Anyone fancy a quick self isolating pity party?

So, we arrived on our UK holiday yesterday (staying in a family member’s holiday home a couple of hours away from our home). Me, DH and our DC. Haven’t had a proper break since Christmas 2019. I’m a public sector worker who hasn’t been working from home through the pandemic. I’m mentally and physically exhausted and just couldn’t wait to swim in the sea, go for country walks, have a few nice meals out and meet with some friends who live in the area. Carefree, sociable, summer fun!

I felt like I had a temperature/felt unwell last night, so took a LFT. Positive for covid. Rest of the family tested although no symptoms - DC all positive (DH so far not). Our holiday is for 10 days. We will need to self isolate for 10 days. I’m then supposed to be going back to work after we arrive home.

I just need to have a small pity party for myself and my family. We managed to get through 18 months of me in a public facing role and the kids in secondary school ie. covid soup…without getting covid…me & DH both double jabbed…and wouldn’t you know it, positive tests on the first day of our holiday!

Feel free to join if you have covid related woes that aren’t life threatening but are just a little bit shit…

How annoying op, not surprised you are upset. Hope you all get through with only minor symptoms.

ColettesEarrings · 23/07/2021 15:17

Where's the nearest drive through pcr centre to you? Confirm with a pcr for everyone and hope against hope that you're one of the lucky ones.

Mindymomo · 23/07/2021 15:36

So sorry for you all, but you all need to get PCR tests done to confirm.

Covidoutcast · 23/07/2021 15:41

Can you get PCR tests? Would you then be able to claim your AL back as you were sick? Perhaps you can get away at another time?
It is so annoying, the timing of it.
I tested positive and so we are isolating until next weekend - typically, I booked my DC into an expensive sports camp next week which they will not be able to attend and I cannot get a refund. The rest of the holiday they have bog standard school holiday club which I wouldn't have minded them missing.

frantic17 · 23/07/2021 15:55

Can I join? Positive lateral flow tests for me, my husband and son this morning, been for PCR tests and fully expect them to be positive. Had to cancel our holiday for this coming week and we are absolutely gutted. We all so need a break. I thought we had cracked it by getting to the end of term, my son in a large secondary school, and avoiding it until now. The timing couldn't be worse it's so shit isn't it!

frozendaisy · 23/07/2021 15:55

Oh that is just the worse OP I would actually cry. I assume you have.

Would love to join a pity party but just can't top this right now. (I'm packing away all laundered school uniform but hey woo go me not in the same league).

OrangeBananaFish · 23/07/2021 16:02

Oh no, how horrible for you. To get away yet have to isolate the whole time. Agree about getting PCR tests.

I tested positive on Monday and DS on Tuesday (he took a test after I was positive with the rest of the family). DH and 2DDs were negative. Yesterday they were still negative. Today DD1 started a headache so had another LFT and is now positive. DH and DD2 still neg. So now all our 10 days starts again I think. Then of course there is still DH and DD1 to get it at some point when the 10 days will start again.

This week has been OK as I have been working from home so have had something to do. But now it is the weekend and parkrun is back tomorrow. I have missed parkrun so much and now I can't go (obviously)

Hope you manage not to get through these days OK.

MayorGundersonsDogRufus · 23/07/2021 16:27

Yes, OP - check your company policy as many places let you claim back your PTO if you are ill. Might be a small consolation! So sorry though - I can imagine how disappointed you are!

I'm currently in isolation after moving back to the UK from Europe. Long story, but it too is shit.

murrunda · 23/07/2021 16:56

That sounds bad, sorry. I am going to see my parents in Finland in couple of weeks time. I don't want to get stuck to their house for ten days and possibly infecting them. Dh and dc had covid couple of weeks ago but I didn't get it. I hope my vaccines worked and fought it off rather than I didn't catch it at all.

Silkiecats · 23/07/2021 16:57

When I was in the public sector if you were sick on annual leave you could claim it back - I would just send an e-mail and let work know you have tested positive and hopefully can take leave another time. But sorry you are ill and that does sound rubbish.

My DD got close contact isolation for 10 days with an hour of school to go before summer holidays. Luckily back in March I thought I bet DS or DD will get close contact isolation just at the start of summer holidays and we will have to cancel our holiday as its in first 2 weeks. So I paid £35 to move it whilst there was still availability and good job I did. It'll probably be 2 weeks in rain now but at least its a break.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 23/07/2021 16:59

Can I join? Due to leave for a week's holiday today - me, DP and DC age 3 and 1. Uk holiday in a big cottage with my DM and also DSis and her family.

