Test and trace, and train reservations

quick question - if someone was to test positive and had travelled on a train, would you get a ping through t+t only if you had the app on, or can they access reservation data?

I just got pinged, and will obviously isolate, but i'm trying ot work out what the cause was (mainly out of curiousity). 10 days takes me to sunday, where all i did was lie in bed, but i was supposed to travel back on the train (I left on monday morning instead).

There's a bit on the app that tells you when the contact was. I very much doubt they would go as far as to access reservation data and it will have been triggered by the Bluetooth on your phone registering that you have been close to someone for the correct amount of time to make you a contact

valnevavaxx · 01/07/2021 10:57

You can check the exact date of contact in the app- settings > other data > encounter date

How many days have you got left to isolate? The day of encounter doesn't count as the first day of isolation, the day after does, so it could well have been from when you travelled on Monday. I doubt they would get it from train bookings.

wishfuldreamer · 01/07/2021 11:05

I don't have the app - my old phone was too old to run it, and haven't installed it on new one yet. so it's not bluetooth proximity, as to be either a place which has given details, or a person.

I've got to isolate until tuesday inclusive, so day days backwards is sunday. so that means contact was on saturday? still don't know what it is then, unless it's someone i know, but I'd have thought they would get in touch directly to be honest. but maybe not.

i also thought it was unlikely they'd get it from train bookings, but i couldn't work out what else it would have been!

I am currently in the middle of isolating until Tuesday inclusive and my contact was Saturday, so I would assume it is that!

I am not sure how you got pinged though if you don't have the app? Who or what pinged you?

PurpleDaisies · 01/07/2021 11:07

It won’t be the reservation. People sit in different carriages. People miss trains.

Bobothemojo · 01/07/2021 11:08

Day of contact is day 0 so I think if you are isolating until Tuesday you came into contact on the Saturday?

Where did you go Saturday?

covidcloser · 01/07/2021 11:08

I just got pinged,

How did you get pinged in an app that you don't have?

dementedpixie · 01/07/2021 11:08

Is it from test and trace itself then?
That means someone has given your details

dementedpixie · 01/07/2021 11:10

And I also think contact would have been Saturday

wishfuldreamer · 01/07/2021 11:13

thanks, saturday seems more likely, as i met up with some people. just surprised that no one texted me directly that they'd had a positive test. ah well, until someone tells me directly, it shall remain a mystery. fortunately, i now have a week to carry on sleuthing ;-)

OP posts:
wishfuldreamer · 01/07/2021 11:16

oh, the reason i thought maybe it was the train was because when i logged in via teh text, they had my mobile and email address already, and i don't think anyone i saw on saturday, other than my boyfriend, would have had my email.

ah well. it doesn't really matter. and i did need a weekend to clean the house properly, so...

OP, do you live in a terraced house or semi? There have been anecdotal reports of people being pinged because their next door neighbours are positive and the app can't tell that there's a wall between them.

PurpleDaisies · 01/07/2021 12:15

She doesn’t have the app.
wishfuldreamer · 01/07/2021 13:00

well, no one else from saturday appears to have had a notification or tested positive that we know of, so i'm at a total loss. i guess it just feels frustrating having to cancel all my plans and not really know why.

OP posts:
valnevavaxx · 01/07/2021 13:10

Where did you meet with people, inside someone's house or at a bar etc?

Who pinged you if you don't have the app?

BoomChicka · 01/07/2021 13:17

What does pinged mean? I thought that meant an app notification?

wishfuldreamer · 01/07/2021 13:20

sorry, i'm just being colloquial about it when i say 'ping' - it's become the word amongst my group of friends. I got a text from Test and Trace this morning telling me i'd been identified as a close contact.

We met up in the park for a picnic, so it would have to be an actual person who gave my details.

OP posts:
valnevavaxx · 01/07/2021 13:34

Did you not take any public transport, pop into any shops to get picnic supplies, pass any other people at all between your home and the park?

I've been pinged (by the app) before from being sat outside a bar with someone who tested positive- they weren't sat in the group with me, they were a table over. I hadn't checked in as we were outside, but I assume that was from the bluetooth of the app- which I know you don't have. Were there any groups of people sat near you? Although I suppose that wouldn't explain how they got your details, very strange!

I would expect direct contact from T&T to come with more specific information about when you were in contact with someone, did you have to log into their website when you got the text?

wishfuldreamer · 01/07/2021 13:36

yes, i got the train on the saturday, but don't use the app - hence my original question about whether they are given information about train reservations. I think that's the only place it can be. i guess i'm kind of reassured if they go to this length to contact trace, but i also don't always get the train i've booked, so it would be good to know if they are actually doing this.

OP posts:
wishfuldreamer · 01/07/2021 13:37

oh, and sorry - i logged in, and it took my details (already had phone and email), gave address and any info on symptoms, and then it just told me how long i had to isolate for. no information as to exposure day (had to work that out counting backwards) or where from (I don't think it ever tells you though, even on the app?).

OP posts:
valnevavaxx · 01/07/2021 13:38

It doesn't on the app, but I understood that being contacted by T&T was different as isolating via those means is a legal requirement they would give you more information. But from what you're saying it sounds like not!

SmidgenofaPigeon · 01/07/2021 13:40

I don’t think I’d simply be isolating on for the days on the basis of that, that’s ridiculous.

wishfuldreamer · 01/07/2021 13:45

No, they’ve not given me more info, and I don’t think they ever do. Other people I know have only found out because the positive tester contacted them directly rather than test and trace telling them.

OP posts:
MoiraNotRuby · 01/07/2021 13:46

I'm a bit confused, do they just have your number or did they know your name as well? If T&T just contact whatever number someone says they had contact with, they could easily get one digit wrong.

It is so easily done. Every so often I get texted car valuations I haven't asked for. I delete and ignore but for something like this its a lot more of a big deal.
