Could you do the 10 day Hotel quarantine?

Been waiting for a surgery for over a year now. Am sick of rescheduling.

Am thinking of just doing the quarentine when back but am worried about the mental health side ontop of the fact I will be dealing with big changes from surgery.

I couldn't do it, am in Australia and parents in UK and I have completely ruled out visiting while I'd still have to quarantine. I was thinking about it when we were staying in a hotel in January, I just couldn't cope without being able to get outside. By 9am after my 1st night I was pushing DP to get up and out as was feeling antsy already, no way could I spend 10 days inside, the thought makes me feel ill.

NameyNameyNameChangey · 09/06/2021 01:53

I could do it easily with a laptop and TV etc.
But I'm a loner.

Cashewsauce · 09/06/2021 05:45

Yes I could easily do it as long as I had my ipad and data for streaming its only 10 days. Good luck with your surgery!

fallfallfall · 09/06/2021 05:53

Not sure where you’ll find the info but where I live the list of exemptions to bypass hotel quarantine is extensive. Ours was well hidden on the gov web site with the link three pages in type situation.
It was a massive list, I’m sure the UK has similar.

Borderterrierpuppy · 09/06/2021 06:06

Yes I would in your circumstances, good luck with the surgery. A friend had it done in Poland last year and is transforming before our eyes. She had also researched, her pre op work up was very thorough. One of the ladies she travelled with had a gastric inflammation and they sent her back without surgery on treatment and brought her back 6 months later.

Autumn101 · 09/06/2021 06:16

Do it OP, you’ve been waiting long enough already.

DH works in a red list country so has done 2 hotel quarantines - they’re a bit boring and lonely but fine. Last one he was allowed outside twice a day for a walk (went down alone, zero mixing with others), fresh sheets/towels whenever he wanted, fresh milk and fruit available 24/7. He also had some food delivery for a bit of variety but that won’t matter to you!

AlmostSummer21 · 09/06/2021 06:45

@BoeJidensLeftShoe

I've just looked them up Skye and unfortunately they are 2.5k more than Turkey which is 3k. It would take me a long time to save that much more.
Morning Stroppy!

If you deduct the cost of hotel quarantine, isn't the then small difference worth paying to be able to go hone?

WaterBottle123 · 09/06/2021 07:00

10 days alone with books and Netflix sounds glorious. I'd do it.

SimonJT · 09/06/2021 07:05

No, especially not after surgery.

My husband had to go abroad for major surgery in August, he remained there for three weeks so if any complications arose he was near to his medical team for fast and good quality medical treatment. He also needed to be fit enough to fly home on his own, I don’t know about now, but in August there wasn’t any airport assistance etc, so he needed to be able to handle his own suitcase etc. He came home after three weeks as he was allowed to quarantine at home, if he had needed a quarantine hotel he wouldn’t have returned for around six weeks, as it took that long for him to be able to independently wash, dress etc.

One thing (and sorry if you posted this and I missed it), how will you manage your diet in the ten days of hotel quarantine? What are the specific procedures in place if you need medical attention etc?

wombatspoopcubes · 09/06/2021 08:17

Are you doing 10k steps now? If not, would it help to start doing those kind of things already while you wait for the surgery? Maybe creating the feeling of already starting with the bariatric weight loss plan (lets be honest, surgery is just the kickstart) might make the wait easier for you mentally speaking.

Good for you to try to make a change, and good luck.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 09/06/2021 08:36

The second I know I can’t leave somewhere, that’s all I want to do. I love being at home with nothing to do and nowhere to be but lockdowns and isolation periods change that instantly for me. Even just having to wait in for a delivery has me climbing the walls.

If the internet was good and I had my phone, iPad and some sort of project to do (painting by numbers or diamond art type project), I could get through it. I would also need plenty of snacks and treats though but maybe not so good after weight loss surgery...

Whatever you decide to do OP, I hope this surgery brings you the peace you’re looking for.

I do 10k steps everyday, I don't drive. I've also lost 16lbs on a low carb high protein diet in preparation for my surgery which was upposed to be next week

I would research the hotel thoroughly then, if happy, go for it. Sounds like you're 100% on the surgery and personally I'd be less likely to overdo it and so have an easier recovery away from DC

Coolerthanapolarbearstoenails · 09/06/2021 09:26

I would do it...

My only concern specifically about the quarantine is being able to get your steps in while confined to the room and should some other complications arise. I'm not sure how happy the paramedics would be coming to sort you out (obviously complete worse case scenario).

emmathedilemma · 09/06/2021 10:14

At home yes, in a hotel no. I walked past one of the hotels they are using for quarantine earlier in the week and there were people at the windows on the phone to their friends / relatives outside and people just standing at the windows (which don't even seem to open).
Also, what happens if you have any complications following the surgery?

Groovee · 09/06/2021 10:17

Doing the 14 days isolation before surgery in the last month really affected my husband. He went out yesterday for the first time post surgery and I can see a difference in him going for a coffee.

Not sure I could do it.

MrsNutNutsmarriedaphilanderer · 09/06/2021 10:26

I've read your posts but not all replies @BoeJidensLeftShoe

My question would be if you return and needed aftercare during the quarantine period would you potentially be putting UK health workers or other people in hospital at risk?

Also if you need to do exercise while in quarantine, how easy is that in a hotel room?

How much time in total would you be away from family for the surgery, post op care in other country then 10 days UK hotel quarantine? Especially if you've not had so much as a weekend away in years you will miss them like mad? Will you be using annual leave up as well as sick leave?

Good luck when you have the surgery, though personally I would wait until travel is easier and you can go directly home.

What if this happened and for some reason they can't operate & you got sent home without the op but had to pay £££ for quarantine?
Girlmama3 · 09/06/2021 10:58

I would love 10 days in a hotel by myself!! What a way to recharge your batteries!

I think if your mentally prepared for it and can handle being in one room after your surgery then go for it. Get books, puzzle books, a long phone charger and a Netflix list! Greys Anatomy is great and there are loads of them, This is Us on Prime is also fab.

You should also consider what would happen if you caught covid. Have you had both vaccines? Would having a bad cough effect your surgery?

1156903478124566s · 09/06/2021 11:37

I'm not going to give an opinion on the surgery as I don't know enough about the options but I would absolutely jump at the chance of 10 nights alone in a hotel!! I would have no concerns about how I would fill that amount of time.

June2021 · 09/06/2021 15:30

Easy to do the 10 days having done 4 months during the first lock down not going anywhere!

After surgery though - no idea how you might feel, pain, complications, infection etc
