Filthy face mask

Saw a woman today in the supermarket wearing a disposable face mask that was visibly filthy. Her clothes looked clean and presentable. I don't understand why anyone would put something dirty next to their face. Strange.

OP posts:

It's just an extra thing to remember and if you wear makeup they're dirty as soon as you put them on.

Weirdly, I don't sling my pants in my handbag when I exit the Aldi. That's the difference.

Surely you take them off eventually though?

This is my opinion too, it’s covering mucous membranes! Like your pants! I can’t believe people will happily have a soggy breath-and-germ ridden mask over their own face rather than just wash it

It is their own breath and their own germs.

Yes, it’s a build up of their own breath and germs. Like a toothbrush. Or a facecloth. Or pants.
Getyourarseofffthequattro · 14/06/2021 20:21

Yes, at home, not when I am out and about. It's different.

If I wore my mask all day and literally didn't take it off until I was getting changed it would likely get thrown in the wash with my other clothes but I don't so.....

RoseRedRoseBlue · 14/06/2021 20:23

Wouldn’t it be nice if people just concerned themselves with their own behaviour? The last few months seem to have given licence to every nosey parker in the land.

LadyCatStark · 14/06/2021 20:23

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

She probably forgot to take one, and had to scramble for whatever she has in her handbag or in the car.

I’ve been there.

Haven’t we all! You have to wear one so what are you meant to do when you forget it?

Absolutely. I'm not buying a disposable one, and I've survived so far with the minging ones.

Tanfastic · 14/06/2021 20:28

@OliveTree75

Mine get covered in make up. I don't wear a clean one everytime. I really don't care though, i think they are pointless and I only wear them because i have to.

Same, I wear one because I have to, it's only my grubby face.

XenoBitch · 14/06/2021 20:30

And none of those affect other people. I do not understand why OP has their knickers (freshly clean I assume) in a twist over someone with a "filthy mask". Chances are, mask got soiled in their bag. Could well have been clean when they left the house.

The point isn’t about how it affects other people, those who don’t wash them don’t believe them to be effective anyway. The point was it’s a minging germ-incrusted, mucous-membrane soggy bit of fabric that people are putting on their own face again and again and again instead of simply washing it.
Getyourarseofffthequattro · 14/06/2021 20:49

Oh yeah, when I remember, when I chuck all the receipts out of my handbag but not every time I wear it.

ineedaholidaynow · 14/06/2021 20:58

I must admit I find it strange that some people seem to be proud of the fact they don't wash their mask as a sort of protest about wearing a mask. Why be proud that you are manky

lljkk · 14/06/2021 21:00

MN is full of highly anxious people.
Does that anxiety go with having OP's blessed "self respect"?
I just think there might be a connection...

I would like to make some people explode pick up masks I find on ground, stuff in a random pocket, & wash them at home -- mostly cloth but the odd disp. too. Hate the waste. I wouldn't respect myself if I didn't try to reduce the waste. I think those might be the only masks I've ever washed.

I like to, when I go swimming, pick up other people’s discarded plasters and take them home, dry them and put them on my own veruccas with sellotape. I too wouldn’t respect myself if I didn’t reduce other people’s medical waste.
lljkk · 14/06/2021 21:13

Cool Pumper. You're so clever!

You should weave plasters out of home-grown lentils, though, haven't you read up on that?

I haven’t but I will!

Often I look through the sanitary bin and if there are any pads that look barely-used I take them home too! Quick wash and a go on the line and they’re good as new!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/06/2021 21:17

I wear a mask because I have to, no other reason.

I do a wash once a week so sometimes I run out of clean masks and I struggle with disposable ones so I wear whatever comes to hand. Other times I've forgotten my mask so I end up wearing something that's been at the bottom of my bag or screwed up in the car for a while as it's that or nothing.

Joeblack066 · 14/06/2021 21:35

@Alleycat02

Any face mask that's been worn for more than a few seconds is filthy anyway, disgusting things and utterly useless so I can't really blame her. Really hoping we won't be forced to wear them for much longer!
Why are they useless?
Pumperthepumper · 14/06/2021 21:42

I think everyone is wearing them because we have to, I doubt anyone is overjoyed at having to wear them.
