No legal compulsion to wear face masks once restrictions are lifted

Sky News reporting this morning that George Eustice has said with the removal of restrictions on July 19th will also come the removal of legal requirements to wear face coverings. I’m torn on how I feel about this.

Good.

BelleClapper · 24/06/2021 08:25

Thank fuck for that.

Bargebill19 · 24/06/2021 08:26

Yay!

BelleClapper · 24/06/2021 08:27

I’ve never been convinced that the manky unwashed bit of fabric over most peoples faces is doing any good at all.

I see people in my place of work every day pull crumpled disposable masks out of their pockets to put on and take off and put back on again. Just what kind of protection is that offering?

Ooo yeah that’s a bit grim. I do worry about the impact on the environment too of single use masks and LFTs

No fucker is wearing them anyway. I’m currently on public transport and not a single person under about 20 is bothering, and around a third of those over 20 are not wearing one.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/06/2021 08:39

Thank god.

byvirtue · 24/06/2021 08:41

I’m thrilled can’t wait to see people’s faces again.

Masks do FA anyway

Geamhradh · 24/06/2021 08:43

There never has been a legal requirement has there? In the UK?
I'm not in the UK and we can ditch ours next week. Light at the end of the tunnel!

TempsPerdu · 24/06/2021 08:43

I’ll be delighted if this is indeed the case.

FindingMeno · 24/06/2021 08:44

If the scientists say its ok then that's fine by me because I know fuck all about viruses.

EssentialHummus · 24/06/2021 08:46

I'm very happy. I've complied with the mask (and other) rules throughout but find it very difficult to - firstly because my glasses fogged up badly and it took a few months to find a way around that; now because I'm pregnant and find it harder to breath to the point where I often have to pull the mask down at intervals to gulp fresh air.

I quietly suspect that masks worn the way most people wear them - repeatedly, not necessarily clean, under noses, lots of adjustment - don't make a whole lot of difference and I'm looking forward to setting the lot on fire. I'd add the obvious points about facial expressions and communication too.

Sparklingbrook · 24/06/2021 08:46

I have to wear one all day for work. I will be really happy not to have to. But will still be trying to do the SD thing. I will hold onto that bit.

SpringRainbow · 24/06/2021 08:47

I have also been a bit unsure at how much protection they really offered.

From what I understand about masks protection would only really work if everyone wore them correctly.

That has never happened because some people were exempt, some people didn’t practice the correct hygiene, some many people didn’t wear them correctly, plus there is a lot of uncertainty as to how much protection reusable fabric ones provide.

So, for the most part I always just assumed masks was more to make people feel they were doing something, rather than actually doing something.

Sparklingbrook · 24/06/2021 08:50

I have mixed feelings about the science re masks.
I mean if someone coughed or sneezed in my face /close to me I would feel better about it if I had a mask on.

LightasaBreeze · 24/06/2021 08:53

Good, not so many wear them now anyway, I don't mind for places like doctors and dentist but certainly shan't be wearing them generally in places like shops and public toilets, I don't use public transport.

megletthesecond · 24/06/2021 08:53

I'll be keeping mine in enclosed areas. I don't have time to get ill, even a cold. They do a decent job.

Greenmarmalade · 24/06/2021 08:55

The protection offered: they stop all the droplets spraying out into the room, which potentially contain coronavirus. I imagine they also avoid breathing in such droplets.

Sparklingbrook · 24/06/2021 08:55

I have to say where I live everyone is still mask compliant or wearing a badge/lanyard.
Although you can get the badges in Home Bargains 3 for 99p)
V unusual to see someone with neither a mask or badge.

WrongKindOfFace · 24/06/2021 08:55

Agreed. I’d like to think people would continue to wear them if they are unwell and can’t keep their distance. But I reckon come august we’ll be back to people coughing in your face again.
Lottapianos · 24/06/2021 08:56

Amazing. Cannot wait to ditch mine. I'm NHS so will probably still have to wear one at work but would be thrilled to be free of them apart from that

Sparklingbrook · 24/06/2021 08:56

Yes that’s what I think @WrongKindOfFace. I’ve always liked my personal space even before all this.
I might keep a mask in my bag just in case.

MRex · 24/06/2021 08:57

I'll still wear one in certain situations like crowded indoor shops, the same places I put a mask on my toddler. It'll be nice to stop the daftness of wearing them at outdoor nursery drop-off, walking between tables in an outdoor pub beer garden etc.

HildegardeCrowe · 24/06/2021 08:58

I hate the bloody things and can’t wait until I can breathe again properly in the supermarket. I find it hilarious that people are still wearing them outside. Time to move on from this shit although I’m sure that the Covid embracers will be whinging for a long time yet.

Glenthebattleostrich · 24/06/2021 08:59

When the restrictions are removed feel free to continue wearing your masks. I'm just looking forward to not being called a selfish granny killer because i cant wear one.
