We have three and a half weeks for one school and four and a half for the other. Praying we can make it that long! First time a school within 20 miles of home has been shut. The village Facebook groups are imploding.

hugoagogo · 23/06/2021 07:06

A doctor on the BBC this morning is saying that the school isolations need to stop. It's the first time I have heard anyone say anything like it, it feels like a turning point.Smile

@hugoagogo that’s good! I really think if a bubble bursts, just test everyone in that bubble and if they’re all negative surely no need to isolate. This 10 day thing is crazy

Good news in the Times today apparently which I really hope is true:

‘According to the Times, all remaining lockdown restrictions, including social distancing, face masks and the guidance to work from home are on track to be lifted on 19 July. The paper says the government has been encouraged by the low number of coronavirus deaths recently. After rules are lifted, the emphasis will be on "personal responsibility", a government source says, and people will be advised to wear masks in certain circumstances.‘

Apparently night clubs etc are also set to reopen. Let’s hope cases continue to slow and that deaths and hospitalisation continues to stay low

BessMarvin · 23/06/2021 10:48

It's all sounding good but what I'd like to hear about is when is all the testing and isolating and everything like that going to end? Presumably it's not going to be forever? But it doesn't get mentioned like opening things up does. It's really stressful particularly when you have small children who always come down with things.

I didn't see this so I'm not sure exactly what the detail was?
worriedmother1 · 23/06/2021 11:01

@BessMarvin this is what I'd like to know too. I don't even mind if the person with symptoms has to isolate until negative test, but my husband having to have two days off work every time one of the children gets a temperature is not going to be sustainable.

Oldtimer2020 · 23/06/2021 11:21

I’ve actually written an e mail to my MP asking if instead of isolations could the kids do LFTs for 10 days (as I thought had already been suggested). I’d happily do that if it meant my kids were in school. Maybe we should all lobby our MPs?

Well amen to that! I’m so sick of our children paying the price for this. I’m absolutely raging this morning that I can go to watch my daughters sports day OUTSIDE yet we’re apparently allowing 2,500 people to travel into the UK with no quarantine to watch the f football.

Beggars belief really.

Unfortunately there just doesn't seem to be anything. Hopefully they will decide to address this soon

If isolation ends in favour of testing that will be wonderful. The constant fear of isolation is exhausting and so damaging to the kids

Am in Scotland where there has been a massive jump in cases today, so it was helpful to see this tweet from Devi Sridhar, which puts things in perspective:

A comment on that thread says with 16000 UK cases today that level of infection can not be good though can it especially with the risk of mutations. I think she’s being a little dismissive of the numbers without taking into account the risks of long covid and the fact more cases = the higher the risk those double vaxxed vulnerable are to vaccine failure.

herecomesthsun · 23/06/2021 17:44

more than 60% adults fully vaccinated (& over 75 million doses given in the UK altogether) - good to hear!

Cafeaulait27 · 23/06/2021 18:09

They were very optimistic in the briefing today, saying they think the jump in cases is just due to the surge testing in Scotland and is just a blip.

They seem to be very reassured on the figures particularly hospitalisation and deaths, I’m hopeful for July 19th 🤞

The cynic in me thinks the optimism is to quell people’s concerns over the 180k fans visiting Wembley over the 3 Euros games. They can hardly stand there and say the rise is concerning we need to be cautious whilst allowing these games to go ahead.

If the cases continue on their current trajectory then they are going to find themselves in a tricky predicament in justifying the go ahead for football.

Cafeaulait27 · 24/06/2021 04:34

@Thewiseoneincognito yeah, I can see that being the case sadly 😔 I really hope you’re wrong, but think you might be right!

TheChineseChicken · 24/06/2021 07:45

I don't see how they can be so confident 3.5 weeks out, when last time they didn’t ‘see anything in the data to suggest a delay’ until about a week before. So I’m going to ignore these assertions and just hope for the best! It might be time for me to stop looking at the news again soon so I don’t see any numbers that scare me Grin

Cafeaulait27 · 24/06/2021 07:57

@TheChineseChicken I might have to do the same thing! I’m so scared of being disappointed again come July ☹️

There used to be a Good News thread on here, free from the gloomy speculation that is to be found on hundreds of other Mumsnet threads.

Does anyone know where it's gone?

Cafeaulait27 · 24/06/2021 10:16

@amicissimma haha yeah please let’s bring it back!!

Anyone got any good news??

From Twitter:

Anecdotally, covid hospital stays have got shorter. Let's see if this fits with the data for England.

Spoiler: It does.

It looks like, compared to winter:

  • shorter stays currently lead to ~25% fewer covid occupied beds
  • this % is slowly increasing

Fluffy kitten - quick !

We must take comfort in vaccination numbers/low admissions/deaths.
