LFT - lemon juice and fruit shoot

JustMeG · 02/07/2021 13:56

Anyone else seen the posts regarding school children putting lemon juice and fruit shoots on LFT's?

A few posts and videos circulating of secondary aged children putting juice on LFT'S which comes back as a positive test so the whole year group can isolate.

How is it possible for this to happen?

Yes, I understand it’s been doing the rounds on TikTok. Grapefruit juice too I think. The LFT instructions do say not to eat or drink anything half an hour before doing the test as it can affect the result.

ahayavsbs · 02/07/2021 14:08

Yes, we've tried it and it does work. However our school isn't getting anyone to isolate until a LFT positive is confirmed with a PCR test.

JustMeG · 02/07/2021 14:12

I didn't know that. That will teach me to read the full instructions next time @Inastatus.

Yes, that is what all schools should do now @ahayavsbs

My brother says they are spraying perfume on at his school. Not sure how that works! Maybe he is confused and means this mixture!

Hope this ridiculous isolations stop soon.

JustMeG · 02/07/2021 14:23

Could well be true @Delatron.
Yes I hope it does.

Same here re isolations only when there's a positive PCR. And then it's not whole bubbles as it was before but only close contacts.

SvenandSven · 02/07/2021 14:34

I have just tried lemon juice on one it didn't give a control line let alone a positive!
I haven't got fruit shoots so can't try that but oasis summer fruits gives a positive BUT it dyes the S window pink.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 02/07/2021 14:39

It’s so weird - what on earth is the LFT looking for if sugar, water and citric acid give a positive result?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 02/07/2021 14:41

Kiwis and cola I believe have the same effect.

JustMeG · 02/07/2021 14:58

That's the way it should be for all schools @Leaveitonthefloordrobe.

@SvenandSven I'm not sure re- lemon juice only what I seen on the post.

I have no idea @Allmyarseandpeggymartin.

@DobbyTheHouseElk I haven't seen anything about that but it wouldn't surprise me after seeing the others.

I heard this today. Experimented with a squeeze of jif lemon just to see what happened. Well, nothing happened. I didn't even get the control line (but then 8 didn't watch the tiktok videos).

roguetomato · 02/07/2021 15:55

If your dc did this and get to SI, you can't really blame the gov or school for disruption to dc's education.
Though I read that only PCR positive is counted as covid positive, it doesn't skew the number of positive cases. It only affects the school and people involved.
Though I think it's a bit silly thing to do, unless you have some bad intentions, no one wants false positive on the test hugely disrupt people's lives.

Todaytomorrowyesterday · 02/07/2021 15:58

Isolation at ours only happens with a positive PCR.

Main issue at our school is parents using LFT with symptoms and claiming as they negative it’s ok Confused then getting annoyed with school when they asking for a PCR only to return to school.

JustMeG · 02/07/2021 16:07

@SvenandSven That is crazy.

😂😂😂 @Suranjeep

I didn't even know if it was true or if it had been altered @SallyOMalley.

@roguetomato my dc are younger so doesn't really affect me. I just thought it was crazy how they managed to do it. I would like to know what actually made them think of even trying it?
It's silly really so close to the school holidays they don't have long left in school.

@Todaytomorrowyesterday I have heard of a few parents doing that.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/07/2021 16:21

Our school are isolating on LFT only and have sent the whole of DS year home until the last week of term. They say they can't force students to take a PCR test so if they don't get one done after a LFT then tough luck for the rest of the year. I would happily kick the arse of anyone I knew who was faking them in our school, the last thing we need is more kids out of the classroom. Idiots.

TerrifiedandWorried · 02/07/2021 16:26

I have Covid and have been trying to get a positive lateral flow test and haven't. Now on 10 negatives since 48 hrs before I got it. Maybe I should have a fruit shoot first (yes, I am very bored)

stairway · 02/07/2021 16:30

Ive just tried with orangina that comes back positive too.

JustMeG · 02/07/2021 16:33

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn surely the parents should take charge with the children that are refusing to do a pcr test.

OP posts:
Lollyds · 02/07/2021 16:34

It’s the acidity in the drinks, it’s denaturing the antibodies used in the testing line and immobilising them, causing what seems to be a positive test. The liquid they provide is a buffer, ensuring the sample remains at the correct pH, preventing this from happening Smile

JustMeG · 02/07/2021 16:34

@TerrifiedandWorried sorry to hear that. I hope you are well.
