The "admitted with" Vs "caught it in hospital" split is a different thing from whether or not someone's reason for being in hospital is Covid though. Some admissions may be with Covid rather than because of it, and some of those who catch it there may become very ill from it so stay longer for that reason. The NHS were supposed to be getting data sorted to distinguish who is in hospital because of it, but AFAIK that's not been done yet.

ILookAtTheFloor · 21/06/2021 18:21

They test everyone every 2 days during a hospital stay, these people could be asymptomatic for all we know.

Obviously it'll still be a burden managing a covid + person, having to isolate etc but they may not be actually ill with covid.

WeirdArchitecture · 21/06/2021 18:52

@EndoplasmicReticulum

Interesting about the hospital transmission

"About a third of the patients are thought to have caught the virus after being admitted, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said."

Has that been the case throughout, do we know? Figures for people "admitted with something else but also have covid, or catch it once in" as compared with "admitted because of covid".

Can only give one data point - my mum had stopped eating and her organs were failing last November, was admitted to hospital testing negative for covid.

Within 2 days she tested positive having caught it in hospital, showed no symptoms and had no respiratory distress. She later passed away due to her existing condition and the cause of death on her certificate is covid 19.

We never quite knew how to parse that, but were told it was a frequent thing. She didn't die 'of covid' at all, but went into the figures regardless.

Obviously due to this being a personal loss for us, we have been curious to what extent this happens.

Sunshinegirl82 · 21/06/2021 18:58

Yes the hospital data is frustrating.

During the initial wave there wasn't sufficient testing to test everyone in hospital regularly so only people with classic COVID symptoms would have been tested but I'm assuming the numbers we have are likely to be a significant underestimate.

Now with mass testing there will be people admitted to hospital because they are ill from covid, people who are admitted to hospital for a completely unrelated reason and then test positive but remain asymptomatic/are only mildly unwell, people who are admitted for some other reason and then test positive and subsequently become unwell due to covid etc, etc.

I suspect the second category could make up more of the total now more people are vaccinated.

I'm not sure that a nebulous figure that lumps together all the various permutations is that helpful at all unless I'm missing something (which is entirely possible!)

How do they know caught it in hospital means actually caught it in hospital though? Obviously if you get one positive case and then watch the outbreak spread round the ward then it's different. Similarly if the patient has been in hospital for weeks. But the definition of 'caught it in hospital' can't possibly be tested negative on admission, but subsequently tested positive. That would be ludicrous.

Rates in Durham city are crazy.

Something like 1600 ish per 100,000

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 21/06/2021 19:04

My fault, I missed the crucial sentence. It's 7 days. I'd guess that's still a slight overcount on the number of cases that are acquired in hospital.

I don't think it's many, particularly as anyone ill enough to be in hospital for 7 days probably weren't spending their previous days widely mixing.

Anecdata but lots of students are testing positive in Durham at the moment, we've heard the same about Bristol.
boys3 · 21/06/2021 19:22

Some updated graphs on latest 7 day rate and the movement as compared with the previous 7 day period. The movement is the absolute change in the rate not a percentage change. Thus somewhere that was 5 per 100,000 and is now 10; has a movement of 5 as opposed to 100%; and somewhere that has moved from 200 to 300 has a movement of 100, as opposed to 50%.

The x axis is therefore the latest rate and the y axis the extent of the movement.

Based on a 2 day lag, which with spec dats starting to stretch out a little, I may need to consider reviewing. But that's what it is for now.

After the wholly unacceptable aberration last time round first up is East of England UTLAs - which have quite a few downward moves. They do not however set the tone for all that will follow.

Looking at the map for Leeds, it's like the autumn again. The areas of Leeds that house students in halls and houses are purple.
