I can’t bear the thought of another full lockdown but it seems inevitable

I’ve only just this week been allowed to see sister without social distancing, as she lives in residential care, had a lovely meal and a big hug but at the end all I could think was, will it be another year before we can meet again? She’s been hugely, horribly affected by this virus - she’s dreadfully ill through anxiety - and has been only just told this week she can see two relatives and one friend, and she might be allowed back to day care services the end of this month - first time since Feb 2020 .

I can’t bear the thought of another year indoors, no haircuts, no socialising, no shopping, no travel, no seeing sister or friends or family ...

I live in a tiny village with shit public transport that was largely stoped over both lockdowns ... can’t bear another year in this three mile square and relying on online delivery and zoom ... GP rang this morning and even yapping to her I thought, how lovely it would be to see someone else face to face - most friends and family are still heavily avoiding all socialising, this is my experience of most people now that there’s a lot of fear and anxiety around covid .

I realise restrictions are necessary and probably inevitable, and things could be so so much worse - but I’m struggling so much now . Finding I’m dreading getting out of bed as I keep thinking, what’s coming next?

I believe they are relevant and informed by data. Issue is people have different opinions on what is relevant and what is evidence

MaxNormal · 04/06/2021 23:44

The reality is that I don't think it's worth saving one elderly life if a child becomes malnourished as the consequence of the actions taken to save them.

Fortunately that is not the likely outcome from UK mitigation measures, as harmful as they are, but they are the reality of attempting months-long lockdowns and restrictions in countries where people have no financial resiliance whatseover and the government can't or won't provide basic support.

PaulGallico · 04/06/2021 23:44

@SonnetForSpring - very true but you have placed yourself as a very prominent voice on this thread and I am yet to see any data - just personal opinion and scaremongering.

PaulGallico · 04/06/2021 23:45

@SonnetForSpring and not an ounce of critical thinking

SonnetForSpring · 04/06/2021 23:46

Go and find the data. It's there. PHE published it yesterday

SonnetForSpring · 04/06/2021 23:47

All I keep hearing is where is the data. Check the SAGE minutes. Look at independent sage. Look at PHE. It's all there!

CloudPop · 04/06/2021 23:48

@MaxNormal

I grew up in Africa. My family are still there. Let me tell you covid is the least of their worries, and the sodding government Western copycat lockdowns have ruined people. The police and army killed a few people as well, to get the point across. There are now children starving. But covid, right?
Totally With you @MaxNormal 😢

I don't think there will be another lockdown. There will be another big spike in cases, maybe as big or bigger than the one in January. Deaths and hospitalisations won't go up so high as they did in January.

Yes the UK is in a reasonable position with vaccinations. However, while I don't think there should be another lockdown, I think we should be stepping up social distancing again to where it was in early May (e.g. no indoor gatherings, limits on outdoor gatherings). In another couple of months we will be in an even better position on vaccinations. What is the point of having a very large number of non-fatal cases and the associated long-term health complications (long covid) when in a couple of months with most of the population double-vaccinated that could probably be largely avoided?

PrincessNutNuts · 05/06/2021 00:01
@PrincessNutNuts why is it inevitable?

The previous dates you reel off - no one had been jabbed.

What part of that can you not understand? Fwiw I think June 21st is too early to open up but another lockdown at this stage is not inevitable.
I expect the Prime Minister to say that the vaccine rollout is going great guns, hospital admissions and deaths are low, so the 21st June will go ahead.

And then the new Delta variant that has managed to achieve dominance even while we have vaccines and have been in Lockdown restrictions will be free to really get going.

What is there to stop it? What's going to stop it in three weeks that isn't stopping it now?

About 45% of the U.K. population will be fully vaccinated by June 21st.

That's not enough.

SonnetForSpring · 05/06/2021 00:04

Do you really think he will go ahead with 21st? I don't think he will be able to. Scientists will revolt.

PrincessNutNuts · 05/06/2021 00:05
@Arrowheart - totally agree. Scaremongering shite looking at you - Nanny, Princess and Sonnett. Absolutely meet up on MN in a few weeks..because that is what balanced, informed, supportive debate is about.
What have I posted that is "scaremongering" please?

No, but we'll only find out on the evening of the 20th.

By which time it'll be too late for anything but another lockdown.

SonnetForSpring · 05/06/2021 00:12

In fact, I think the media is already building to delay 21st. I can't see there being any more freedom than we have now. They need to re- introduce some restrictions but I don't think that they will do that yet.

SonnetForSpring · 05/06/2021 00:12

Agree Nanny

When we came out of Lockdown on December 2nd we were at 100,000 new cases a week and 3000 deaths a week

But the government still opened up.

Then a month later, after inventing a whole new tier, we had to lockdown again on January 5th.

50,000 British people died of covid in January and February because of the head of steam they let the pandemic build up.

Bolton Hospital had 6 covid wards open in January. At the moment they've only got 3 open.

I think this time Boris Johnson will wait until they've got 7.

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe the government can learn.

SAGE are certainly as rattled as I have ever heard them.

If the "positive" "covid centrist" scientists on Twitter do a vanishing act or delete loads of old tweets then maybe the tide will be turning.

SonnetForSpring · 05/06/2021 00:22

I'm hoping people won't let it happen again. I am very concerned that the public have no appetite for restrictions so Boris may wait until the public calls for restrictions...which I agree could be longer than last time and at a higher level of deaths. I'm hoping scientists will step up their campaign. It seems many people still are not aware of the the data.

Gothichouse40 · 05/06/2021 00:26

Where I live vaccinations have been slow. My husband had to chase up his 2nd vaccination appt. I got a letter for my 2nd, even though he had his first vaccination before me. Im right on 11 weeks after the first, husband is 12 weeks after the first. I thought 2nd vaccinations for over 50s was meant to be a priority. I cannot bear the thought of another Lockdown. What the hell do they expect with folk flying all over the place, shut the f***g airports and stop footballers and their fans flying all over the place.

PrincessNutNuts · 05/06/2021 00:26

It would be peak Boris Johnson to tell businesses that the 21st will be going ahead on the 14th, only to retract it and reverse the irreversible on the 20th. Or perhaps the 22nd?

The data shows an absolutely tiny number of people with both vaccine doses in hospital.

Some kind of football thing starts next week and FIFA? UEFA? somebody like that is in talks with the government to relax restrictions so that foreign fans can come here to watch matches, and to make it easier for U.K. footie fans to nip to Europe and back to watch a game.

If June 21st it off the the government's friends in the media will start to earnestly explain why that may be unfortunately necessary on about June 12th I expect.

The Prime Minister will be described as wrestling with the horns of a dilemma and desperate to avoid a lockdown.

Maybe there'll even be a photo of Chris Whitty pointing his finger at him with a cross face on or something.

Then a few "Friends of the PM say he's having sleepless nights over it" kind of things.
