Could you do the 10 day Hotel quarantine?

BoeJidensLeftShoe · 07/06/2021 18:29

Been waiting for a surgery for over a year now. Am sick of rescheduling.

Am thinking of just doing the quarentine when back but am worried about the mental health side ontop of the fact I will be dealing with big changes from surgery.

If you want to research gastric surgeries in other countries and the procedures please feel free to, I've spent literal years doing so and am VERY happy with my hospital, surgeon, the multiple meetings via zoom, the prep I am to do beforehand and the aftercare. Thankyou.
And no. I am NOWHERE near 600lbs Confused

I wouldn't do hotel quarantine if you paid me a million pounds. Or ten million pounds. If I needed surgery similar to yours and there was any choice at all I would beg, borrow and save to get the money to have the surgery in the UK and escape the quarantine.
Good luck whatever you decide.

Fitforforty · 08/06/2021 14:55

Have you tried to do 10K in one small room?

Overthebow · 08/06/2021 16:15

In your situation I would actually. Take lots of films and books and use it as a chance to exercise. Sounds like you really want the surgery and are prepaid to pay and spend the time in the hotel.

XenoBitch · 08/06/2021 16:29

There was a thread on here a while back by someone who was in hotel quarantine. They were offering to answer any questions anyone had about it. They did say there was a mental health professional there that would check in on people. It is always worth contacting the hotel you will be staying at though, and asking if they definitely have such a person there.

welshweasel · 08/06/2021 16:34

I think the quarantine in your situation would be fine. What I wouldn’t risk is 1) the chance of catching covid on the journey out there - in first wave covid we had a 25% mortality for patients who caught covid around the time of surgery, and 2) having such major surgery abroad is not a great idea - you won’t have any aftercare, you would be solely relying on the NHS (which isn’t always the best when it comes to bariatric complications, depending on where you live) and we know that people having surgery abroad do less well with complications (probs due to late presentation and no real ownership by a consultant). Having seen two young women die after bariatric surgery in Turkey, I wouldn’t do it. Bariatric surgery is in general a good thing, but get it done in the U.K.

Imkindreally · 08/06/2021 16:58

I’ve seen lots of discussion on a group I’m on and I genuinely feel awful for those who keep having to reschedule - however I’d be worried about being in a hotel rather than at home but can’t quite articulate why other than potentially at home you’d have another adult to keep an eye on you?

Ps if it’s to visit Dr T - I’m jealous Grin

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 08/06/2021 17:00

by myself? I'd love to!
gimme 10 days of peace and quiet someone, please!!!!

BoeJidensLeftShoe · 08/06/2021 17:01

Nothing is going to pursuade me not to get surgery abroad so there's no point in scaremongering.

woodfort · 08/06/2021 17:06

Surgery aside (because that brings up further questions like - would I be in pain alone without help?), I wouldn’t want to do it with kids but I honestly can’t see what would be so bad about being alone in a hotel room for 10 days. Probably the first few days would be quite enjoyable, then getting worse but not that bad at all.

exLtEveDallas · 08/06/2021 17:36

Surgery aside, yes I could happily do 10 days in a hotel room with my meals delivered etc. I’d read a lot of books, watch box sets and snooze a lot! I wouldn’t be bothered about not seeing anyone in that time, it’s only 10 days after all.

coffeerose · 08/06/2021 17:38

I'm currently staying 11 nights in Greece in a lovely hotel on my way back to the UK from the UAE. Then, once we n the UK, it's the same time quarantining at home as I've travelled from an amber country to red.
I'm in a 5* hotel on half board and with my business class flight from Athens to Heathrow it's still £300 cheaper than the hotel quarantine cost. Mic you could do that I would.
It's quiet where I am, beautiful scenery and gorgeous weather.

coffeerose · 08/06/2021 17:39

Should have added that I'm alone but perfectly content.

Tippexy · 08/06/2021 17:48

@BoeJidensLeftShoe you really need to hear from @RightYesButNo.

Tealightsandd · 08/06/2021 17:49

@Fitforforty

Have you tried to do 10K in one small room?
I do it regularly (with telly on in the background). DP finds my indoor steps distracting when he's watching TV on the sofa, so I'll go in our bedroom to do it.

I love getting outside for walks but it's good to keep moving even when at home.

I've also been confined to a small room for longer than 10 days - after an injury. It's frustrating but you get through it. Thank goodness for modern technology though! Telly, headphones, and internet, phone, and it's fine.