Last night littlest DC came down with a temperature and a nasty cough. Got a drive thru PCR test first thing this morning - hoping for a negative result to be through in time to travel tomorrow instead. (DCs between them have had quite a few pcrs for temperatures over the course of the pandemic, all negative)

This afternoon DCs nursery called to say that nursery bubble has burst (first time a bubble has burst at the nursery). Not only is it now more likely that DC will come back positive, the 10 day isolation period for him being a close contact covers our whole holiday SadSadSad

DC2 is hot and miserable, DC1 is already bored...

AvaCallanach · 23/07/2021 17:00

I got my positive test result on the morning of my 50th birthday last week...also double vaccinated.

fluffythedragonslayer · 23/07/2021 17:04

Ugh so sorry OP. I've just cancelled a short break due to being a close contact of someone who tested positive. I'm now convinced I'll get the virus and miss my main family holiday next week. I've worked bloody hard this year (education) and had no time off sick, soon as I hit summer hols I'm in iso. Fucking miserable.

fadingfast · 23/07/2021 17:05

Definitely worth trying to get your annual leave back, but you’ll probably need a confirmatory PCR test as evidence for it employer. I hope any symptoms are mild and short-lived for you Flowers

Karwomannghia · 23/07/2021 17:10

Happy to join. Dd tested positive on 3 LFTs (kept doing them hoping for a different result!!) day before leaving for holiday. Went for pcr then next day but cancelled the week in the cottage anyway. Still no results 5 days later but it’s obvious she has it.

BitchIAmFromChicago · 23/07/2021 17:15

Me! DS 4 out of isolation for a grand total of 3 days before his nursery bubble popped again. Not sure mentally how we’re going to get through it again and I’m thinking of sacking it all off to be honest.

MissingThePoint1 · 23/07/2021 17:24

I'm with you.. although we didn't quite make it on holiday, all packed and ready to go with 2 very excited little ones when my husbands eldest gets a positive LFT, next morning while waiting for the PCR results the 2 little ones both woke with raging temps!
We've all worked throughout this whole time, husband and son in retail me in a school and not even a single isolation. This holiday was rescheduled form last year and now we can't go!
So deflated, so desperately needed!

Amazed at how many people told me to ignore it and just go, no wonder we are where we are now!

Hope everyone is feeling ok and it's all mild cases!

Revengeofthepangolins · 23/07/2021 18:19

@OrangeBananaFish. Check the detailed isolation rules. I am really quite sure than you clock doesn’t start again for everyone (obviously for the infected it is 10 days from symptoms starting so they will have different dates). Worth reading to avoid over doing it

Karwomannghia · 23/07/2021 18:21

Yes the chart shows others only have to isolate for the first 10 days even if someone else gets it. Don’t quite understand as if you didn’t catch it from the first person you could still catch it from the second! 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyone fancy a quick self isolating pity party?
QueenofLouisiana · 23/07/2021 18:23

Can I join? I lost my Christmas holiday as my class bubble burst and I had to isolate for all but 3 days of it.
I didn’t even get through day one of the summer holiday before I was told to isolate again.
Like OP we’ve been in Covid soup for 16 months, only isolation periods have been in our holidays.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 23/07/2021 19:01

cant you rebook your holiday? given that this was has been ruined by having to isolate?

OrangeBananaFish · 23/07/2021 20:49

Thanks @Revengeofthepangolins and @Karwomannghia. Looks like I might only have to miss one week of parkrun and I have a 10K next Sunday. Of course I will see how the symptoms are. Still got a headache (which was my first symptom)

hotasharibo · 23/07/2021 21:15

I'll join.

It's DD birthday tomorrow and we've got a party booked for her and three friends to have pony rides/grooming then to McDonald's.

She's coughing and has a temperature so have had a test, isolating and party is cancelled.

Poor DD is gutted and I feel so sad for her, it might not even be COVID probably just a summer cold Sad

hotasharibo · 23/07/2021 21:17

@EllaSingsCole can you go home to isolate?

Assume if you are driving this would be ok. You might be able to claim on insurance as you've actually tested positive. At least then you won't loose the money although I appreciate that doesn't make up for loosing the time away

ImSoMagical · 23/07/2021 21:21

Bless you all! At least try to relax and hope your symptoms aren't too bad. I'll join you, after isolating as dd class had a positive case, meant to go back to school and dh had positive lateral flow. We all tested positive and now on my 15th day in the house 🥂 and supposed to be flying on hol in 6 days.. .
