Will you feel more or less confident to 'go back to normal' on the 19th July?

Take holidays out the equation for the purpose of the thread. It's more in terms of day-to-day life and socialising etc.

Personally, i've enjoyed going to pubs and restaurants etc recently and catching up with friends again. Any socialising will run the risk with the virus, but there's measures in place to mitigate that risk.

Now, I know we need to go back to normal and businesses need to operate properly. However, the way the government have gone about it with letting the variant run riot in the build up. Dropping masks in schools and now altogether from the 19th, an end to social distancing altogether. It's basically eat out to help out on steroids in terms of spreading Covid and could be counter productive for hospitality by autumn.

Basically, are you thinking sod it, i'm going to catch it I might as well get on with things, or 'i'm going to roll back on what i'm doing now' (pubs/restaurants etc)? . We're paying the price for just how badly this whole thing has been handled. Neither are ideal.

My daughter is waiting for an operation and if she has a positive Covid test she's not allowed to have the operation for 7 weeks.

The timing could not be worse for us. The nursery recently had its first Covid case so we are probably taking her out and taking unpaid leave to cover childcare. It is going to cost us at least £2k in lost nursery fees and earnings, but she is often in pain and we can't risk a 7 week delay.

Love the 'if I get it so be it' attitude. 'I'm quite relaxed about getting it'.
For me it was far worse than any flu. Didn't need hospitalisation but was pretty much sofa bound for 6 weeks and off work 3 months. Massive relapse and back off work, probably going to have to take early retirement. Can assure you that 'feeling relaxed' was not my primary emotion during the acute phase. I work on ICU. Worked all the way through the pandemic and by end of the year was getting quite blase. I was convinced I'd be ok too, very physically fit, normal bmi, mild asthma. Sadly and ironically I caught it off dp and the whole experience was bl*y frightening and something I never want to repeat.

@Sanguinesuzy I’m sorry you were so poorly.

I’m also sorry to use your example to illustrate a point, but for those who are sick but not severely, they’re still risking a significant amount of time off work (if that’s their situation). I’m presuming as you work in ICU you’re NHS and therefore sick leave/pay is pretty good. The NHS is the only place I’ve ever experienced that, every other job I’ve had (including my current one) is SSP and not much tolerance for long periods of sick. I’m expecting periods of time off sick aren’t going to be met universally with understanding from many companies after the last year and the push to get things back up and running.

Sanguinesuzy · 10/07/2021 12:42

@Cornettoninja NHS has been supportive and half pay doesn't kick in til 6 months absence. I was also lucky that my first episode of sickness with covid was not included in my overall sick leave which eased the potentially worrying financial implications of being ill so long ! My manager has been great which I am very appreciative of.

I believe this current wave is predicted to peak around 4th August.

I have a number of things I really want to do before and slightly after that date.

As a result I'm consciously limited my plans to try and protect those things.

Aside from that we are at the mercy of school and whether DS's bubble pops.

The data does clearly highlight a behavioural change which really cannot be explained by anything other than England v Scotland so im conscious that this week is going to be 'interesting'...

My concern is about the need to isolate. It is that that is causing all the disruption and difficulties, not covid per se.

ILookAtTheFloor · 10/07/2021 13:26

Don't want to isolate and will do everything to avoid that but otherwise I can't bloody wait GrinGrin

In the same way that when your smoke alarm goes off the main problem is that annoying sound it makes, and not at all the fire it is telling you about.

We aren't all incapable of rational decision making nutnuts...

People love a bit of hyperbole on here

Still very low risk late 40s, double jabbed, no health issues

Unlike I would be with a fire in a building

RedToothBrush · 10/07/2021 13:45

You are more likely to have a false or test fire alarm than a real one. And even if theres a fire you are still likely to make it out the building - along with everyone else - even if theres a fire.

Those least likely to make it out are elderly or disabled. And the most likely to end up in a fire are those in poor or densely packed accommodation.

Risk is a funny thing stacked against certain people.

I'm sorry to hear that but you must realise that your experience is the exception rather than the norm.

Not isolating when asked to do so is like propping the fire doors open and letting it spread then isn't it?

Or turning off the fire alarms for other people.

Backofbeyond50 · 10/07/2021 20:07

@Wishfulthinking1977 most were ill at home. All late 30s to early 50s. One was hospitalised for several days. Two have Long COVID or at least lingering symptoms.
None either known medical conditions.

When the touch paper is lit on the 19th, I'm going to retreat to a safe distance and watch the fireworks. I shall continue to be mindful of my safety and the safety of others, despite most of those others not giving a toss about my safety in return.

See you in the next lockdown.

JustDanceAddict · 14/07/2021 18:49

I’ll carry on as I am:
Eating outside where possible
Thankfully masks will still be mandatory on TfL
Anything outside I’m ok on, inside will be more worrying.
I’ve had my jabs so not too worried, but I have no qualms of walking out of somewhere I feel uncomfortable

I’ll be joining you. Much like I did at the start of the pandemic when everyone was saying ‘oh no, it’ll never get to the uk’, ‘ oh no, it’ll never cause food shortages’, ‘oh no, schools won’t close’ etc.etc. I’ve been right Everytime. Sadly, I think I will be this time as well.

It's essentials only for us from now on.

Online supermarket shopping, no indoor mixing, continuing to wear a mask and SD when we need to leave home.

We're doing our bit to keep everyone else safe, are you?

This virtue signalling from people is going to have the opposite effect than you want it to.

Oh, I don't think so.

A healthy majority of us are in favour of keeping restrictions.

I note how those who most enjoy telling other people how selfish they are are very very careful not to disclose their personal circumstances.

Yes because they will be mainly wfh, fairly well off and relying on everyone else running round delivering to them. Keeping everyone safe of course
