Could you do the 10 day Hotel quarantine?

BoeJidensLeftShoe · 07/06/2021 18:29

Been waiting for a surgery for over a year now. Am sick of rescheduling.

Am thinking of just doing the quarentine when back but am worried about the mental health side ontop of the fact I will be dealing with big changes from surgery.

not understanding your situation, OP

I would hate house arrest for 10 days, but maybe needs must

BikeRunSki · 07/06/2021 19:17

@BoeJidensLeftShoe, are you considering going abroad for your surgery?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 07/06/2021 19:37

I would do it for a funeral or the chance to say goodbye to a close loved one. Not for a holiday as not worth it.
It would depend on the surgery for me, presumably it’s elective as not being done in own country so it would depend how urgent, the likelihood of complications, the cases in the country you are going to and if it’s still worth the cost of hotel quarantine.

katienana · 07/06/2021 19:38

I could do it alone but wouldn't do it with kids unless for vvv good reason!

MaloInAnAppleTree · 07/06/2021 19:40

Does it have to be in a red-zone country not an amber-zone?

Horst · 07/06/2021 19:41

If the children where with dh and I had good internet yeah I think I’d do it. Look at it like a break and time to recoup and recover and just meh.

jumpbounce · 07/06/2021 19:50

Without kids yes. It hadn't crossed my mind yet to travel to a red list country....but now I'm thinking hotel quarantine for 10 days with no children sounds quite appealing Grin

denverRegina · 07/06/2021 19:51

You're thinking of travelling for surgery you mean?

No, I wouldn't at the moment.

covidandborisandworld · 07/06/2021 19:54

Yes if I was at home for it Not in a quarantine hotel tho. No way.

feesh · 07/06/2021 19:54

No. I live in a red zone country and have heard some absolute horror stories coming back from those who have done it. The security guards are treating people like prisoners and behave towards the quarantinees as if they have done something wrong and deserve to be punished. The food is mostly dreadful and in some hotels you are genuinely lucky to get fed at normal mealtimes with anything remotely edible.

It’s not all bad; but it’s such a gamble as to where you end up, and when it’s bad it’s REALLY bad.

Also there is no social distancing in the red list terminal at Heathrow and you spend a lot of hours waiting around in enclosed spaces for the coaches, and when on the coaches. So a lot of people who have done it have contracted coronavirus from other travellers (also in the hotel, for daily exercise, they tend to take people down in groups in the lift - as you have to be accompanied by security guards for your daily walk) which is another Covid risk.

It’s just not worth it. Go via an amber country instead if you can and recuperate in the warm sun.

BelleBlueBell · 07/06/2021 19:54

So the surgery is in a red list country?

I couldn't say without knowing what it was, isn't that the most important factor?

BoeJidensLeftShoe · 07/06/2021 20:33

It's bariatric surgery so I wouldn't be eating anyways! I would be on my own protein shakes so the food isn't an issue.

I would be in my own be on my own, no kids.

I think it could be quite nice. Take a lot of books. Netflix. Music.

I've not had a child free night in yearssss

It is elective surgery yes but I've been waiting for years :(

OP posts:
BoeJidensLeftShoe · 07/06/2021 20:34

Also even with 1750 Hotel quarantine costs the surgery would still be half the price of uk.

OP posts:
Horst · 07/06/2021 20:36

I mean if you look at it and are prepared for it being 10 days with no in person human interaction I’d go for it.

BoeJidensLeftShoe · 07/06/2021 20:52

I might wait until the next announcement then make a choice

OP posts:
SouthKoreaquestion · 07/06/2021 20:52

Given that the country is red list, isn't the big risk that you might contract Covid around the time you have surgery? Others can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Covid is much higher risk if you get it when you've just had surgery.

lljkk · 07/06/2021 20:55

Having seen lots episodes of "600 lb life" - I would want surgical after care in same country where I live. I would not be confident in good outcome without that.

Waveafterwaveslowlydrifting · 07/06/2021 20:55

I would do it but I like my own company and peace and quiet!

MadeOfStarStuff · 07/06/2021 21:02

I could do it if I had to, like if I had to travel for a funeral of a close family member. But I wouldn’t travel to a red list country for elective surgery and wouldn’t want to be in hotel quarantine recovering from surgery. I also would rather have surgery somewhere I could get aftercare from if there were complications

motogogo · 07/06/2021 21:03

I would if it was necessary. I wouldn't if I had underlying health issues though

Usernamenotallowed · 07/06/2021 21:03

No. I live abroad and won't be returning to visit family again this summer because I don't want to pay £3000 to spend 10 days of my holiday in a hotel room. I've also no desire to try and transit via an amber country as things keep changing too quickly. If it was for a funeral then I would consider it but only on my own, I wouldn't do it with kids.

BoeJidensLeftShoe · 07/06/2021 21:06

I'm fully vaccinated and have no underlying health issues bar my weight.

It might seem like elective surgery but my life's been on hold for 2 years over this. 4th reschedule and I just can't mentally draw it out any longer

OP posts:
Fitforforty · 07/06/2021 21:06

I would worry about DVT especially if you are overweight, have just had surgery and are confined to a room for 10 days.

BoeJidensLeftShoe · 07/06/2021 21:08

I will be given 10 days of injection bloodthinners and I would do exercises and 10k steps a day with my fitbit.

OP posts:
lljkk · 07/06/2021 21:30

ok, back to 600 lb life...
I guess you're excess weight is not as extreme as theirs, OP?

The folk on "600 lb..." get lots of careful checks before they qualify for surgery. The big thing is the many weeks of low fat diet to reduce fat in their liver this is important for making the surgery safe enough. Do you need to be in the country for a spell before surgery, OP, to make sure your liver is fat-reduced enough? Or for any other pre-surgery assessments how long would you be outside UK in total?

(maybe by then red list countries will be thing of past)