I'd be more concerned about flying so soon after surgery but that's presumably something OP has discussed with her doctors.

Remember also that, although thankfully rare, surgery can go wrong. Anyone having any type of surgery has to be prepared for the possibility of spending days in a hospital bed/room.

BoeJidensLeftShoe · 08/06/2021 17:58
**@BoeJidensLeftShoe* you really need to hear from @RightYesButNo*.
I'm assuming g that's someone who had surgery and it went wrong. Which is unfortunate.

But I've been in a group for 18 months now of ladies going over for surgery and out of all of them only 1 has had complications and that arose from an ulcerated hernia infection post surgery, the Dr's in UK confirmed it was nothing to do with the sleeve.

So as I sit and chat with 100 or so ladies who's journey I have followed over that last months and all of them say their only regret is to not have done it sooner then I am very secure in my choice, thankyou :)

RightYesButNo · 08/06/2021 18:43

No, I’m not someone who had surgery and had it go wrong. You say that no amount of scaremongering will stop you from getting surgery abroad and you’re comfortable with the research you’ve done and the Zoom meetings you’ve had with them. That’s fine because I’m not trying to scaremonger.

Your health is your choice. You’re right; no one can “talk you” into or out of that. The only thing the NHS truly offers that surgery abroad doesn’t is the psychological support. Only you know how you got overweight. People accuse the NHS of making them jump through hoops for bariatric surgery (lose a certain amount of weight first, have psycho-therapy, talk to a dietician), but these are all things to ensure success AFTER surgery. It sounds like you’ve been talking to a supportive group on Facebook, but how long ago did most of them have their surgeries abroad? Have they kept off all the weight they’ve lost for five years? Because a lot of people without support after surgery don’t, which is why the NHS supports you long after surgery.

The NHS has looked at the studies that basically said, “The surgery alone with no support isn’t good enough or long-lasting,” which is why they’re willing to “spend the money” on all the extras when they’re already cash-strapped.

So if you decide to have surgery abroad, just please really think about what support you have in place to permanently change your eating habits and life, put those changes into effect BEFORE your surgery, and then get whatever support you need after to keep them going. I think it will be difficult without a complete program, but yes, of course it’s your choice.

Lalliebelle · 08/06/2021 19:03

Ten days alone in a hotel, I'd bloody love it.

WilsonMilson · 08/06/2021 19:30

God no, that’s madness. Risk of covid in red list country, then risk from travel after surgery, then being in a hotel on your own for 10 days just after a major operation? Sounds like a nightmare.

It is elective surgery anyway, so it’s not like you are in pain or waiting for something vital, though I appreciate your weight may be making life difficult and uncomfortable.

I mean this in the kindest way, as I know it’s not easy, but wouldn’t it be a better idea to use this waiting time to get to grips with lifestyle, eating and exercise than risking going to a red list country now?

BoeJidensLeftShoe · 08/06/2021 19:33

Gee thanks Wilson! Lose weight without surgery! Wow. Why did I never think of that?! Of course this is my first port of call and not something that's taken years to get to. Total whim decision!

What a revelation. I'll just go lose 7 stone now because ive never considered it previously. Amazing :)

BoeJidensLeftShoe · 08/06/2021 19:42

Apologies. That was rude.

Am just so sick of people thinking this isn't something that's has been thought through seriously and the vest last resort in a long line of attempts at losing weight. It's just tiring having to explain yourself over and overid be sat here for an hour if I went through my history with weightloss with you, everything I'd tried and the amount of yoyoing I have done over fifteen years.

Fifteen years of hating your body. And people think its drastic to find a permanent solution that's NHS approved.

AlmostSummer21 · 08/06/2021 19:46

@BoeJidensLeftShoe. My you're a stroppy mare! You ask a question which didn't require you to mention your surgery, people have an opinion (which you asked for) which is formed by knowing about your surgery..yet you expect them not to mention it 🙄🤷🏻‍♀️

Without the surgery & on a normal diet, yes, I could do 10 days quarantine IF I could open my hotel room door when I needed to (knowing I could, would possibly mean I didn't need to) not having the freedom to do so I'd be having panic attacks.

Would I after surgery - nope. Not a chance.

WeeFae · 08/06/2021 19:48

I had surgery abroad in April, I quarantined at home for 10 days. It was fine, as I was recovering anyway!

WeeFae · 08/06/2021 19:51

Mine was also for bariatric surgery!

BoeJidensLeftShoe · 08/06/2021 19:51

@AlmostSummer21 yup. I am.
