UK could perhaps have been in their position sooner because of our earlier start, if we hadn't let the delta variant take hold, and if we choose to vaccinate teenagers too.
