Despite more than 80,000 (or 90% of) Delta cases in the UK being found in under-50s, only eight under-50s have died with Delta. None of them were double vaccinated.
It’s a reminder of the basic truths of coronavirus: your risk of serious harm is much lower if you’re younger and lower still if you have the protection of vaccination.
But the data for older adults are a reminder of why we worry about the spread of the virus.
There’s far less spread of Delta in older adults (about 10,000 cases) but they run a higher risk of dying. So if the virus runs riot, it could eventually find the vulnerable and cause significant harm.
Nearly half of the 109 Delta deaths in over-50s are among those who had been doubled jabbed.
That may seem like a lot, but more than 90% of over-50s have been double vaccinated and we’d expect them to account for 90% of deaths if the vaccine wasn’t doing its work.
