If you had to shield but are fully jabbed, how careful are you being?

As someone who shielded for most of last year, I'm finding it really hard to adjust to the new policy which seems to basically be "covid is over, you're on your own" Hmm I suffer terribly with anxiety and am very risk averse, so although I am double jabbed I have no idea how cautious I should be now case numbers are going up so much, and after the Euros they will probably be astronomical. Any other shielding people going through similar, how cautious will you be now?

I've just seen this on Twitter

thrown to the wolves

this is how I feel right nowHmm

Surely they'll have to bring Shielding back if they are going to allow more cases than we've ever seen before?

It's about to be much more dangerous for people who were advised to shield than at any previous point in the pandemic.

noblegiraffe · 08/07/2021 15:36

Yes, twitter suggests new guidance will be out soon.

Government forgot about shielding people it seems.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/07/2021 15:39

I feel pretty good. I think with dexamethasone getting the green light and the vaccine I'm in a lot better position than this time last year if I get the virus.

I'm not shielding again.

Yes, this is my concern. I'm considering cancelling a family holiday to a busy city because of it and staying closer to home over the summer, but I'm worried people will think I'm being "overly anxious" about it all, despite cases when we go being higher than probably at any other stage in the pandemic. Though I am only CV not CEV and I AM fully vaccinated, I still really, really don't want to get Covid.

I have been voluntarily shielding myself again for the last 3-4 weeks. Rates are very high round here and I was jabbed in early Dec so my immunity will have waned (although to what degree is unknown).

Radio4ordie · 08/07/2021 16:03

I think it does depend on the reason you were shielding and whether the vaccine is known to work less well on your particular condition. The government should update its advice for shielding to take account of this and also ensure those who do need to continue to be more protected (which want to the whole group of previous shielders) are protected in law in employment, education etc.

Egghead68 · 08/07/2021 16:03

P.s. we (CEV) were advised to shield until April 1st even if fully vaccinated, and rates were much lower then.

Radio4ordie · 08/07/2021 16:04

That should say “(which won’t be the whole group of previous shielders)”

The government won’t do anything except advise us to be cautious.
FourTeaFallOut · 08/07/2021 16:04

But most of us only had one jab at that point.

Egghead68 · 08/07/2021 16:07

@FourTeaFallOut

But most of us only had one jab at that point.
We were specifically advised to continue to shield even if we had both jabs.
FourTeaFallOut · 08/07/2021 16:09

Yes, I know but I think they were just trying to keep things uniform. They don't like to complicate the message.

Pinkroseuk · 08/07/2021 16:09

Hubby is in this situation and im now pregnant with no jabs. We have been just going to outdoor places for walks still and seeing my parents. Other than that pretty much still at home.
As cases go up we will probably be doing even less as it's just not worth the risk to us

epidemiologicallystupid · 08/07/2021 16:09

we can be as cautious as we like, but unfortunatly my DH has to go to work, he has all thru the pandemic and he caught it and gave it me, luckily it was mild. I have had 2 AZ doses but fully expect to get it again as immunity wanes and due to the new variants.

unfortunately i think we are all going to be exposed to this virus

hopeishere · 08/07/2021 16:09

I've never really understood "bring back shielding". If you want to and need to shield you are free to do so. It's not and never was mandatory. Is there any advantage to "official" shielding?

DH is super vulnerable and careful anyway.

Egghead68 · 08/07/2021 16:10

They said that it was because the effects of vaccination on the CEV population(s) were unknown.

I haven’t seen any research or figures so I guess they are still unknown.

greenlynx · 08/07/2021 16:10

We all ( I, DH and DD ). DD is CV. We are going to be more cautious after 19th. We are not going abroad this summer or anywhere busy like London or any other big city. I went out with a friend 2 weeks ago, but I don’t think I would do this again after 19th. Theater, restaurants, concerts etc are temporarily out of question.

Egghead68 · 08/07/2021 16:11

The only advantage to official shielding is that it makes it easier with your employers.

greenlynx · 08/07/2021 16:11

Sorry, meant we all are fully jabbed.

NotMyCat · 08/07/2021 16:13

@hopeishere yes if you work - it gives you more leeway to say "look, I still need to work from home" rather than being forced back to work with no masks, distancing etc

ThatsNotMyReindeer · 08/07/2021 16:13

Lockdown life suited me quite well. I'm back to office working and seeing clients but my organisation is very strict on covid measures so it's limited numbers in offices on a rota system. I wouldn't shield to the extent I was last time, just he cautious and sensible (which I am ready as DH is only half vaccinated, DS not vaccinated at all and the thought of 10d isolation with a toddler is my idea of hell!)

dannydyerismydad · 08/07/2021 16:15

DH is the ECV person in our house. We've made the decision that we won't be taking a holiday this year - just days out at quieter places locally. Sick of living a restricted life, but it's preferable to a life without DH.

It seems that this summer is going to be a free for all for the fit and healthy. Who knows what winter will bring.
