Cafeaulait27 - I agree that's a good BBC piece.

ILookAtTheFloor · 06/07/2021 08:25

I saw the headline on the BBC and I knew it would be Nick Triggle again!

He's such a measured journo and I love his balanced pieces.

Cafeaulait27 · 06/07/2021 08:52

He’s very calming isn’t he!

A lot of people didn’t actually watch the briefing and don’t understand the reasons why we’re doing this in the summer - it’s quite frustrating but I guess that’s just how it is! I’m WFH so it’s easy for me to just pop the briefings on my phone if I’m still working or put the TV on. I find it really helpful to understand their rationale for the steps they’re taking.

carolinesbaby · 06/07/2021 09:02

I can't watch a 5pm briefing, it just doesn't work around work, and being Mum's Taxi.
I will be honest and say I am struggling to keep up with it all.

Cafeaulait27 · 06/07/2021 09:12

@Reachersloveinterest understandable!

Bordois · 06/07/2021 09:49

I think we've spent so long being screamed at told that restrictions (no matter how minor or nonsensical they seemed) were necessary to save lives that its now a big adjustment mentally to having to go without them. Hence some of the reaction to it on here, which was massively polarised at the best of times!

I agree, project fear just worked too well. Being someone that's fascinated with numbers I've always looked at the numbers behind the stories, and been shocked at some of the inconsistencies (such as the first peak not actually being directly linked to the first lockdown but rather in the change of behaviour the week before). I knew I wasn't high risk, despite approaching 50 (and am pretty sure I has it Christmas 19 anyway). Plus being unable to wear a mask means that I don't have the fear of suddenly being unmasked.

NEWS now: Javid says from 16 August fully-vaccinated people will no longer have to isolate after contact with infected person

(Thought it'd be from 19th July, )

EasterIssland · 06/07/2021 12:45

Javid says if anyone gets their second dose just before or after 16 August, they will have to wait two weeks until this new rule applies to them.

EasterIssland · 06/07/2021 12:48

Javid says under-18s who have contact with positive case will also no longer have to isolate from 16 August

carolinesbaby · 06/07/2021 12:58

Any sign of anything about post-travel quarantine....?

Indeed.

Some of the ridiculous 'mitigations' being asked for to keep schools open - they knew they wouldn't happen so effectively meant close schools or part time blended blah blah blah. So much hysteria.

no, think this is coming days
Wherediditgo · 06/07/2021 18:20

I’ve just looked at my town’s stats…

Over 850/100k of cases!!!

BUT… there have been NO deaths since March and hospitalisations for University Hospitals Birmingham (local trust) are actually declining (55 in the last week)

This feels like good news!

Bordois · 06/07/2021 18:32

@Bordois

Rate of growth has dropped too - down to 53% from 74% last week. Although I'm not reading too much into that at the moment!
Down again to 49% today!

Scotland looks to be a lot better these last few days - steady drop in cases.

Wales on the rise unfortunately but it looks like cases spike up rapidly and then atart dropping after a couple of weeks. Will be interesting to see if the pattern holds!

PomRuns · 06/07/2021 18:35

@Reachersloveinterest I read it's tomorrow.
I've hovering about booking a week in Portugal.

My city stats

Cases: 98 today 161/100k
Deaths: none since 14th april
Hospitalisations: 1 admission 14 in hospital

(whole trust so 3 large hospitals)

EasterIssland · 06/07/2021 19:07

Cases 312 mainly young. 391/100k
Hospitals 12 in hospital. 1 in ventilation
Deaths 1. We had one in June and last time was April

EasterIssland · 06/07/2021 19:07

Sorry that’s where I live.

twinmum86 · 06/07/2021 19:36

@twinmum86

Thank you for the link :)

It doesn't mention about if a household member has say a temperature will the rest of the household still need to isolate, that's a big one for working parents!

And as if to prove my point one of my children has a temperature and so my husband can't go to work Sad

Still on the plus side at least this time the test site is only 25 minutes away as opposed to the 1hr15 we had to do last time

BessMarvin · 06/07/2021 20:38

It's so hard isn't it because small children do just get temperatures a lot. Hope it is nothing serious and the result comes through quickly.

Gigitree · 07/07/2021 07:19

@Bordois @EasterIssland how are you finding your town’s stats?

On the coronavirus website at the top it says uk. You can change it to your city

RockaLock · 07/07/2021 09:01

In my large London Borough (almost 400,000 population) we currently have 16 people in hospital with (but not necessarily because of) covid. 1 death in the last 7 days.

The delta variant is definitely dominant around here, but the local NHS hardly seems overwhelmed!
