Who else is sick of the hysteria?

There must be others? Time to tighthen ofcom rules, and clamp down on mis or sensationalist reporting in newspapers, online, TV, Radio etc.

Granny killers, look into their eyes, covidiots, hype over figures, over reporting, under reporting, selective reporting, anti vaxxers, selfish non maskers, etc etc is goes on and on.

There would probably be better compliance for rules etc if this hadnt become a circus of hystera and hyperbole.

@MercyBooth

Agree the media are recklessly completely stoking the fire in the way they report. Look at today - the misreporting of Chris Whitty's comments, with headlines like 'we'll be in lockdown again in weeks'. He didn't say that. It's totally irresponsible

Exactly. They need to be more careful The bloke has already been harangued more than once.

The media whip it up on both sides as usual.

It used to be: houses prices up! House prices down! Or red wine makes you live longer! Red wine kills you!

Now it’s concerns about Covid! Concerns about pesky isolation! Concerns about hospitalisations! Concerns about holidays! Concerns about kids with long Covid! Concerns about kids missing school because of internationally recommended isolation!

@unwuthering

I'm sick of the denial and the complacency.
Same
FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 17/07/2021 02:55

I completely agree with you OP.

I wonder what the drama llamas, curtain twitchers and serial grassers doing head counts from their window in their neighbours garden will do with themselves when it all ends

Shanghaisprize · 17/07/2021 03:20

I'm sick of the denial and the complacency.

Same. Also sick of people thinking all of us sheeple get their info from the 'MSM' and not reputable sources.

Of poorly educated people putting their logic and critical thinking skills above some of the worlds top scientists and epidemiologists, the arrogance is ludicrous.

Each new variant has been more transmissible and more deadly, and that trend is likely to continue. It is not 'hysterical' to be concerned about future variants or mutations becoming more of a threat to us, and/ or becoming vaccine resistant.

Topseyt · 17/07/2021 03:25

I totally agree. Covid has been such a media feeding frenzy.

I don't watch the news that much anymore. It has had much the same banner headlines since February and March of last year. A lot of it is hysterical and sensationalist.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 17/07/2021 03:38

I think a distinction between with covid and of covid could be useful, although the numbers may be balanced out by other deaths/hospitalisations that are a by product of covid (it can have a nasty effect on organs, even for those that have had mild cases etc).
I'd also be interested to know of hospitalisations - number of single and double vaxed.
I also think measures such as proper ventilation in crowded places where people have little option but to be there (e.g. schools) would calm the hysteria a bit as less people would have covid.
Info around why we put countries with similar vax rates, but much lower cases are on amber list. What criteria are they using?
Oh and getting rid of this reckless PM and government might also help the hysteria as our death rates and economy would be in a much better state.

Justa47 · 17/07/2021 03:55

@Suranjeep

Disagree. You sound like an anti max anti vaccine person sick of being reminded of you selfish unscientific and harmful stupid views.

TheDuchessOfBeddington · 17/07/2021 03:55

@Largethighsbadeyes

I am worried at the moment, however...

If they really want us to get used to the idea of "living with covid" then they need to stop the daily reporting of cases.

We, the general public, can do fuck all about the number of cases.

People who don't care will continue to do as they are doing.

People who do will curtail their own freedoms and cause/exacerbate mental health problems for themselves and their children.

If we have to live with this and treat it like flu then get it off the news.

Just stop!

Exactly. Or if they do continue with daily reporting, also report deaths from cancer, suicide, heart attacks etc.
Backofbeyond50 · 17/07/2021 04:24

Funnily enough I am finding most of the hyperbole on here right now seems to be people deeming that they are locked up even there is.no lockdown at the time..
That every child's education and mental health has been ruined by lockdown/isolations.
Yes there are a few people who are very scared but surely this is a form of anxiety too. Yet they are ridiculed as doommongers. Yet anyone who tries to suggest the I can't take anymore being locked up when they are not just shield the vulnerable should show some perspective is shut down.
I never forget a thread when we were in tiers at the time and someone suggested that the shielding should stay at home temporarily (ie until there's a vaccine which at that time no-one knew) to avoid everyone else being locked up when they weren't at the time. Anyone who tried to put them right on the difference between tiers and shielding was accessed of being a Lockdown Lockdown was a necessary evil and no I didn't enjoy it .
Too much hypocrisy on here.

Wallpapering · 17/07/2021 04:33

Have only looked at news other than masks and kids back at school life pretty much fucked not long after lockdown so nothing changed reason why avoided news on what rules are.

Although with all the protests, marches, pubs, football matches I’m wondering what restrictions was supposed to do other than ensuring loss of small business and likes me out of work

Pixxie7 · 17/07/2021 05:16

I don’t see it as hysteria cases are rising, it’s not flu and a lot of young people are getting long Covid. If you don’t want to listen don’t but personally I like being kept informed.

