If you have young adult children, what are they thinking about the vaccine?

Just reading that uptake among the young is flattening and so wondering what your young adults and friends are thinking about taking the vaccine? Mine are early twenties and have both had a first jab and desperate to get the second. Both will go to a walk up as soon as possible. On the whole their friends have the same attitude so I’m wondering if they are unusual given the stats?

My almost 19 year old has declined.

And we aren’t poor or thick, thanks Hmm

examina · 14/07/2021 09:05

Very very grateful and took both doses as soon as offered.

Maybe one day the self-isolation rules will take account of the huge decrease in infection and at least halved rate of transmission so they can stopped being treated as the most infectious element of society.

examina · 14/07/2021 09:06

(the most infectious element of society is actually the unvaccinated, not the young).

I wouldn't state 'All their mates have had it' with any sort of confidence. It could well include some liars. I haven't had it. I'm not a graduate but I'm smart enough to lie about the vaccine because I've got no interest in debating my choice and/or being slagged off for it.

My daughter is 17 and booked in for August. She and all her class, along with every teenager I know personally (am a teacher, not UK) booked their places on 11/6 which was the day slots became released for the 12-17 age group.

DottyHarmer · 14/07/2021 09:10

Ds went and he said he was moved seeing so many young people all so keen - it was quite a festive atmosphere. He had previously taken me and not impressed by all the decrepit over 50s! (Off topic, but by god I was depressed to see myself reflected in the over 50s… if that’s what I could get on Tinder - nooooooo!!)

MajorNeville · 14/07/2021 09:16

DS19, has his first on Sunday.

Branleuse · 14/07/2021 09:18

my 20 year old has had his first one

HairyFloppins · 14/07/2021 09:19

DD aged 19 and all of her friends are either jabbed once or have been fully jabbed earlier this year.

DD aged 14 is very keen to get one but can't at the moment.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/07/2021 09:19

My dd 15 is furious that she can’t have it. All her friends are the same. ‘Boris doesn’t care about us’

And she’s right.

PaulaPetunia · 14/07/2021 09:22

Most in my DC's group have had first dose now. Some went early before their appointment and used the drop in service.

Have heard of one opt out so far.

I'm interested to see the statistics.

PaulaPetunia · 14/07/2021 09:23

My under 18 is keen too.

BarefootHippieChick · 14/07/2021 09:23

Mine are teenagers so not currently eligible, but all my friends children over 18 have had theirs

Mindymomo · 14/07/2021 09:26

Last year my then 24 year old DS said he wouldn’t be getting the vaccine, but the day his age range was open for bookings he booked his first and has managed to get his second one booked for 8 weeks. I know he wants to go to nightclubs again soon, plus he has been out a lot more since having his first vaccine.

PaulaPetunia · 14/07/2021 09:29

It will depend on friendship groups I suppose. And yes the odd person will lie about it I suppose.
But we live in an area where MMR uptake statistic was always high for example, vaccine hesitancy is not a common thing and ime the ones who talk about not having the vaccine are quite repetitive about it.
So my confidence that what I hear reported from this group is true is reasonably high.

WhatIsThisPlease · 14/07/2021 09:32

My DS17 is desperate for it!

Londontown12 · 14/07/2021 09:32

Daughter 18 has had both jabs Az son was reluctant 21 but I kinda pushed him I’m on medication that suppresses immune system! And grandad is quiet frail ! So made him understand it’s not just protecting himself it’s others as well ! And his girlfriend same age has had her first one as well ! X

VoiceFaceArse · 14/07/2021 09:34

ime the ones who talk about not having the vaccine are quite repetitive about it.

The ones who talk about having it are pretty repetitive I find. 😬

I asked my son if his friends were having it, his response was that they have more interesting things to talk about so he hasn’t a clue. I think they have the right idea. 😂
All academic before anyone calls them thick, all currently either doing A levels or at Uni.

VanCleefArpels · 14/07/2021 09:34

To be fair it’s the MHRA that hasn’t authorised vax for under 18’s - not sure that’s Boris’ fault!

My brother and I (24 and 25) both had our letters for our second yesterday which we'll get in a few weeks. I'm excited and most people my age I know are too.

VanCleefArpels · 14/07/2021 09:35

That was due @ArseInTheCoOpWindow (must learn how to reply to comments 🙄)

DS3 had his as soon as eligible back towards the start of the year. Y13, but group 6. He was a bit disappointed he could not take a smiling selfie as he was getting either first or second jab. Which is an almost serious point as promotion through SM is pretty woeful and a serious trick may have been missed.

DS2 at uni super keen, as much if not more from the social responsibility perspective. Had his first jab at very end of May.

DS1 working having graduated a couple of years back more ambivalent and was more of a “I suppose I should” , as opposed to chomping at the bit.

All three had COVID back in December. Their level of enthusiasm was also inversely proportional to the league table ranking of the uni they went to / are at / hope to go to. Although I wouldn’t draw too many conclusions from that.Smile

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/07/2021 09:39

But why are they taking so long to decide? I don’t think they have yet? It’s already been approved, but they are not coming forward when every kid over 12 in the rest of the western world is getting it.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 14/07/2021 09:39

Daughter (18) is desperate to get hers and had it booked the minute she hit 18, except she came down with Covid the day before she was due to get her jab so now she has to wait 4 weeks. Stepson (20) is CV and got his as soon as he was able to.

Theworldisfullofgs · 14/07/2021 09:39

I have a 19 year old. She's had her first and about to get her 2nd ..
