Filthy face mask

esterwin · 14/06/2021 00:40

Saw a woman today in the supermarket wearing a disposable face mask that was visibly filthy. Her clothes looked clean and presentable. I don't understand why anyone would put something dirty next to their face. Strange.

@esterwin

And yes I do judge people who wear filthy face masks. I am thankful that my friends have more self respect.
I think you may need to ask yourself why someone you don't know, doing something that has absolutely no impact on you, whilst they are actually following the law, affects you so badly Flowers
Regularsizedrudy · 14/06/2021 11:39

She probably forgot and made do with an old one left in the car. Get a hobby.

XenoBitch · 14/06/2021 11:41

Simple solution to hating seeing certain things in public.... don't bloody look!
Get on with your shopping and the rest of your day.

Bobholll · 14/06/2021 11:41

I confess, my masks live in the car & get washed maybe once a month. I’m still here to tell the tale.

esterwin · 14/06/2021 11:44

@BellaintheWychElm Who says it affects me?
Are you really saying you never judge anyone?
If someone is filty overall I tend to assume there are other issues at play. But if they are generally clean and wearing a filthy mask then it is a choice. And yes a disgusting one.

I think a lot of people just wear masks that are too small for them. They are more prone to be uncomfortable, get grubby because you are constantly having to adjust them, get sweaty because they are too close to your mouth and nose, etc etc.

I got some of the London Transport Museum ones, which are much bigger - and consequently much more comfortable, and fit more over the mouth and nose, and up to the ears (ie being effective as a barrier) without being tight over your mouth and getting wet.

When I get home the first thing I do is kick off my shoes, walk straight into the bathroom, wash my hands, and then use hot water and regular soap to wash and rinse out my facemask. They then hang up and are dry for the next day.

tl;dr if your facemasks are uncomfortable, sweaty and grubby, you are using the wrong facemasks. And disposable ones are shit.

I also don't understand the whole 'I don't wash it because I dont believe it works'

Who cares what you believe, why would you put wear something filthy against your face? It's surely on par with clean knickers, right?

TheSockMonster · 14/06/2021 11:49

Meh. It was doing its job.

I keep a stash of disposable masks in my car and my purse. Sometimes they get crushed or grubby etc, but if it’s only cosmetic so they get worn.

For some reason conflation of cleanliness and respectability always reminds me of 1950s working class housewives competitively scrubbing their doorsteps ConfusedGrin

Who cares what other people are putting next to their face? Clearly this lady was fine with her dirty mask.

I judge you hth Wink

RocheLobe · 14/06/2021 13:19

I don’t have a great deal of choice about food stains or even snot stains on my top. I have a 1yo. I don’t take a change of clothes out for myself so I could easily be going about with her smears on me. This isn’t unusual when you’re in charge of toddlers.

RocheLobe · 14/06/2021 13:23

I do wash my facemasks, but i don’t care what others do. I don’t really understand the “respectful” thing. What has respecting me got to do with other people wearing pyjamas to the supermarket? Am I not showing enough respect to supermarket employees by having my 1yo’s snot on my shoulder? I shouldn’t think they even care.

GalesThisMorning · 14/06/2021 13:25

@XenoBitch it looks as if we both care about this topic enough to write a sentence or two about it on mumsnet Grin

It won't keep me up for long tonight though Wink

roobicoobi · 14/06/2021 13:26

Willies have poo on them?

esterwin · 14/06/2021 14:08

@RocheLobe everyone understands that.

It si not about not respecting others, being clean is just about self-respect.

Since when has other people's self-respect been any of your business?
BruceAndNosh · 14/06/2021 14:35

Why be so proud of never washing your mask?

Underwear is not required by law, but I bet you all wash your knickers every now and then

Blossomtoes · 14/06/2021 14:54

Don't you all get spotty faces? Isn't it a bit smelly?

No and no. My face isn’t going to develop spots from 30 minutes a week nor does it smell.

People like me don’t voluntarily go places that demand masks. I put the vile thing on at the supermarket door and rip it off the minute I leave. Everywhere else will continue to miss out on my money until they’re no longer required.

RocheLobe · 14/06/2021 15:07
@RocheLobe everyone understands that.
Well not really, your very next post tells me I have no self-respect!

BoomChicka · 14/06/2021 17:42

Well OP, on the strength of your judgment over non pristine masks, I'm going to bin mine and stop wearing them altogether. Thanks for the kick up the bum.

This is my opinion too, it’s covering mucous membranes! Like your pants! I can’t believe people will happily have a soggy breath-and-germ ridden mask over their own face rather than just wash it.
katkit · 14/06/2021 19:01

Maybe it’s a dirty protest.

sashagabadon · 14/06/2021 19:10

I forgot mine this morning, got to tube platform and remembered so fished in hand bag and luckily found an old pretty dirty one so put it on. I’d rather have not bothered at all and if I forget again I won’t bother.
I bet that lady feels the same way

cappuccinoandcats · 14/06/2021 19:29

Man gets on my bus every morning with one of those paper masks with the elastic fastening. Visibly brown stained. Same disposable mask every day for months 🤢
