@TheVampiresWife

Spat at? Christ, that's reprehensible. Where are these things happening? I don't live a cosseted life and am out and about a lot. Have worked through the pandemic. I've never known the like! Truly awful behaviour from some.

WouldBeGood · 01/07/2021 08:29

I’ll only go on holiday somewhere non-Covid mental anyway.

ILoveMagnums · 01/07/2021 08:29

I will be ditching it the second I hear we are allowed to. I have to wear one at work (not NHS) and I really hope our customers do not expect us to wear one when they don’t have to.

I don’t care if others want to carry on wearing them. Some of my colleagues caught covid and they were wearing masks. I don’t touch my face half as much as I do wearing a mask. IMO all that touching spreads it.

Blossomtoes · 01/07/2021 08:32

@fat13

I’m worried shops and other places will insist on them anyway Sad
They can’t if they’re not legally necessary. I intend to ceremonially burn mine.
TeddingtonTrashbag · 01/07/2021 08:35

Ooooh let’s have a MN mask burning party on the day! (was all ready to burn mine on the 21st till that was kiboshed 😀)

Sparklingbrook · 01/07/2021 08:37

I have to wear one all day for work when I didn't previously. I can't wait to not have to.
But I won't be burning my extensive mask collection. I think they may be needed in the future, and I'll definitely keep one with me just in case I feel the need, regardless of whether anyone else does.

WouldBeGood · 01/07/2021 08:37

I’m in for the burning, despite living in Scottish Gilead 😃

Xenia · 01/07/2021 08:39

Hope so. He will probably need to introduce legislation forcing London Underground to allow those who do not want to wear a mask not to wear one and the air ports in order to ensure compliance by those places.

Todayissunny · 01/07/2021 08:40

Not in the uk. Im a teacher. Kids in schools here have stopped wearing masks about a week ago and teachers now only wearing when in close contact with kids or other teachers. Me and my own dcs have already got horrendous colds. I'm going back to wearing mine as much as possible. I really haven't missed all the colds and flu.

EileenGC · 01/07/2021 08:41

Reopening makes sense domestically, but I wonder how other countries will view the UK when it becomes even more of a delta festering ground.

They already have pretty much the strictest level of restrictions for incoming travellers from the UK. Where I live it’s 14 days quarantine with no option to shorten it, vaccines or not. All other risk areas you do 5 days of quarantine, or are exempt if vaxxed + tested, but not from UK. Of course, this only affects those of us who haven’t seen our families or friends in over a year (but people will now say we should’ve taken pandemics into consideration before moving abroad).

I’m really glad the UK is opening up, I’m really glad the country I live in is also opening up. But no one has stopped for a moment to think how that will affect international reopening. Many, many millions of people will now have to wait another many months, or years, before seeing their loved ones again. I can travel all over the EU, I can travel to London to watch the football and wear no mask in a packed stadium. But I’m not allowed to go give my friend a hug, because it’s unsafe and, ‘delta’…

moulderingoldlady · 01/07/2021 08:41

I have just ordered a load more masks, was running low. Me and my family will carry using them, the virus does not know that it is Freedom Day and suddenly become uncontagious. Still going to social distance too. The WHO recommends it also.

ExConstance · 01/07/2021 08:42

It is so much of a faff to go shopping for clothes or out for a meal at the moment that I'm sure mask wearing is having an effect on the economy. If they do away with the requirement I'll be out to buy new things in person rather than on line much more. I've put up with the requirements to go out for the occasional top end meal recently but not been into cafes or chain restaurants because all the mask wearing and giving details spoils the enjoyment, I'm not sure the grubby-worn-many-times-items that people are pulling out of their bags and putting on their faces can do much to protect anyone anyway now. Roll on freedom day.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/07/2021 08:43

Our local secondaries have brought them back into the classroom in a desperate attempt to try and stay open until the summer holidays

frumpety · 01/07/2021 08:43

Will no doubt still have to wear them at work.

Cases are still rising ( 1st of june 3,099 cases, 30th of june 25,606 cases ), but watching the local figures, this isn't translating into a big increase in hospitalisations, which is good, very much keeping my fingers crossed it continues. All we can do is watch and wait and hope the trend of low hospitalisations continues.

EileenGC · 01/07/2021 08:45

The most they could do about airports is not making them mandatory in the building, and perhaps on BA flights (or other UK airlines). Once you get on another airline’s plane, you need to abide by their own rules. I’m flying Lufthansa tomorrow, from a country where all types of masks are accepted, including cloth. Lufthansa is German, in Germany only FFP2 are allowed, therefore I need to wear FFP2 on the flight. What the local government says has no bearing in these cases.

You do understand that social distancing isn't just about standing 2m apart in the Tesco queue don't you?
RunnerDown · 01/07/2021 08:46

@TeddingtonTrashbag
Wow. I will continue to wear my mask because in mid July we will probably be at high numbers of cases of a very transmissible variant. Wearing a mask is a minor inconvenience and I can’t believe all the hand wringing that goes on about it.
But interesting that so many posters desperate to ditch their masks make ignorant sweeping statements about the personalities of people who will make an informed choice to continue wearing them. It just shows a complete lack of nuance and understanding on their part .

TheGenealogist · 01/07/2021 08:47

@hopeishere

I think a lot of people will continue to wear them.
And that's up to them. There is not going to be a converse law banning masks.

But the people who choose to continue to wear them are going to have to accept that not everyone shares their opinion, and give over with the huffing and puffing at fellow shoppers.

LightasaBreeze · 01/07/2021 08:47

Good, I need to go to Ikea so will wait until after the 19th

TheVampiresWife · 01/07/2021 08:48

I agree. But those of us who are exempt have had to put up with this and a lot, lot worse for a year now. On MN we've been told not to leave the house, give up work, called all the selfish filthy superspreaders under the sun.

I can't wait for that not to be a thing anymore!

Greyrootszerohoots · 01/07/2021 08:49

I’d happily wear one of it continues to make others feel more comfortable, but I will look forward to the face mask police (I’m looking at you, man in the outdoor bit of the garden centre, who told me off when my 1 y/o pulled down my mask to see my mouth!)

emmathedilemma · 01/07/2021 08:49

I'm not due my 2nd jab until that date so I'll be wearing mine a while longer thanks!

Roonerspismed · 01/07/2021 08:49

I’m unvaccinated and remaining so. I am delighted masks are going but I’m in Scotland so thing Sturgeon will pretend she gives a shit and keeps them for another decade

C8H10N4O2 · 01/07/2021 08:50

I wonder how long I can get away with wearing one before people start avoiding me thinking I’m an over anxious hand ringer

I wouldn't be surprised if it sticks a bit in some areas anyway. Long before the pandemic masks on public transport were pretty commonplace in parts of London. I've worked in countries where its just normal polite behaviour in crowded public spaces such as transport.

It would be interesting (though probably impossible) to see if a Winter promoting masks on public transport resulted in less infections. Reductions in coughs/colds/general stuff last Winter amongst staff was noticeable including those working on location. The key difference cited was quiet public transport.
