New guidance will be issued by the government telling the public they are “expected” to wearface coveringsin indoor enclosed places, the vaccines minister has said.

Nadhim Zahawialso said he was “confident” the government would ease almost all legal restrictions on 19 July — despite surging cases of the virus and concerns expressed by scientists.

Speaking onSky News, he said: “It’s important we remain cautious and careful. The guidelines that we’ll set out tomorrow will demonstrate that, including guidelines that people are expected to wear a mask in indoor enclosed spaces, and of course remain vigilant.”

While the guidance will not be legally binding, his remarks appear to be a shift in stance fromBoris Johnson’s comments just last week, whosaid people “might choose” to follow the guidancein areas where cases are on the rise and in enclosed spaces, such as public transport at peak hours.

@MissMaple82 - because we work, we have lives. Stop judging us and get on with your own life.

MercyBooth · 11/07/2021 22:23

@HesterShaw1 Once you see the nudges and the nudgers you cant unsee it.

MercyBooth · 11/07/2021 22:25

People like my DH are fed up to the back teeth of being used as a tool to emotionally blackmail others when no one gave a fuck about flu or a common cold affecting him pre Covid. Its manipulative and hypocritical.

WouldBeGood · 11/07/2021 22:29

They’re not worried about your dh @MercyBooth they’re irrationally terrified for their own lives

@lindaellen well said!!!

@MercyBooth I too have a feeling freedom day will not happen. We’re being played.

Wizzbangfizz · 12/07/2021 00:08

Totally agree @MissMaple82

newnortherner111 · 12/07/2021 09:58

The vaccines minister has an opinion which is not shared by the cabinet, or at least the majority, I expect. His response is a coded one to say he would keep face coverings if it were his decision.

Florelei · 12/07/2021 10:09

I don’t understand this at all. Our prime minister is now apparently saying that masks must remain in crowded supermarkets and trains.

From a large number of people on here, this just isn’t going to happen. If it isn’t law then people won’t comply.

So either masks are necessary (in which case they should be mandated in law) or they aren’t necessary in which case the government should be telling us that the science shows that they are no longer necessary.

I don’t get this at all. It seems a little….odd.

walksen · 12/07/2021 10:21

The masks situation from the 19th will in some way mirror that in schools. At most they were recommended from march until may but we're never legally mandated.

From September until then the government advised against them.

On the 19th it seemd likely that overall mask wearing will drop, but ultimately it is still down to personal responsibility about wearing them as it stands.

Who knows though, if the focus groups or polls are saying. The majority are in support they may be kept in certain settings. We will find out tonight I guess!

This is after a year and a half is very simple - masks work along with all other precautionary risk mitigation measures work to mitigate public health airborne human to human super spreading. Hove most/many people in England either chose to unhygienically superficially pretence performative masking where is it obviously sensible to be masked or just lie claiming a new self medical expertise self diagnosis of fraudulently exempt from a pandemic because of saying those convenient get out of criminal fines words - I am exempt. Not scientifically exempt from infection nor super spreading nor therefore exempt from civic duty of care to each other nor the new pandemic disease symptom of classic English me me me I am super special exceptionalism entitlement as it only takes one Covidiot asymptomatic super spreader to cause a new mutating wave of deaths and long Covid disabilities especially to those with less health privilege. Just because people don’t understand nor perform actual personal hygiene like scrubbing hands and not constantly adjusting and dirtying masks does not make it right that proper masking is abandoned because of Covidiots who don’t care about their or your health. Masks work but mask properly and take health and safety with hand and personal hygiene and spacing proximity seriously until the virus can be constrained as otherwise there will forever be perpetual cycles of open a s closed off business sector with long term unsustainable health and wealth damage. If masks don’t work why the sensible Covid performance nations single masked even for young children and outdoors without snowflakery excuses?

UndercoverToad · 12/07/2021 10:42

@Florelei I agree that masks should stay in supermarkets/trains/hospitals/pharmacies etc - places that the vulnerable need to access. I think most will comply just out of a sense of civic engagement. I think we’ll see about 10/20 percent who don’t.

I don’t think Mumsnet is a reflection of society on the whole, I think people come on here to express some pretty controversial viewpoints that they maybe wouldn’t express so much IRL.

I’ve seen more pseudoscience and misinformation here than anywhere else on the internet.

toocold54 · 12/07/2021 11:19

God this is getting boring now... wish the maskers would just stay home where it's "safe" and let the rest of folk get on with living a normal life again

People have to work though.
It’s not fair shop workers have to put themselves at risk because they don’t have a job that they can WFH and people with the above attitude can’t be bothered to wear a mask while they go shopping.

Why not have a rule that if you are at work you don’t need to wear a mask but if you’re not at work and there’s other people around you (shopping, doctors, buses etc) then pop a mask on while you’re there unless you are exempt.

I don't know if it's a large number of people. The same names pop up again and again on these threads and polling shows compliance is much higher than might be assumed if you just took those voices into account.

This is true for me too. I guess its because we have much more control who we associate with in some other places, e g. FB, you are likely to have similar minded friends, and probably are not the type of person to read groups and pages where opposing views are common.

Wizzbangfizz · 12/07/2021 12:20

I think it is far more likely to see 10/20% of people wearing masks and the majority will not.

Carycy · 12/07/2021 12:26

I probably will in some places but not all. And if I am hot and bothered I won’t. Certainly not outdoors like on the school run which I have always thought a bit ridiculous. Yes in a hospital. Yes on a train or busy enclosed space. But I do hope people will stop trying to billy people into wearing them.

Covidatemyhomework · 12/07/2021 12:26

Just been told at work that there will be no chance from 19th July. Still need to wear masks/visors and no change to social distancing and covid safe measures and work from home if we can

DumplingsAndStew · 12/07/2021 12:38

What field of work are you in?

@southeastdweller what? It’s all over the media.

Here's some advice:

Get a grip, take some time out to research the effectiveness of the 3 ply masks, the myth of the asymptomatic super spreader and use paragraphs.

toocold54 · 12/07/2021 14:15

Get a grip, take some time out to research the effectiveness of the 3 ply masks

If you have a cold and sneeze or cough do you cover your mouth?
This is what a mask does it doesn’t fully stop the virus from spreading but it helps trap some of it.

I actually was part of an experiment and if worn correctly the disposable masks were very effective compared to other masks and definitely the visors. But you have to weigh them up against the impact on the environment too.
