Anyone else get a flare up of cold sores after the vaccine?

I had Pfizer and within 7 days that tingling on my lips arrived and a big break out

Not had a cold sore for over 20 years!

Anyone else? I'd imagine it's some post-viral reaction if this is common place and not a total coincidence?

Me! Had my first one in 4-5 years after AZ.

LemonandGingerTeafor2 · 09/06/2021 12:09

Yes I did had 3 at the same time. Then just as they had gone got another 4.
I had to get Aciclovir tablets from my GP to ease them off

MaloInAnAppleTree · 09/06/2021 12:09

Yes I had five (!) crop up immediately after first dose of AZ.

hamstersarse · 09/06/2021 12:19

Odd

I feel even more of an experimental guinea pig now!

Yes I did after my first Astra Zeneca vaccine. About a week later I got one, then seemed to keep getting another for about 6 weeks.

anon12345678901 · 09/06/2021 12:27

I got one but was expecting something. Cold sores occur from a weakened immune system if you have the virus, as you had the vaccine to trigger antibodies, your immune system was lower than normal. Nothing to worry about.

chipsandpeas · 09/06/2021 12:28

nope not for me

DNTSleepingDragons · 09/06/2021 12:30

Nope. All of my family suffer from cold sores and none of us had one after either of our jabs. That’s ten people.

N0tfinished · 09/06/2021 12:32

My friend had AZ #2 and has broken out in cold sores. I'm not sure if she's prone to them ordinarily

MaloInAnAppleTree · 09/06/2021 12:44

Yes it’s not remotely surprising that if you get symptoms triggering your immune system you break out in cold sores. It was worse than I expected but the fact that it happened was not surprising at all.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 09/06/2021 12:52

Odd

I don't think it's anything weird tbh. Lots,of people get cold sites when run down, and the vaccine does cause most people to feel rough for a few days.

I also wonder whether lockdown is a factor - maybe our immune systems are out of practice and have gone a bit more haywire as a result? I'm not a virologist though so could very well be talking bollocks.

Foxhasbigsocks · 09/06/2021 12:53

Me! Literally previously hadn’t had one for 15 years!!

NamiSwan · 09/06/2021 12:55

Nope. I get cold sores every couple of years but didn't get any after my Pfizer jab.

Foxhasbigsocks · 09/06/2021 12:55

Actually sorry - just checked date and the above is fake news. It was actually just before the vaccine. So must have been lockdown stress!!

barbrahunter · 09/06/2021 12:57

I did with the first AZ jab but not with the 2nd. I am prone to them anyway so I wasn't surprised.

Sunbird24 · 09/06/2021 13:00

I’m prone to cold sores in times of stress, but the jab didn’t bring one on for me. Hadn’t even thought that could be a thing so I’m very glad, but every sympathy for those who have got them. I recommend aciclovir tablets and compeed cold sore patches!

WhoKnew19 · 09/06/2021 13:03

Yep, haven't had one in 20+ years but still broke out after the AZ vaccine. Still happy to have been able to have the vaccine though!

Watercoloursky · 09/06/2021 13:35

I've just had my first one in ages, and also had Pfizer, but the cold sore came on a good couple of weeks after my jab, so probably a coincidence - it's also when the weather began to improve, and my coldsores are sometimes triggered by very sunny weather, so just as likely to be that!

Northernmum100 · 09/06/2021 13:43

Not cold sores but had Shingles around 10 days after my first vaccination. Last episode of Shingles was around 30 years ago!

Shodan · 09/06/2021 14:01

Ohhhhh.

That might explain the sudden rash of cold sores I've had! I have been a bit run down generally, but take l-lycine regularly , which normally 'covers' me . But then four, one after another, which has never happened before. (Luckily for me I get them on my lower back, rather than on my mouth) I had the Astra jab.

It never occurred to me, tbh , so good to know that could've been a cause.

lakesummer · 09/06/2021 14:29

No.
Neither or I had this side effect despite having them in the past.

hamstersarse · 09/06/2021 14:30

On googling this, I’d seen some talk on shingles reoccurring @Northernmum100 in people after the vaccine.

Tiddleandplonk · 09/06/2021 16:39

Yes . Loads !

RedcurrantPuff · 09/06/2021 19:04

Thankfully not, but I’ve had them every few weeks since we started having to wear masks.

RedcurrantPuff · 09/06/2021 19:05

What I did get is gout, and severe nerve pain in my face, I reported it as a yellow card event but who knows.
