I’ll just leave this here.

Probably best to throw those masks away sooner rather than later.

@foxandbee I’ll try to find it on Monday when I’m back at work. The NHS/HSCP senior managers presented it several times at partnership meetings last summer. For the other stuff there’s reports everywhere detailing it. It’s a conversation we really need to be having. Of course the biggest impact as usual is on those at the bottom of the pile to start with.

borntobequiet · 10/07/2021 16:54

still screeching about mask wearing. Enough is enough

Any post that uses the word “screeching” to describe people expressing opinions other than those of the poster is a good indication of unreasonable bias.

“Look everyone, some kids are sick so I was proved right!”
Hmm

Ozanj · 10/07/2021 17:17

Last winter my DS was really sick almost every other week to the point where we were asked to go directly to our pediatric unit rather than wait in A&E. It was scary then especially as we almost lose two kids in the family & I was under a lot of pressure from family to accept furlough and stay at home with dc but in hindsight I’m grateful we got it over with before DS got his molars in.

Back teeth plus infections is a nightmare with toddlers

I don't understand this article as NZ didn't really lockdown

mbosnz · 10/07/2021 17:57

NZ really did lock down, but very early on, very hard, and therefore, not for very long.

Yes it did on around the same date as us
Schmoana · 10/07/2021 19:15

NZ hasn’t had anywhere near the length of lockdowns as us. Especially in the north, we’ve barely been out of lockdown, except last august and the last few weeks.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

How would you handle it then Mathshelpme? Tell us your plans for dealing with a worldwide pandemic.

Btw, ipsos/Mori poll out today says about 70% of public want continued masks and social distancing after ‘freedom’ day.

Nothing to stop those 70% doing it then, is there?

True

mbosnz · 10/07/2021 19:18

It didn't have the length of lockdowns, because of how hard it went in the first place, which it was able to do so, and had the leadership and will to do so, for a number of reasons, in contrast to other places in the world. It has been fortunate, but a lot of that good fortune was created by the way it went about things (as well as serendipity of location, isolation, lower, less densely sited population).

MarshaBradyo · 10/07/2021 19:19

It was also much earlier on the curve in late March

This is a huge factor. At just over 100 cases it was just possible to trace them all in full lockdown.

Comparative numbers were much earlier in U.K. / Italy etc

Kazzyhoward · 10/07/2021 19:20

I think NZ closed their borders with harsh restrictions and therefore did quite well at keeping it out.

Isle of Man did similar. It was pretty normal in IOM, but then when covid found it's way in (via a ferry worker), there were hundreds of cases in a very short time frame, which needed another harsh lockdown to control.

Luckily, both IOM and NZ could do harsh border controls. Unlike mainland UK, they didn't have thousands of cars/vans/lorries in and out of their borders every day delivering essentials. IOM and NZ imports/exports were more "container" based so containers could be left at ports meaning drivers weren't going with their goods. We couldn't do that in the UK.