Jenasaurus · 17/07/2021 05:30

I can see where you are coming from OP but to be honest I think the headlines are not causing the same panic or anxiety as before, we have got used to it all now. I imagine this was the same in the war when they had news of bombings and neighbours losing loved ones, it just becomes normal and you become desensitized to it all.

@farfallarocks

The nhs hasn’t coped for years. That’s the sad truth. The NHS killed my father in February through their total incompetence. Separately he caught Covid in hospital ( and was totally asymptotic), he died because they gave him the wrong medicine and he slowly bled to death. Guess what was on his death certificate?? Yup. Covid
So sorry for yout loss @farfallarocks. I agree totally -my mother and others I know had serious harm done to them by the sheer incompetence of the NHS -not due to ‘underfunding’ but just chaotic organisation and bureaucracy that resists any modernisation as it has been endowed with religious status by misty eyed nostalgics.
TerritorialPissings · 17/07/2021 07:18

@MercyBooth oh dear, are we not allowed to discuss it?!

DaisyDreaming · 17/07/2021 07:21

As a vulnerable person I find the stats helpful. Just like as cases are high I need to be more careful not to catch noro. When covid cases are lower I do higher risk things than when they are high as part of learning to live with it

ByTheSea · 17/07/2021 07:27

The sooner most people are vaccinated the better. Covid is not just about deaths though. Many of us are now "living with covid". I had it in March 2020, didn't require hospitalisation, and it has left me with several ongoing health issues, aka long covid as well as a new autoimmune disease. There are loads of us out here and it is worrying.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 17/07/2021 07:28

Just read a news article about the situation regarding France and it said:

"A senior government source said: “They are worried about the South African variant because they think it escapes the vaccine, although they don’t have evidence of that yet"

Weren't we all worried to death about this variant months ago and then it just turned out to be nothing to really worry about with the vaccine working fine against it? So why are they now saying that there is no evidence? This has got to be a political move surely?

From a news article 13th April:

"On 1 April 2021, Pfizer/BioNTech published data looking specifically at 800 people in the trial who were living in South Africa. Their analysis suggeststhe vaccine is 100% effective at preventing symptomatic Covid-19 caused by the Beta variant"

So either they lied the first time or are lying now.

So sorry for you and your dad. Flowers
DancesWithTortoises · 17/07/2021 07:55

So either they lied the first time or are lying now.

Of course they weren't. Look up the word "think" in the dictionary. It's possible to think something then be reassured that you were wrong. That's what research is for.

Remove your tin hat.

I wonder what the drama llamas, curtain twitchers and serial grassers doing head counts from their window in their neighbours garden will do with themselves when it all ends

It isn't going to end. That's the point.

DancesWithTortoises · 17/07/2021 07:59

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Yes, let's pretend it isn't happening. Those of us who have lost loved ones to COVID should just shut up and pretend it didn't happen.

DS is involved in research of this. I listen to what he says not random loons on MN or Twitter.

Keep your masks, protect the vulnerable and brave yourselves for restrictions in the autumn.

You do realise that you are just the same random loon as anybody else on MN or Twitter?

Not really the same. I'm better informed than many loons on this thread. It isn't hard to find the facts.

The clinically vulnerable also have mental health issues. It's a horrible time for all of us but I want to protect those most vulnerable and likely to die. It is worth the sacrifice to save lives and keep the NHS working.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 17/07/2021 08:14

Yes, let's pretend it isn't happening. Those of us who have lost loved ones to COVID should just shut up and pretend it didn't happen

I lost my mum to covid march 31st last year, so I'm well aware that it happened. I am, however sick and fucking tired of of the hysteria portrayed by the media and the running tally of deaths. I lost dad to cancer last November but my mum's death is viewed as more of a tragedy than his for some warped reason.

Polkadotties · 17/07/2021 08:15

Thousands die every year from flu and other viruses. The world keeps going though. Covid should be no different.

Usual2usual · 17/07/2021 08:22

Covid measures don’t stop other illnesses being treated, let rip Covid does

Bullshit

Explain that to my Mum who is in horrendus pain every day, pain that could be treated very easily with an operation that was scheduled for last March and still hasn't happened 'because Covid'. That isn't a result of 'letting it rip' (plus we are in Scotland where that isn't happening).

Or explain it to my DH who after a year of suffering with serious pain has had to rely on A&E to prescribe him strong painkillers and refer him for a scan because the GP will not see him, under any circumstances.

Covid measures have fucked up treatment for so many people.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/07/2021 08:24

Not really the same. I'm better informed than many loons on this thread. It isn't hard to find the facts.

And that's exactly what every single random loon on the internet is saying.
