Could not agree more with Theresa May, never thought I'd say it.

Sorry for Twitter link, all news links behind paywalls.

Same.

Call it India / Delta / Johnson. Doesn't change the fact that there are 7 billion other humans and more than a couple of animal reservoirs all capable of incubating variants. Even with 100% vaccination we will still be capable of incubating our own further variants.

In the latest research Delta has completely usurped Kent as the dominant UK variant and now makes up 90% of cases. The Yorkshire variant seems to have gone by the board and in Glasgow Delta cases are on the wane. It seems unlikely vaccines will ever keep up with mutations, just as they don't with flu.

Waiting for someone to suggest we barricade Edinburgh just in case we end up with a Festival variant.

TinaYouFatLard · 12/06/2021 11:28

She nails it.

TheKeatingFive · 12/06/2021 11:30

Perfectly put. Time to be pragmatic.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/06/2021 11:32

I completely agree with her and I believe she and Jeremy Hunt would have handled the pandemic much better than Johnson and Hancock

strangeshapedpotato · 12/06/2021 11:34

Even with 100% vaccination we will still be capable of incubating our own further variants.

Clearly the entire concept of herd immunity has flown a few million miles above your head.

IGotFat · 12/06/2021 11:34

my cats could have handled the pandemic better then Johnson and Hancock Grin

Yes, I agree with that too. I'm no fan of Theresa May - far from it - but I do believe that she is motivated by a genuine sense of public duty. Unlike Boris, who is motivated by his ego alone. Hmm
Polkadotties · 12/06/2021 11:36

Agree with every word she has said. It’s gone viral (pardon the pun)

AlecTrevelyan006 · 12/06/2021 11:39

Basically this.

1 we can’t eradicate Covid
2 there will always be variants
3 sadly some people will die

Therefore it’s crazy that one of the most vaccinated countries in the world is the most reluctant to ease restrictions

jgw1 · 12/06/2021 11:39

So could mine and I don't have any.
MummyPop00 · 12/06/2021 11:42

& let’s not forget she is saying this as a T1 diabetic.

Katie517 · 12/06/2021 11:46

She’s spot on and would have got us through this a lot better than Boris and his bunch of lockdown loving cronies!

QioiioiioQ · 12/06/2021 11:54

If only we had a grown up like Theresa at the helm
Instead of Boris Ken Dodd Johnson

HairyFloppins · 12/06/2021 12:19

Agree with her. My sister's new grandchild is going to be grown up by the time we are allowed to travel.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 12/06/2021 12:22

Totally agree with her and wish she was still running the country! (And I don't vote Tory)

Frazzled2207 · 12/06/2021 12:22

she's spot on BUT neglecting the elephant in the room which is that we're only in the pickle we're in right now because the government was so slow stopping people coming in from India DESPITE us having one of the most strictest anti-travel policies in the world.

Loubellbell · 12/06/2021 12:23

Hate to say it as I loved Boris but you are right !

Clearly the entire concept of herd immunity has flown a few million miles above your head.

Is that directed at me?

I thought the party line was that you could still carry and pass the virus if vaccinated (and therefore create variants), hence the scare tactics on social distancing? Or is that just bullshit?

QioiioiioQ · 12/06/2021 12:26

Presumably all the mutations which the virus acquires are inherent to the virus and therefore can and will arise in any population?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/06/2021 12:29

It’s crazy that one of the most vaccinated countries in the world is the most reluctant to ease restrictions

Crazy, yes, but utterly predictable
It's been interesting to read the thread about how other nations are coping, and as I've said from the start the UK were always going to be the ones dragging their feet, prioritising cronies and looking for another committee to form while others started to move forward

MonsterMash2210 · 12/06/2021 12:35

This is what I have really struggled with.

If zero Covid is not possible/ sustainable.

If the vaccine is not enough to eradicate Covid.

If there will always be variants of Covid forever and ever until the end of time.

What on earth is the end goal? When can we consider ourselves ‘safe’ or even ‘safe enough’?

I do not want to live like this forever. When is the point when we say enough is enough, we need to just take the risk.

Bewareoftheblob · 12/06/2021 12:39

When is the point when we say enough is enough, we need to just take the risk.

Now. We've rolled over for a year and it needs to stop. Vaccinate everyone, fine, but enough of the restrictions on normal freedom.

@PinkSparklyPussyCat I don't agree that Theresa May and Jeremy Hunt would have handled the pandemic better. I know and would think it a fact they would have handled it better.

newnortherner111 · 12/06/2021 12:48

We need to get to the point where it is an inconvenient illness not one that puts you in hospital or kills you. Which I think vaccination can do.

As for restrictions, wearing a face covering and not having Old Trafford or any other sports stadia completely full for a few months more, and having screens at supermarket tills I think are reasonable to continue.
