Letting it Rip

Why does covid rip rather than spread?

Does flu rip too?

Covid always seems to be ripping through something.

OP posts:

"Let it rip" is one of those phrases I barely heard a year ago. Now every cautious removal of restrictions is 'letting it rip'. Horrible expression, used for maximum melodrama.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/07/2021 10:37

Its because people 'flock' places

TheVampiresWife · 09/07/2021 10:39

Just said on another thread that 'let it rip' puts me in mind of farts, which is fitting because those who say it are usually talking out of their arse.

LightAsTheBreeze · 09/07/2021 10:39

It adds to the drama like many other phrases around covid

MrsSkylerWhite · 09/07/2021 10:41

It’s “letting rip” because pubs and beaches aren’t crowded anymore, they’re “rammed”.

Sells more papers, I guess.

Puppysharness · 09/07/2021 10:42

It’s because of all the people ‘swanning off’ and/ or ‘jetting off’ abroad

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/07/2021 10:44

I will gladly never hear the word bubble again unless its in the context of fizzy wines.

IcedPurple · 09/07/2021 10:45

Some good ones above.

"Selfish idiots flocking to beaches/jetting off to the costa/swanning around without a mask."

"Everywhere in my town is rammed."

And don't forget the heaving 'house parties' that Sarah at number 14 has every weekend. As seen through the net curtains.

PatriciaHolm · 09/07/2021 10:47

And it's presumably "ripping" through all the people "thrown under the bus". It's pretty busy under that bus.

MarshaBradyo · 09/07/2021 10:49

Yes it’s replaced ‘blended learning’ at number one spot

‘Watching in horror’
‘Exceptionalism’
Petri dish
Bubble bursting (yuk)

Actually so much is fairly gross sounding

Arsebucket · 09/07/2021 10:50

You let a fart rip.

Sadly, that’s all I can think about when I hear the phrase.

Lostinacloud · 09/07/2021 10:50

Ah the days of ‘unprecedented’ seem so long ago Grin

Arsebucket · 09/07/2021 10:52

I’m waiting for his next “Alas….”

MarshaBradyo · 09/07/2021 10:54

Haha brilliant Grin yes it does

Can’t think of other old ones

I really hate 'blended learning'. The only 'blended' I want is my breakfast smoothie. Not sure which is worse, that or 'hybrid' learning. They're both awful.
walkoflifewoohoo · 09/07/2021 10:57

In this unprecedented situation we've had to adapt to the new normal, being covid safe even when on rammed beaches. The tide is turning, alas, and we're now letting it rip, unchecked, even as we see exponential growth of cases. Public transport is a hotbed of infection so wash your hands, stay indoors, protect the nhs if you get pinged.

Cornettoninja · 09/07/2021 10:59

It’s not particularly new terminology for an outbreak of a contagious illness 🤷‍♀️. This is from 2017.

www.scientificamerican.com/article/norovirus-outbreak-reported-among-gop-convention-staffers/

The pesky bugs are exceedingly contagious. Norovirus outbreaks rip through crowds, and are often associated with travelers on cruise ships, children in day care centers, or guests at a wedding

89redballoons · 09/07/2021 10:59

Is it because of people flouting the rules? You can't just break Covid-related rules. You have to flout them.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/07/2021 11:01

Don't forget this is a GLOBAL PANDEMIC.

Not a normal one.

GoldenOmber · 09/07/2021 11:03

Nah it’s because of all the kids being rammed and shoved and thrown back into schools. Nobody ever just walks through a school doorway in these unprecedented times.

TheKeatingFive · 09/07/2021 11:09

Oh I hated that with every fibre of my being.

Then someone on here coined ‘bellended’ so I ran with that. Grin

But my absolute least favourite is ‘COVID doesn’t care if you xyz’.

Of course it doesn’t, it’s not sentient, you absolute goddamn idiot.

GoldenOmber · 09/07/2021 11:10

Blended in the sense that it’s a blend between learning and not learning.

IcedPurple · 09/07/2021 11:11

I also loathe the expression 'Covid secure'. It's a microscopic virus. How can anything be 'secure' against it?

It's usually used as a selling point, but to me, the thought of a 'Covid secure' restaurant or pub is so sterile and joyless. I'd rather stay at home and have a takeaway.
